The Holy Spirit comes during Pentecost

Pentecost – Shavuot (The Feast of Weeks: end of seven weeks between Passover and Pentecost; celebrates the abundant harvest of wheat); 50 days = Pentecost.

Jesus had ascended after spending 40 days with his disciples after his Resurrection.

The disciples were told to wait; they waited for 10 days more before something happened. Uncertainty of those 10 days must have been stressful.

The countdown of each week between Passover and Shavuot anticipates the desire for and arrival of the Torah.

On Passover, the people were freed from bondage in Egypt and on Shavuot, the Torah was given and established those freed as one nation committed to serve God.

Devout Jews and Proselytes attended this religious festival

Judean Jews spoke a different dialect of Hebrew from the Galileans
Many other people, either of Jewish heritage or God-believing people who spoke other languages were there.

On this great feast day, the Holy Spirit came with very real manifestations

a sound like a violent wind
appearance of fire upon those gathered
speaking in foreign languages
In both Hebrew and Greek, a single word encompasses “breath, “wind,” and “spirit”
Jesus told Nicodemus that “the wind blows wherever it please… so it is with everyone born of the Spirit” – John 3:8
The appearance of fire would remind the apostles of God descending on Mount Sinai “in fire” – Ex. 19:18

The wind represents the presence of the Spirit, and the fire as God’s purity and purification.

The people either heard the sound like a wind or the disciples assembled speaking in their own language, and they became confused because of it.

Peter, the most respected of Jesus’ disciples stood up and spoke clearly and logically,

proving that he was not drunk as some of the people accused of them.

Peter pointed to the Prophets words recorded in the Hebrew Scriptures to explain to them what happened.

Joel 2:28-32 promised the pouring out of the Spirit on all people.

All People:

Sons and Daughters – rejecting patriarchy

Young and Old – age does not matter

Even Servants who be empowered

Supernatural Gifts – Prophecies, Visions, Dreams
Wonders – extraordinary occurrences in the heavens (the sky above) and earth (on or in the ground)

Terrible wonders expressed as blood, fire, billows of smoke, dark sky, and a blood-colored moon.

God’s life giving and empowering presence and purification by his presence were also prophesied.

All these gifts were prophesied for all people who recognize their sin and the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

The inheritance given to the people of God at Sinai through the covenant of God was expanded in those moments to all the people throughout the world.

No one was replaced, if anything, God’s blessing was made possible for everyone.

Now what will you do with the Spirit’s presence and empowerment?
Will you allow for the Spirit to purify you, blow life into you, and empower you to speak life into others?

This is what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ, the one who raises us up to be joint-heirs of the Kingdom of God.
