Paul’s Plea

Paul writing to Philemon about his runaway slave Onesimus who is returning
V 8 - 16
read V 17-21
Pray

Partnership

V 17 If you Regard me as partner, comrade, brother in arms, brother in Christ
Paul is assuming
Paul is putting the responsibility on Philemon to regard Paul the same
then accept Onesimus the same way
If i showed up at your door...
treat this runaway thieving slave...
V 18 If he has wronged you,
stole from you
whatever loss because of no work
whatever he owes
charge this to my account
V 19 I will repay
O by the way… you owe me
your very life
a debt you cannot pay

In Christ

Jesus speaking to the Father
V 17 receive him as me
when you look at him, you see me
when you see him, all you will see is My righteousness
accept him as me a son with all of the rights and privileges as a heir
accept him as one of the family
V 18 charge this to my account
the sin he has done
the worship that he has stolen from you
the work he has not given you
the hours of devotional time he has given to the tv
the time you wanted to spend with him that he squandered
the offerings that you deserve he used on a new boat
V 19 I have paid it all
Grace is loves that pays a price
Grace is not cheap, a high price was paid
with my blood I have bought him
with my body on the cross I paid the price in full
all of his sins have been imputed to me, put on my account
I was treated the way he was to be treated
You owe me
you very life
I bought you with my blood
I gave my life for you
I gave you new life
I took the wrath of God for you
I brought you into the family

Refresh My Heart

V 20 I ought to have some benefit from you
Paul is saying to Philemon I have confidence in your obedience
obedience to the gospel
obedience to the things we are indebted to
see other family members as Christ does
treat them like you would Jesus
treat them like as if all of the things you have against them are paid in full
the benefit Paul and Jesus receives from us is when the Gospel is lived out in our lives
we owe a great deal to our Savior
let us refresh the heart of Jesus
