“ Getting close to Jesus in a storm “
Matthew 14:22–33 (KJV 1900)
(22) And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. (23) And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. (24) But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. (25) And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. (26) And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. (27) But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. (28) And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. (29) And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. (30) But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. (31) And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? (32) And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. (33) Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
Somebody today
need to be encourage
that in spite of the storm
you can still get close to Jesus
Usually we are hard on Peter
But Peter is the only one
willing
to walk to Jesus
even under adverse circumstances
But Peter was also
the only disciple
that got out of the boat
through this adverse circumstances. ( EXPLAIN )
Peter did something GREAT !!!!!!!!
what’s stopping you
from doing something great
Peter did something GREAT
Because he walked on water TWICE
Explain : verses 13 -21 ( The Feeding of the 5,000 )
In this story
people say that
this is the miracle
of the feeding of the 5,000
but to give integrity to the text
that would be improper to say
Because
under close scrutiny
Of the text
there’s at least 3 miracles in the text
[ There’s the FEEDING — There’s the FILLING — There’s the FRAGMENTS ]
[ 2 - Fish 5 - loaves of Bread ]
The Feeding — shows us that God is ABLE
The Filling — Shows us that God is ADEQUATE
The Fragments — Shows us that God is ABUNDANT
Note:
The standard Jewish loaf
of bread
that was provided
was only able
to feed 3 people. — ( 5 loaves could Feed 15 People here )
Note:
They have 5 loaves
so they need 1,662
more loaves
to feed the other 4,985
Explain: Matthew 14
[ Question : What kept the other disciple in the boat ]
[ Getting close to Jesus in a storm ]
1st: You have to get close when it’s Dark (v.25)
Matthew 14:25 (KJV 1900)
“ And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea “.
Note: Peter stepped out the boat when it was dark
1st, Watch — 6pm— 9pm
2nd. Watch — 9pm — 12am
3rd. Watch — 12am — 3am
4th. Watch — 3am — 6am
We all have
those dark moments
in life
When you have to learn
how to trust the Heart of God
when you can’t trace the Hand God ( Jesus told Peter “ COME “ )
“ COME “
Was the Heart of Jesus
Because Peter
Couldn’t actually see Jesus
Note: That’s ok that we deal with Dark moments because we walk by faith and not by sight
The disciple’s
don’t step out the boat
because it’s Dark
And they can’t see Jesus
and there’s somethings
you want do
But because you can’t see Jesus
[ Getting close to Jesus in a storm ]
1st: You have to get close when it’s Dark (v.25)
2nd. You have to get close when it’s Dangerous ( V. 29-30 )
Matthew 14:29–30 (KJV 1900)
(29) And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. (30) But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
Note: Before Peter stepped out of the boat the storm was already contrary
Note: Dangerous( Luke 10:3 ) Jesus sends the disciple’s out two by two as Lambs among Wolves
[ Getting close to Jesus in a storm ]
1st: You have to get close when it’s Dark (v.25)
2nd. You have to get close when it’s Dangerous ( V. 29-30 )
3rd: You have to get close when it’s it’s Distant (v.26-27)
Matthew 14:26–27 (KJV 1900)
(26) And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. (27) But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
Note: A trip that should have taking the disciple’s at most one hour have been in the midst of this trip right at 12 hours
Distant times is when you can't figure some stuff out
You have to trust God
when it looks like
things are not coming together (Distant)
Peter verses the Disciples
[ Getting close to Jesus in a storm ]
1st: You have to get close when it’s Dark (v.25)
2nd. You have to get close when it’s Dangerous ( V. 29-30 )
3rd: You have to get close when it’s Distant (v.26-27)
4th: You have to get close when it’s Different ( V. 26 )
Matthew 14:26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. Jesus goes to them
walking on water
(Not a boat)
(That’s different)
We want everything
to always be normal
to try it
The reason why
we don’t experience
the supernatural
power of God
is because
we don’t trust God
when things are different
Note: You have to learn how to do somethings DIFFERENT
Note: It’s different because no one in your family have done it….. ( The District - Your church - )
Different
Elijah — it wasn’t the WIND - it wasn’t the EARTHQUAKE — it wasn’t the FIRE — but it was the still SMALL VOICE
