Intro:
This is a passage of Scripture that we look at with the Deacons this year to clarify what God is expecting of them as men in leadership
Men, those of you that decided this year was not the right season to serve as a deacon, what are you doing to prepare for next year?
We will be having a Deacon orientation meeting in Jan that your wives can come to and there will be childcare available.
These are going to be broad strokes today. Think of it more as your 20 point inspection on your truck and not the instructions of boring out your cylinders. The measurements here are more by the feet and not by 1 thousands of an inch. Think of it more as a mosiac (where the pieces make up the whole) or Kaleidescope (the pieces make up a pattern that is reflected and enjoyable to look at) remember the toys.
It is more descriptive than prescripted.
This is considered a wisdom Psalm and is an acrostic using successive letters from the Hebrew alphabet
It is the 2nd Psalm in a group in Book 5 known as the “Hal lu yah psalms (111-118)
Outline:
Content: “Blessed is the Man” (vs. 1-4)
Steady Heart: “It is Well with the Man” (vs. 5-9)
Unfulfilled: “The Wicked Man” (v. 10)
Summary: God’s desire for men is to fear the LORD and greatly delight in His commandments
You might say, Pastor jeremy, I know that. Today I want us to look at why this is important.
Prayer:

Content: “Blessed is the Man” (vs. 1-4)

Worship (v. 1)
Praise the LORD! (halelu-yah- Hallelujah!)- are you singing? notice it does not say “Praise the LORD only if you can hold a note, have been classically trained, and have a major deal with a recording label.
Blessed (happy, content) is the man who fears the LORD- “the man” is singular pointing out the significance for all of us as individuals to fear the LORD and not just be counted as one among many that gather that fear the LORD.
who greatly delights in his commandments!- You value/respect His words more than anyone elses
“The happy person, then, does not just know what the Lord says or even obey what the Lord requires, but he delights in what the Lord demands because of his enthusiastic devotion to his word (cf. Pss 1:2; 111:2).”
Daniel J. Estes, Psalms 73–150, ed. E. Ray. Clendenen, vol. 13, New American Commentary (Nashville, TN: B&H Publishing Group, 2019), 354.
GOD DESIRES MEN TO WORSHIP HIM WITH ENTHUSIASTIC DEVOTION!
you might ask, why is it important that I love Jesus and sing His praises...
Kids (v. 2)
His offspring will be mighty in the Land;
The generation of the upright will be blessed (favoured)- What we enthusiastically worship men, will have an affect on our kids.
GOD DESIRES YOUR KIDS TO BE BLESSED AS YOU FOLLOW THE LORD
Wealth (v. 3)
Wealth and riches are in his house,- “In his house”. we might be tempted to believe that our wealth and riches are contained in our bank accounts, investments, portfolios, etc. Is the wealth and riches of your house evaluated by the contents you bring into your home or the people that you send out from your home? I don’t think this is only a reference to the fact that there were not banks during this time and so anything of value was in the house.
Wealth-property
Riches- material possessions and resources
and his righteousness endures forever- there is something that endures more than wealth and riches. There are only 2 things that are eternal men, the Word of God and the souls of men and women.
“By contrast, too often humans seek to accumulate wealth by their own efforts and by their own ethical standards, rather than seeking the Lord and letting him bless them as he will. Wealth, then, should not be one’s goal in life, but it may be one of God’s blessings for those who seek him faithfully.”
Passing on a trust fund is nothing compared to passing on trust in the saviour.
GOD DESIRES MEN TO PASS ON A WEALTH OF RIGHTOUSNESS THAT WILL ENDURE THAT OF MATERIAL WEALTH.
Daniel J. Estes, Psalms 73–150, ed. E. Ray. Clendenen, vol. 13, New American Commentary (Nashville, TN: B&H Publishing Group, 2019), 355.
Light (v. 4)
Light dawns in the darkness for the upright; the content man is promised a light in the darkness.
he is graciouse, merciful (compassionate), and righteous- this world is filled with darkness, God’s desire for you men that you be a light. We as men can be gracious, compassionate and righteous in the face of dark circumstances. That doesn’t me we are silly or never address serious things. But, we do it with grace, compassion, and uprightness.
Application/Implications:
What are you singing the praises of these day men? It is not that we don’t sing praises, we all do, for me I can find myself enthusiastically singing the praises of the new Ford Bronco with the sasquatch package, Jeep rubicon 392. I will sing of its woth, it’s cabability, of how I think I would delight to have one to my wife, kids, or anyone that will listen. When was the last time you enthusiastically sung the praises of something to your wife trying to convince her it would be a good idea? vacations, smokers, BBQ, tools, toys, and trinkets
Do you desire to have kids? is your desire to bless them with more than just material prosperity?
How do people respond when you come in the room? Are you a light in a dark place? are you gracious and compassionate to those around you? Is it your heart to stand for righteousness before others and point them to a rightouseness that is found in Jesus?
Would you consider youself a content man? Why or why not? Are you content before God, with your kids, your posessions, and circumstances. Doesn’t everyone want to be in a better place than they are? Is it wrong to have ambition to continue to progress?
Transitional phrase:

Steady Heart: “It is Well with the Man” (vs. 5-9)

Generous (v. 5)
It is well with the man who deals generously and lends;
who conducts his affairs with justice
Legacy (v. 6)
For the righteous will never be moved;
he will be remembered forever
Heart (vs. 7-8)
He is not afraid of bad news;
his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD- It is not that there is not anything to be afraid of, he is not saying that there will be no bad news, he is saying that when, not if, but when these things come his heart is firm.
His heart is steady; he will not be afraid- He is sustained through the fear
until he looks in triumph on his adversaries- are these physical adversaries, are they spiritual adversaries? Well, which one are you facing today?
Summary (v. 9)
He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor;
his righteounsess endures forever;
his horn is exalted in honour- “horn” is a metaphor for power
Application/Implications:
Transitional phrase: Being content and steady are two positive characteristics of a man that fears the Lord and is trusing in Him. But not every man is here. This last verse points out what it is like when a man’s desires do not match God’s desires.

Unfulilled: “The Wicked Man” (v. 10)

p1 (v. 10)
The wicked man sees it and is angry; sees righteous living- by his judgment of righteousness, it should not end that way.
he gnashes his teeth and melts away;- grating one’s teeth together as an expression of anger. He is in despair, becomes weak or feeble, fading- used in Ps. 58:8 to describe a snail that disolves into slime
the desire of the wicked will perish!- get lost, go astray. They cease to exist.
Application/Implications:
Maybe you are feeling more like you are in this camp today. You are not happy and your heart is not steady. You are given to anger, and you feel that what you are giving yourself to is melting away and perishing! Can I encourage you? Read Psalm 111. That will give you the theology whereas this Psalm gives us thranthropolgy or a response to good theology.
In other words, you cannot be a Psalm 112 man without the Psalm 111 God.
How do you know if you are content or not? Well, I have been working through this in my own life and realized a couple weeks ago that I was struggling with contentment. How did I know? I was watching too much media, I was serching for things on-line way more than normal, my eating habits were changing (eating more chocolate, sweets, etc).
Summary: God’s desire for men is to fear the LORD and greatly delight in His commandments
Song: My Redeemer lives
