Passages to ponder

Scripture should be read, studied and there are lots of scripture that we should put to memory.

Have written on our hearts and that is what this series has been about thus far, and will be until we finish it.

If we summarize where we have been it helps set us up for where we are going today.

Character and supreme blessedness of kingdom dwellers (Mt5:3-12)

The character and the blessedness of those who would be, who are kingdom dwellers by faith, those who inherit the kingdom of God.

The source of defilement (Mk7:21-23)

The source of defilement is from within, from the heart, and we looked at the heart of the matter, we need to be careful what we allow into our hearts.

Possessing the qualities of love (1Cor13:1-13)

The kind of love that is needed in the lives of the followers of Jesus, of kingdom dwellers.

Watch out for works of the flesh (Gal5:19-21)

The works of the flesh are dangerous, they can keep you out, or take you out of the kingdom of heaven.

The Spirits fruit in you (Gal5:22-23)

The Spirits fruit is the Spirits proof in the kingdom dweller.

It is the Spirits power that helps us to walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh.

Protect the unity of the Spirit (Eph4:4-6)

We must be diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit which is the church and looked at the unity of the “one’s” in this passage

(Transition) this leads us to the great put on, the great put on of the apparel of Christ in our passage today.

But before we get to the passage we need to, as we did in the other parts of this series, look at the context, then look at the text and the meaning of it, and of course then the application, the “so what, or so that.”

So, now let’s get started.

Please open your bibles to Col3 for that is where we will be spending time today.

The context

I think it has been said a time or two, especially in this series, context matters.

For us to grasp, comprehend the passage we need to understand the context in which the passage is used.

So, may we look at the context which describes the passage regarding the great put on.

Christians have been raised with Christ (Col3:1, 2:12-13)

Notice the wording in Col3:1 “1 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.”

According to Robertson’s word pictures on this verse the “if” is condition of the first class, meaning “since you have been raised up,” an assumption that you have already.

You were raised up when you were baptized, look at Col2:12-13 “12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.

13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,”

(Transition) - since being raised up with Christ and placed in Christ through baptism for forgiveness of sins, it opens the door for walking in the newness of life (Eph4:3) and new opportunities.

Christians are to seek the things above (Col3:1-4; Rom6:3-4)

The place where Christ is sitting; we are to set our mind on the things above and not on the earthly things; here look at this section in context

Col3:1-3 “1 Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.

3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”

You can see in inference to baptism again, but let me add Rom6:3-4 “3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.”

Our life is in Christ and we walk in the newness of life in Christ and one day it will be evident to all

COl3:3-4 “3 For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.”

Our resurrection, new walk in Christ should be evident in a new mindset!

A, new direction

Christians at to put off the old man (Col3:5-9)

So, look with me at some of the things we are to put off.

COl3:5-6 “5 Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.

6 For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience,”

God’s wrath will come upon!

Now, there is the rest of the section and must bring that in too.

Col3:7-9 “7 and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them.

8 But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.

9 Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices,”

Christians are to put on the new man (Col3:10-11)

We should be reminded that we were created in the image of God, and when we put the old man to death we are the new man, no longer divided by race, class, or genealogy, but to be like Christ.

COl3:10-11 “10 and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him— 11 a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all.”

(Transition) Now we have the pretext, or the context of our focal passage today, setting us up for “the great put on.”

(transition) As God’s elect, as God’s beloved, as God’s children He provides Godly apparel for us to put on.

We now can looking at the meaning of the apparel items.

The meaning

God provides everything we need for life and godliness (see 2Pt1:3).

This includes godly apparel.

There are some great things to know about the apparel God provides.

That is what we are looking at now.

God provides what is needed, God provides what is necessary and God even gives the meaning of the necessary items.

Tender mercies (bowels of mercy KJV) - splagchnon - oiktirmos

This is plangk-non and oyk-tir-mos

From the bowels in the Hebrew means from the seat of tender affection, especially kindness, benevolence and compassion.

It also incorporates pity and mercy, or in one of the paraphrase versions it says “a heart of compassion.”

Kindness - chresotes

K-ray-stot-ace

This means gentleness, kindness

Humility - tapeinophrosune

tap-i-nof-ros-o-nay

Having a humble view of self, a deep sense of one’s moral littleness; it means modesty, humility, lowliness of mind.

Meekness - praotes

prah-ot-ace

Gentleness, mildness, meekness

Longsuffering - makrothumia

mak-roth-oo-mee-ah

Patience, forbearance, longsuffering, slowness in avenging wrongs

Bearing with one another - anechomai

an-ek-om-ahee

To sustain, to bear, to endure

Forgiving one another - charizomai

kharid-zom-ahee

To do something pleasant or agreeable (to one),to do a favor to, gratify; to grant forgiveness, to pardon.

We must forgive as the Lord forgave us (STOP; SLOW DOWN: EXPAND ON THIS: FORGIVENESS)

Love, the bond of perfection - agape

A - gape-pay

Active good will, benevolence, charity

“which binds them all together in perfect unity (NIV)

(Transition) What great apparel we as Christians can put on.

Now, for us to get full use, full enjoyment of the apparel there are some necessary accessories, but hey, they too are provided, your part, apply them.

Necessary Accessories (also provided)

Peace of God (Col3:15; Eph2:13-17)

We are to let the peace of God rule our hearts; consider Col3:15 “15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.”

We are one body, once alienated, far off, but have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

For Christ is our peace (Eph2:14) and brought peace (Eph2:17)

The Word of Christ (Col3:16)

There is a necessary accessory to the apparel of the word.

Consider Col3:16 “16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
