Read 1 Sam 13:19-23

Disarming God’s People

Philistines oppress Israel by disallowing blacksmiths
they become the sole provider for basic sharpening
cancel culture
silencing diversity in the marketplace of ideas
RESULT: disarmament of an entire army (nation)

What led to disarmament?

Disobedience- failure to “take the land”
Compromise- failure to stand apart as God’s people
Philistines grow in power and assume control

Armament of the Church

Psalm 144:1–2 ESV
1 Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle; 2 he is my steadfast love and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield and he in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.
2 Corinthians 10:4–5 ESV
4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,
Ephesians 6:10–13 ESV
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
Ephesians 6:17–20 ESV
17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

How does Satan seek to disarm the church?

doubt/substitution/redefinition
compromise
alienation/destruction
tacet approval of our own apathy/wandering
C.S. Lewis-
“Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one—the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts...”
