Paul’s Greeting

Who is the letter written to? and why to the church?
the same greeting that is in all of his letters
but why does Paul begin with grace and peace
is this just something they said back then?
Read Philemon 1-3.
Pray

The structure

first 3 verses
Paul a prisoner
Christ Jesus
Paul followed by 4 names
Grace to you
Lord Jesus Christ
Last 3 verses do the same
From Paul and Timothy
to Philemon
Apphia the wife?
Archippus the son?
to the church that meets at Philemon’s home
The Greeting: if that much thought was put into the ending and beginning of the letter
should we therefore look closely at all of the wording in the middle
Grace and peace from God and our Lord Jesus Christ

Jesus our Lord

Christ Jesus, Lord Jesus Christ
Philemon is Lord over all that he owns
And he has purchased slaves from the slave market
and what Philemon wants, the slaves do
he takes care of them feeds them provide all of their needs
Philemon needs to remember that he also has a Lord over him
One who bought him with the price of His blood
the one who gives him life everlasting
full of Grace and peace
Jesus is the Good Shepherd
and Jesus did not buy Philemon because of wealth or potential
But because of Christ’s great love for him
And as Lord, Jesus has work for us to do
People we need to forgive
people that we need to disciple
to use our Holy Spirit given gifts, and talents

Grace

Romans 11:5–6 (LEB)
So in this way also at the present time, there is a remnant selected by grace. But if by grace, it is no longer by works, for otherwise grace would no longer be grace.
Grace is something good, but undeserved, given to us by God
when we think of grace we think of saving grace
God giving us salvation that we don’t deserve
Grace is the foundation of our salvation
Grace is love in action/ or love being demonstrated
Ephesians 1.
1 Corinthians 15.
2 Corinthians 8
2 Corinthians 12.
Phil 2 12.
Acts 6 8.
2 Peter 3 18.
Grace is the essence of Christianity
Grace is God doing for us what we are totally incapable of doing for our selves
Chairo- Grace - Charity . beggars need charity
before God we are beggars for everything Godly
God taking us to the wood shed is also Grace
Revelation 3:19 LEB
As many as I love, I reprove and discipline. Be zealous, therefore, and repent!
Peters rooster was Grace teaching him that he was not as strong as he thinks
so how do we receive Grace By Faith
Ephesians 2:8 LEB
For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God;
through faith we receive the grace of salvation
Colossians 2:6 LEB
Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, live in him,
we walk/ live our Christian lives by grace through Faith
James 4:6 LEB
But he gives greater grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”
we need to come with empty hands
having given up doing it on our own
Story of the young Scottish minister who walked proudly into the pulpit to preach his first sermon. He had a brilliant mind and a good education and was confident of himself as he faced his first congregation. But the longer he preached, the more conscious everyone was that “the Lord was not in the wind.” He finished his message quickly and came down from the pulpit with his head bowed, his pride now gone. Afterward, one of the members said to him,
If you had gone into the pulpit the way you came down, you might have come down from the pulpit the way you went up.
The humble man realizes that all that he has comes from God and must be given back to God. But when we think we're humble--we're not!
The “gravity of grace” works like the earth’s water system, which always flows from the highest to the lowest point. Just as the waters of Niagara roll over the fall and plunge down to make a river below, and just as that river flows ever downward to still more low-lying areas where it brings life and growth, so too it is with God’s river of grace. Grace’s gravity carries it to the lowly in heart, where it brings life and blessing. Grace goes to the humble.
Paul wants Philemon and the rest to have Grace
because Grace is the only thing that can make us effective
Peter wants us to grow in Grace
are we allowing Grace to flow to us?
are we receiving it by faith?
Philemon 1–3 (LEB)
Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, to Philemon, our dear friend and fellow worker, and to Apphia our sister, and to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Peace flows from God when we are trusting in Him
Peace flows from the Grace of God
Paul’s greeting has a boat load of theology,
and practical christian living
if its used, recieved, acquired
By Faith
