The New Man
Onesimus is a new man, a new creation
born from above, adopted into the family
Onesimus has changed from being a useless slave to a useful brother
in the eyes of God Onesimus was a sinner on his way to hell
someone not deserving of anything good
like the rest of the human race, a blind beggar in need of a savior
like Onesimus we were a runaway fugitive with all of the empire hunting you down
with no hope of a pardon
but Jesus took our punishment, took our guilt
God the Father has declared us not guilty
all of our sins have been forgiven
Jesus found us, changed us, cleansed us, adopted us,
not because we were running to Him, but away
V 12 Onesimus the useful one is going back to face the music
going back to his owner, to the one who has absolute control over his life
just like we have a master who has absolute power over our lives
we are looking at a new relationship today
Read Philemon 12-16
Pray
Paul’s plea
V 13 instead of you doing for me if you could
Onesimus can do it just as good as you can
but you are his owner not me you have to consent
V 10 I appeal because of love, I could order you to
V 14 this has to be your choice
according to your own free will
9:2 Humanity in the state of innocence had freedom and power to will and to do what was good and well-pleasing to God.2 Yet this condition was unstable, so that humanity could fall from it.
9:4 When God converts sinners and transforms them into the state of grace, He frees them from their natural bondage to sin7 and by His grace alone enables them to will and to do freely what is spiritually good.8
Yet because of their remaining corruption, they do not perfectly nor exclusively will what is good but also will what is evil
Paul wants Philemon to do the right thing but...
V 15 perhaps not wanting to definitively say it was the providence of God
but it’s hard to say no
an eternal brother back
A New Relationship
Emancipation
why doesn't Paul push here for the end of slavery?
it was a big part of the ancient world
hundreds of thousands of slaves in the empire
a christian rebellion would have do significant damage to the church
God the Holy Spirit knows best as to when and how to end the slavery
But what God does do is make the relationships different
V 16 Onesimus A beloved brother
V 1 Philemon a beloved brother
the same standing, equals in Gods eyes
so does God say you can go free?
What does Paul say about this relationship?
when we are in Christ all social statuses cease
we are all equal
but what does that mean?
turn to Ephesians 6 5-9.
Colossians 3 22-4 1. Paul wrote this while Onesimus was with him
you are now a slave of Jesus
Masters you also have a master in Heaven
Paul/God changed the relationship between slave and master to a beloved brother
what does James say about this
James 2 1-9.
this new Christianity changed the whole societal structure
women- men
slave- masters
poor- rich
people were seeing the love and forgiveness and wanted some
they wanted to be accepted for who they are
not what the world said
V 16
this new relationship could be fantastic ..if..
there is reconciliation
there is forgiveness
there is humility for grace to flow
relationships in our own lives
what are we doing with them?
is there reconciliation to be done, forgiveness?
