What do we believe:
- We are a Southern Baptist Church, and we affirm the BFM 2000.
Intentionally a broad document meant to provide unity and accountability
A copy of the BFM is available on our church website and in the church office.
BFM 2000 explains what we believe concerning God, Scripture, Man, Sin, Salvation, Grace, The Church, Stewardship, Missions, and other Baptist distinctives.
We’ve been going over the BFM 2000 on Sunday evenings and I’d be more than happy to talk with you about any of those items and I’d encourage you to go back over those worship services if you want to know more about our convictional beliefs as Southern Baptists
- Helpful reminder: In essentials, unity. In non-essentials, liberty. In all things, charity.
We don't have to agree over every specific thing there is in order to worship together. We are united in the Gospel and the truthfulness and sufficiency of Scripture. We give one another grace and liberty from that point forward! Essentials that we have to be unified upon: Authority, Inerrancy, Sufficiency of Scripture. God. Sinfulness of mankind. Salvation being by grace through faith in Christ and having nothing to do with us and our works. Have to be united in the essentials of the Gospel message. We can have some liberty over other issues like Eschatology. In all things at FBC Salem, though, we’re going to be charitable towards others.

Why is the Church Needed?

1. We Need God's People For:
a. Community - we are created to be with other people and to have a place to call home (1 Peter 2:10).
1 Peter 2:10 CSB
10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
b. Struggling - the church is a body. Whenever a body part hurts, the other parts are there to assist and offer support (1 Cor. 12:26).
1 Corinthians 12:26 CSB
26 So if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
c. Accountability - we need people to help keep us on the right track. Accountability is not easy, but when it is done Biblically, it is for our good (Romans 14:12).
Romans 14:12 CSB
12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.
2. We Need God's Principles
a. We need to be regularly taught and reminded of what God's Word says.
b. We need to stand for what we believe in (Hebrews 10:23).
Hebrews 10:23 CSB
23 Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, since he who promised is faithful.
3. We Need God's Purpose
a. Jesus built His Church for a reason:
i. To share His Gospel
ii. To be a light in the darkness
iii. To be people of hope
iv. To Glorify Himself
b. Nearly every New Testament book is written to a local church. The local church matters to God and has a special purpose!
c. As we gather, we remember why we do so – it's all because of Him.

What is Your Purpose as a Church Member?

1. Be Faithful in Attendance
a. There is no such thing as a lone-ranger Christian. Faithful Christians are a part of the local church (Hebrews 10:25).
Hebrews 10:25 CSB
25 not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.
2. Be Careful to Protect Unity
a. Jesus prayed that His followers would be one (John 17:20-21).
John 17:20–21 CSB
20 “I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in me through their word. 21 May they all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us, so that the world may believe you sent me.
b. Paul calls the church in Ephesus to stay unified (Ephesians 4:1-3).
Ephesians 4:1–3 CSB
1 Therefore I, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you to walk worthy of the calling you have received, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
c. Unity can be lost in an instant by turning preferences into principles.
d. Biblically Handle Conflicts and Situations (Matthew 18:15-17).
Matthew 18:15–17 CSB
15 “If your brother sins against you, go tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won your brother. 16 But if he won’t listen, take one or two others with you, so that by the testimony of two or three witnesses every fact may be established. 17 If he doesn’t pay attention to them, tell the church. If he doesn’t pay attention even to the church, let him be like a Gentile and a tax collector to you.
e. Satan cannot Defeat a Unified Body (Matthew 16:18).
Matthew 16:18 CSB
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
3. Be Prayerful for your Pastors, Leaders, and Fellow Church Members
a. Pastors are held accountable by God (1 Peter 5:1-3).
1 Peter 5:1–3 CSB
1 I exhort the elders among you as a fellow elder and witness to the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory about to be revealed: 2 Shepherd God’s flock among you, not overseeing out of compulsion but willingly, as God would have you; not out of greed for money but eagerly; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
b. God calls pastors to guide the church (Hebrews 13:17).
Hebrews 13:17 CSB
17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, since they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account, so that they can do this with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
c. Prayer by members is crucial to the health of the church and the work of leaders (1 John 1:9).
1 John 1:9 CSB
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
d. Why does this matter?
i. The United States needs workers in many fields, and, sadly, the church needs pastors! LifeWay research shares that for every 20 pastors who begin in ministry, only one will retire as a pastor. There is a 95% dropout rate, and your pastor and leaders desperately need your prayers!
4. Be Bountiful in Your Financial Support
a. Old Testament Principle of giving to the Church is a "Tithe" (10%) (Malachi 3:10).
Malachi 3:10 CSB
10 Bring the full tenth into the storehouse so that there may be food in my house. Test me in this way,” says the Lord of Armies. “See if I will not open the floodgates of heaven and pour out a blessing for you without measure.
Old Testament giving for many was more like 23.3% - so we can’t be completely legalistic about a flat 10% as God has given us 100% of what we have and expects us to use it to honor and serve Him. That might require us to give 20% to Him. For others it might look like 3-4% and you serving more with your time. Every person is different - God wants us to give cheerfully and to trust in Him along the way.
b. Giving is an Act of Worship and goes above and beyond a tithe (2 Corinthians 9:7-8).
2 Corinthians 9:7–8 CSB
7 Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work.
c. Giving Meets the Needs of the Church/Missions (Matthew 28:19-20).
Matthew 28:19–20 CSB
19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
As we give, we are able to meet the needs of our church and fulfill the Great Commission by funding missionaries as they share the Gospel and helping those who are in need around the globe. Principles for giving that have impacted my life: Your first 10% goes to your church. Your next ____% goes to whatever need God is putting on your heart. Not saying that’s a Biblical command, I’m saying that’s been something that I’ve seen lived out for years and years and I can’t tell you how many times God has honored that obedience. Ie. With the Ukraine situation or with the Lottie Moon Christmas offering, we give to our church first and then we go above that giving in order to help with those other offerings. Why? Because we’re members of FBC Salem. This is our home. This is our family and body! We all have a role to play to support the body and giving is one of those roles as it is an act of worship as we trust in our God to use what we give to help our church minister to this community and reach the world with the Gospel.
This is the perfect occasion to talk about giving as this is a class with either members of FBC Salem or prospective members of FBC Salem. This is a privilege that we “get” to do… Not something that we feel that we “have” to do. Further, if you’re not a member, we don’t expect you to give and frankly, we don’t want you to. That’s something that members get to do as members of this local body.
5. Be Mindful About Your Own Preferences
a. Know the difference between a preference and a principle.
b. Preferences can cause division in the body.
i. God has wired us a certain way – preferences, by definition aren't bad! But if we're not careful, we can use them in a divisive way.
6. Be Thoughtful in Encouraging Others
a. Every Christian needs to give and receive (Phil. 2:3, Col. 3:16).
Philippians 2:3 CSB
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourselves.
Colossians 3:16 CSB
16 Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
b. Be Intentional in Encouragement to Others (Hebrews 10:24).
Hebrews 10:24 CSB
24 And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works,

What is the difference between a Church Attender and Church Member?

We see a Biblical case for Church Membership in places like Acts 2, Acts 6, Romans 16, 1 Timothy 5, 1 Corinthians 12, and Romans 12. We see these commands and cases throughout the New Testament and it’s important to note these places because there is a temptation for us to think that membership isn’t a big deal… That it’s all about attending and that we can do everything necessary on an attending basis and that we don’t need to join. By no means does this mean that you should immediately jump into joining a church without prayer and careful consideration - but there should be a part of us as Christians that crave belonging to a local body of believers and serving in that body. This is the picture painted to us from Paul, Peter, and others in the New Testament.
1. Spiritual Growth
a. You grow along with the body instead of apart from it. You are aware of what is taking place at the church and actively involved in the discipleship process. This is a part of New Testament discipleship.
2. Spiritual Accountability
a. You have others who are going through similar situations and can encourage others and be encouraged. You have people who depend on your presence and who notice when you are not present.
You also submit yourself to Church discipline as Matthew 18 talks about. This is a restorative process, not a vengeful one. This is an important part of Spiritual accountability!
3. Spiritual Belonging
a. You have a family that is there for you in the good seasons and the tough ones. You belong to a body that supports you and needs you to support it. You have a place to call home.
4. Spiritual Service
a. You have a responsibility as a member to serve, whereas you don't have that obligation as an attender. As an attender you consume; as a member, you produce as you serve in the body. You have a place to plug in and serve along with your brothers and sisters.
5. 5 "S's" of Church Membership
1) Salvation 2) Statement (beliefs) 3) Structure 4) Strategy 5) Stewardship
1. Salvation: The church is composed of those who have been born again and followed through with believers baptism. The BFM shares, "A New Testament church of the Lord Jesus Christ is an autonomous local congregation of baptized believers, associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the gospel; observing the two ordinances of Christ, governed by His laws, exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in them by His Word, and seeking to extend the gospel to the ends of the earth.
2. Statement: We exist to
a. Glorify God (1 Corinthians 10:31)
b. Proclaim Gospel (Acts 1:8)
c. Make Disciples (Matthew 28:18-20)
d. Obey His Word (John 14:15)
e. Maintain Fellowship with Believers (1 John 1:7)
f. Love God and Love Others (Matthew 22:37-39)
i. We hold to the BFM 2000 as our Article of Faith
3. Structure: We operate under the Lordship of Jesus Christ and each member of the congregation plays a part in the democratic processes of this church. As the BFM shares, "The officers in the local church are pastors and deacons." The pastors lead this church and committee members play a role in the leadership process as they serve in their respective capacities. We are blessed to have tremendous lay leadership that serves in a variety of capacities (committees, deacons, and teachers). This is crucial in the structure of the church as one person or even a small group of people cannot do everything!
a. We are an autonomous local church. In Southern Baptist life we operate under the leadership of our local congregation, we don't take commands from another location (Catholics – Rome) that tell us what we have to do.
Helpful overview of FBC Salem structure
1. Pastor Led
2. Staff Run
3. Deacon Served
4. Committee Reviewed
5. Congregation Approved
4. Strategy:
a. We strive to
i. Exalt the Savior
ii. Equip the Saint
iii. Encourage the Sheep
iv. Evangelize the Sinner
b. We want to be a multi-generational, Kingdom focused body of believers who focus on fulfilling the Great Commission and Great Commandment while bringing glory to our God in all things.
c. We want to follow Jesus and be the salt and light that He commands us to be. This requires us to properly teach the Word, lift one another up in prayer, gather together to faithfully worship, witness for Christ and love others.
i. The only way that we can fulfill our purpose is to keep the Gospel at the heart of everything that we do
5. Stewardship: While the church is not a secular business, the church is responsible to be wise stewards of the resources God gives to us. Part of the responsibility of the church body is to give sacrificially in order for the church to fulfill our purpose as we minister to other members and our community. This requires all members to play a part in this process as we are a team in this capacity.
Questions to Consider:
1. What kind of church would FBC Salem be if every member was just like me?
2. What would happen if every member prayed for FBC Salem like I pray for FBC Salem?
3. What would happen if every member of FBC Salem was as involved as I am?
4. If every member of FBC Salem gave the same proportion that I give financially, would FBC Salem be able to keep its doors open?
Don't ask what the church can do for you but what you can do for the church!

Expectations of Members of First Baptist Salem:

1. Worship - as members of FBC Salem, we commit to making corporate worship a priority for our family. While sickness and events arise throughout the year, we commit to worship our Lord and Savior and bring Him glory with our brothers and sisters at FBC Salem (Hebrews 10:24-25, Romans 12:1-2).
2. Discipleship – as members of FBC Salem, we commit to belonging to a Sunday school class and growing spiritually alongside our brothers and sisters in Christ. Community and accountability are vital in the Christian life, and we commit to attend discipleship times regularly (Ephesians 4:1-6, 2 Timothy 3:16-17).
3. Service - as members of FBC Salem, we commit to serve in the local church and use our gifts and talents for the glory of God. We support FBC’s mission of glorifying God, making disciples, and sharing the Gospel in accordance with the Great Commission. We support serving in our community and to the ends of the earth (Ephesians 2:10, Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 10:45, Revelation 7:9, Acts 1:8).
4. Giving - as members of FBC Salem, we commit to give our time, talents, and resources to the Kingdom efforts of this church. The Old Testament practice of “tithing” is an excellent place to start - but we acknowledge that God is the giver of everything we have, and we are called to joyfully and carefully steward what He has given to us. Giving is an act of worship and part of discipleship (Proverbs 3:9, Psalm 24:1, Matthew 6:1-4 and 19-24).
5. Unity - as members of FBC Salem, we commit to worship our Lord in unity with our brothers and sisters in Christ. While the Kingdom of God is diverse, the Holy Spirit unites us with one another, and we acknowledge that the needs of others must be put above the needs of ourselves (Ephesians 4:1-6, 1 Corinthians 1:10, 1 Peter 3:8-9).
6. Prayer - as members of FBC Salem, we commit to regularly pray for this church's leadership. We commit to regularly pray for the members of this church. Finally, we commit to pray for the Gospel to be advanced and that lost souls might be saved through the ministry efforts of FBC Salem (Hebrews 4:16, 13:17-18, Colossians 4:2-6).
7. Evangelism - as members of FBC Salem, we commit to share the truth of the Gospel with those around us both inside and outside the walls of this building (Isaiah 52:7, Romans 10:14-15).
8. Bible study – as members of FBC Salem, we commit to regularly read Scripture outside of church in order to grow in our understanding of God's Word. We acknowledge that the more we apply Scripture to our lives, the more we look like Jesus Christ (Psalm 119:18, Hebrews 4:12-13).

How Do We Do Ministry:

- Ministry at First Baptist Salem is more than just Sunday/Wednesday.
- We have specific ministry activities for all ages.
You can find more information about these specific ministries at our welcome center and at the HUB (next to the organ entrance to the sanctuary)
You can also find more information about these ministries on our church Facebook page - if you have Facebook, this would be an extremely helpful page to “like” as you’ll be notified of upcoming events, camps, mission emphases, and service updates!
- We have lots of service opportunities throughout the year.
- My (Joel) ministry philosophy: Exalt the Savior, Equip the Saint, Encourage the Sheep, Evangelize the Sinner.
o This starts with my relationship with God > Churchgoers > community/beyond.
o Has to start vertical before stretching to the horizontal.
- We want to preach and teach the Word during corporate worship to give you tools to grow with your family in your home (Monday-Saturday matter!).
- We want to have community interaction at our church through outreach events and regular invitations by churchgoers.
- We see ourselves as a body that serves as the church away from the church building in addition to gathering in the church building to worship our God.
- We view the gathering of the saints as something to be taken seriously, and we want everyone to feel welcome as they come to worship with us.
- We want to fulfill the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) and the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:36-40) and keep those two things in mind with everything that we do.
We are passionate about missions and as Acts 1:8 shares, that starts here in Salem! We have a mission board across from the HUB (next to the choir room stairs) that highlights our mission partnerships and things like that. This summer we are taking 13 people to Guatemala and we hope to establish a relationship with some Baptist missionaries stationed there in order to send more teams and people in the future. We have had a long-standing partnership with a church in Moldova that we were unable to travel to this year due to the uncertain situation in that region of the world. We are also working on a stateside partner church. Part of the way that we fulfill the Great Commission is by giving funds to offerings such as the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering (North America) and the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering (International) for missions efforts all around the world. Further, part of your tithes and offerings goes to help these missionaries throughout the year.
We also want to fulfill the Great Commandment and do all things for the glory of God and the good of others! We want to love God and love others here at FBC Salem and this is why we strive to have regular outreach events and programs that help people who might not be a part of a local church feel welcomed to our church.
- Financial information is open to all members.
See attached financial statement from March. Walk people through the way it is set up. We have a yearly budget that we vote on at the end of the calendar year and various committees have that alloted amount to use for their various ministry needs. We distribute this sheet before every business meeting and you can find weekly attendance and giving summaries on the HUB wall as you walk into the sanctuary. We want all members to be aware of where things stand financially and strive for transparency. We hope that all members care about finances and where things stand and aim to give and support the ministry of FBC Salem. As we give, our prayer is that God would not only provide but bless what is given to accomplish His plan for His glory.
- We want to encourage every member to serve in the church.
- We want to see the Holy Spirit change lives for all eternity through the ministries that take place at First Baptist Salem..
- We want to take the Gospel to our homes, community, state, and nations
Church membership is nothing like a country club, where you pay your dues and receive a service. Church membership is a commitment to be part of God’s community through the body of Christ. There are no lone-ranger Christians – you need the body, and the body needs you. One of the expectations of members of the body is that you encourage the other parts of the body. That you serve within the body. That you support the body. We're better together than we could ever be apart. This is a Christlike community where we come together to worship our King, proclaim His Gospel in our community and the nations, and grow with one another.

Baseball diagram (slide) - we all have room to grow as there is another base to reach. Once you become a Christian, you’re supposed to grow and disciple and mature in your walk (Milk to meat). After that point you’re supposed to serve in the church and help others. Take what you’ve learned from others and from the Lord and help others as they seek to grow in their walk! Finally, you become a disciple-making-disciple who aims to not only make converts but disciples. This is the Great Commission lived out in the local church!

We are SO excited to see what the Lord has in store in the days, weeks, months, and years to come here at First Baptist Church Salem! Our desire is to see the name of Christ lifted high, the lost come to know Christ as Lord, and the saved grow in their spiritual walk. In order to fulfill our God-given mission, we need everyone to come together and play our part in this church. God has gifted each one of us uniquely and He calls us to use our gift and serve in His church. We are so glad that you have chosen to join our church (or at least are considering doing so) and we believe that God has sent you here for a purpose.
Prayerfully consider how the Lord has gifted and called you and find a way to plug in here at First Baptist. I would love to meet with you and explore where that place of service might be! Our prayer is that each member of FBC would continue to grow in their spiritual walk with the Lord in the days ahead. Discipleship and Sanctification are not immediate actions, they require time and devotion. As a result, we are committed to making disciple-making-disciples and pray that you join us in that endeavor… not because it is easy, but because Jesus demands it.
