Intro: Welcome my Friends
BIBLE TEXT: Matthew 6:19-21 ““Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;
but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Sermon Title: You can’t take any of it with you
Joke: Some thieves one day broke into a store but didn’t steal anything. They just exchanged the tags. They took a $6,000 tag off of a diamond ring and put it on an imitation diamond. They took the imitation diamond tag of $99.95 and put it on the $6,000 ring. They took an imitation print painting and reversed its tag with that of an expensive original. People came in and bought stuff up. They spent a lot of money on the worthless and a little bit of money on the expensive.
We live in a culture today that has switched the tags. We put a lot of money on the flashy and put thirty-nine cents on character. We put a lot of money on expensive cars and high positions of career, but we put ten cents on integrity, truthfulness, dignity, and character. We have switched the tags. Don’t let anybody switch your tags
Title Points: Fill Up Your Spiritual Bank Account
Outline 1
Bible Text : Matthew 6:19 ““Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal;”
One Teaching Idea: (1 Sentence or Less)
Jesus Follower do not concern themselves with holding on to possesions and wealth. They refuse to store up treasures here on earth.
Christ states several reasons why living for material things is foolish. For one thing, material things do not last. Fabrics were treasured by Jews, yet moths ruin them. Rust ruins metal; thieves steal riches.
Cross Reference: Luke 12:21 ““So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.””
1st Point: Material Possesions Wont last
One Application: Treasures cannot be secure , and death would cause the person to lose them.
Personal Story: I moved to Las Vegas to become rich.
Outline 2
Bible Text: Matthew 6:20 “but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”
One Teaching Idea: (1 Sentence or Less)
How does a person store his treasures in heaven? Storing treasures in heaven includes, but is not limited to, tithing our money. It is also accomplished through bringing others to Christ and all acts of obedience to God. That “treasure” is the eternal value of whatever we accomplish on earth. Acts of obedience to God, laid up in heaven, are not susceptible to decay, destruction, or theft. Nothing can affect or change them; they are eternal.
But treasure used for God’s glory is invested in heaven where it lasts eternally. The way people use wealth is an indication of the condition of their hearts. If we spend our time and money only on business, and neglect God, then our hearts are in business and not fixed
Cross Reference: Luke 18:22 “So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.””
2nd Point: Give To Others
One Application:
We need to be depositing into our spiritual bank account, where moth and rust cannot destroy.
Every time you are serving God and being obedient to what He call you to do each day. This allows a new deposit to be placed on your behalf.
The Bible does not condemn the possession of wealth, but it does warn against the love of money and the wrong use of wealth
Personal Story: I finally got what God was saying in 2008
Outline 3
Bible Text : Matthew 6:21 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
One Teaching Idea: (1 Sentence or Less)
Wherever our focus lies, whatever occupies our thoughts and our time—that is our “treasure.” Jesus contrasted heavenly values with earthly values when he explained that our first loyalty should be to those things that do not fade, cannot be stolen or used up, and never wear out. He calls for a decision that allows us to live contentedly with whatever we have because we have chosen what is eternal and lasting.
Cross Reference: Luke 12:34 “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
3rd Point: Check Your Heart
One Application: Jesus clearly tells us that we cannot look in two directions at one time, serve two masters, and live for God and material wealth. The Bible does not condemn the possession of wealth, but it does warn against the love of money and the wrong use of wealth
Personal Story: I remember sitting in church and looking at my football bets on my ticket. I was miserable
