Mark 5:21-6:44

Introduction:

Ø      Jesus has begun his ministry and currently in Mark’s Gospel He has been ministering in the region of Galilee

Ø      He has been teaching and performing miracles in this region proclaiming the coming of the Kingdom

·         Teaching:  with authority—relatively young—irresistible force of a divine message—God given quality

·         Miracles:  the miracles were done so as to authorize the person and mission of Jesus

Proposition: We must all allow the glory of Jesus Christ to shine in our hearts and then to put that glory on display for the whole world to see.

Ø      Now that we are brought back up to speed in Mark’s Gospel let’s plunge back into Jesus’ public ministry

Prayer

1)    The Display of His Power                     v21-43

A-    His Power over Death (Healing of Jairus’ daughter)                                            v21-24; 35-43

Ø      The transition from the preceding section (verses 1–20) to this one (verses 21–43) is unforgettable.[1]

Ø      From the request of “Please go away,” the story advances to the petition “Please come” (contrast v17 & v23).[2]

1-    Jairus

b-      As one of the synagogue rulers, he was an important and respected person

c-      He admitted that his daughter had reached the final stage of death, but believed that a touch from Jesus would heal her.[3]

Ø      So on to the house of Jairus Jesus went, only to be “interrupted” by yet another person in need

Ø      The fact that none of these intrusions stun him, so that for the moment he would be at a loss at what to do or what to say, shows that we are dealing here with the Son of man who is also the Son of God![4]

B- His Power over Sickness (Healing of the Woman with the issue of blood)          v25-34

1-    the Scripture records that this woman had severe menstrual hemorrhaging for 12 years          v25-26

2-    she knew that if she could touch Jesus she would be healed    v28

3-    this woman would have been cut off from fellowship with God’s people for 12 years or at least the better part of 12 years because menstruation made a woman unclean (Leviticus 15:19)

4-    if she touched Jesus it would have made him ceremonially unclean and others she touched on her way

Ø      She makes it to Jesus and touches his robe and being God He knew that power had gone out of him  v30

Ø      Read v30-34

1-      What kind of faith did she have? It was weak and timid.[5] – and that is where we find a good lesson for ourselves

Application:

1-      From man’s perspective - Not everybody has the same degree of faith, but Jesus responds to faith no matter how feeble it might be. When we believe, He shares His power with us and something happens in our lives. [6]

2-      From God’s perspective – we have yet another display of the reason for our faith to be placed in His Son

Back to Jairus…

Ø      As frustrating as the wait must have been for Jairus, think about how encouraging this would have been to Him to!

Ø      While finishing dealing with this woman word came that Jairus’ daughter had died - v35

Ø      The reader is left wondering what will Jairus do.

Ø      Jairus could already believe the difficult; could he now believe the impossible? That is what Jesus asked him to do[7]

·         read v36

·         Jesus overheard the message but refused to accept its implications.[8]

·         Jesus called Jairus to stop fearing and keep believing – to drive out his fear with faith

·         He had already exercised faith in coming to Jesus; he had seen the relationship between faith and Jesus’ power; now he was exhorted to believe that Jesus could restore his lifeless daughter.[9]

Ø    Jesus speaks to the girl in His and Her native tongue of Aramaic – this is no magical formula for healing

Ø    Read v42 – the onlookers (parents and Peter, James and John) were out of their mind with amazement

Ø    Jesus did the impossible and showed to them and to us that He truly is the Son of God

Transition: if ch5 could be called the faith chapter in its own right, then ch6 must be called the no faith chapter

6:1-6                Nazareth lacks faith in Jesus               v6

6:7-13              People who reject the message of the disciples         v11

6:14-29            Herod rejects John’s message             v20

Ø      Unfortunately, like today, there are many who chose to not accept Jesus as the Lord and Savior of their life

Ø      These three sections show us that signs and miracles never product faith – it’s a personal commitment choice

Transition: the last section in our text this morning is another miracle found in 6:30

2) The Display of His Love                  6:30-44

A-    In this account Jesus demonstrates the power of the Creator God, still in control of the universe that he had created.[10]

B-    Jesus is again followed by an enthusiastic crowd – he had compassion on them

1-    his compassion stemmed from their condition – stubbed toe vs. life ending illness

2-    the compassion is for more than just their physical need – he first fed them with His teaching  v34

a-              No animal is as dependent as is a sheep. Without someone to guide it, it wanders, is lost, and becomes food for wolves.  Without someone to graze it, it starves. Jesus knows that the people are like that: their leaders fail to give them reliable guidance. They do not supply their souls with nourishing food. The minds of the would-be guides are too occupied with legalistic niceties.  So Jesus began to teach them many things. [11]

3-    after their real need was addressed then he met their secondary need – food

C-    Going against the desire of the disciples to send the people away, Jesus once again put His glory on display for all to see    v41-44

1-    He feeds 5,000 men plus women and children with only 5 loaves of bread and two fish

2-    The provision was miraculous and abundant. Mark emphasized that all ate and were fully satisfied.[12] – confirmed by the leftovers that were taken up

Conclusion:

1-      The first phenomenon that should grip us from this text is the Glory of God in Jesus Christ

A-    this world was made to display the Glory God – Ps 19:1 “heavens declare the glory of God”

B-    generally this glory is seen in creation and specifically in the person and work of Jesus Christ

C-    His mission while on earth was wrapped up in Hebrews 1:3 – to display the radiance of the Glory of God

·         all the miracles, the teaching, the actions, the love and compassion were meant to show us the magnificent splendor of the God that created us

·         Salvation:  Christ healed this woman and raised this girl from the dead to show you here today that He alone is from God and He alone can provide you salvation, but only by faith in Him as you repent from sin and turn to Him as your Lord and Savior

·         Sanctification:  We were created to display this glory.  Our lives our to be displaying to those around us the same glory of God that was revealed in this healing and this resurrection found in Mark’s Gospel

D-    we were made to see the glory of God, take pleasure in it and then show it to others – love, peace, compassion

2-    The second wonder we see from the account of the Jairus and this woman is there faith

A-    Throughout the history of redemption it has always been that when it seemed that all was lost, believers placed their trust in God and were delivered - When the need was highest help was closest.[13]

B-    We have seen recently seen God’s display of love and provision in the life of this church

- Don:  job in 1 week               - Rob:  Car sold in one day                 - RJ:  free dresser for JT                      - Autumn’s surgery and recovery in 4 days                            - Dallas:  sold house in 1 day

Ø      Christ calls to us the way that he called to Jairus – stop fearing and keep on believing – believe the impossible

Ø      Mark showed us that a true Christian is one who lives in the light of God’s glory and by faith in Jesus Christ

Ø      Whatever it is that you are fearful of today stop and allow the glory of Jesus Christ to shine in your heart and then put that glory on display for the entire world.
