Introduction

One of the things that can make or break your faith is your ability to trust God. This becomes increasingly difficult when there are some storms brewing or when we are in the middle of one.
This psalm pictures God and His voice in the way we would view or experience a hurricane. [Challenge: read this psalm in the middle of a storm]
All David wants us to see is that this voice sits above any power that Israel knows and therfore they should submit to it.
Not only that, but this voice wants to bless them and strengthen them with peace.

The Opening (Ps 29:1-2)

Ascribe and Worship - I am called to worhip God before I even see why I need to
Glory - Distinctiveness//honour//
Strength
Ascribe and worship is a call to give what He is deserving

APPL. Notice that when it comes to worship it’s about ‘giving’ to God

Notice also that the sphere in which I give God worship is the “beauty of holiness” - Holiness is beautiful to God.

Key Terms (Ps 29:3-9)

“the voice” - used 7x, it expresses not just speech, but the power and presence of God.
Ps 18:13 “The Lord also thundered in the heavens, And the Most High uttered His voice, Hailstones and coals of fire.”
Ps 46:6 “The nations made an uproar, the kingdoms tottered; He raised His voice, the earth melted.”
Ps 68:33 “To Him who rides upon the highest heavens, which are from ancient times; Behold, He speaks forth with His voice, a mighty voice.”
Isa 30:31 “For at the voice of the Lord Assyria will be terrified, When He strikes with the rod.”
The vocie is a represenration of God’s POWER, , MAJESTY, AND AUTHORITY!
SOVEREIGNTY
God doesn’t answer to anyone but everyone must answer to God
God is under no one’s rule but all are under His
God is not in subjection on anything but everything is in subjection to God
God is not dependant on anything but everything is dependant on God

What does this imagery point to?

Ps 29:3-4 takes us back to creation when the Spirit “moved” over the water
If this is describes the one who is in control then this is good becasue creative power is great power.
The ‘voice’ is majestic - this describes something of the greatest quality
APPL. Whatever then comes from God will be of the greatest quality [inheritance, salvation, joy, peace; they are all described in unique ways because they are of great quality becasue it came from a God of the greatest quality!
Ps 29:5-6 may be a direct statement against other gods.
Historical significance - Canannite gods were worshipped in the mountain of Lebanon, of them being Baal [storm god]
Notice the progression in expressing the depth of God’s power:
God breaks cedar
God breaks the cedars of Lebanon
God makes Lebanon dance
Ps 29:7-9 the full description of God’s power is complete
The voice of God is seen in another element and in a differrent territory [fire & wilderness]
It’s also depicted in another force; an earthquake.
“everything in His temple says “glory”
Ps 29:10-11 God is worthy [What we see in YHWH we see in Jesus]
God is unaffected by the Flood - He sits as King. Everything was affected by the flood except God.
God is not just worthy but He will bless
APPL. We see Jesus! In the middle of the storm unaffected [Mk 4:37-39]. This was so because of who He is.

This is why we make a call to trust Him. Depend on Him. Give your to the one who is over the storm.
