Everyone knows where the big apple is but does anyone know mineappoolis
Tried to come up with a carpentry joke that woodwork, I think I nailed it, but nobody saw it.
Last week we talked about the water.... and listen to her response… its beautiful
John 4:15 ESV
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”
Sir… I need this… I don’t want to have to do this anymore....I don’t want to have to come out here anymore… but look this is what we see over and over again in the gospels… people coming to Jesus for the physical needs… undrstand this is a physical desire she has…
Some commentators say she is saying it in jest… that she knows he doesnt have anything to offer her water so she is almost mocking him… and you can decide where you want to go with that view, but either way, she is thinking about the physical… isn’t that what we do… don’t we concentrate on the physical need before the spiritual need...
We believe that if we can just get the job… pick up the girl… find the husbnad that everything will be straight… we long for something so we much like this woman ask Jesus for a drink… Jesus just give me the woman and I know that I won’t have a need my desire wiill be gone… and we aren’t asking for the right thing....
Help me to get an a on this test....
And understand this is just a drink… this is just water that will fix the physical in the here and now and what we are realizing is that Jesus has something much greater to offer than just this physical water. the answer for us is to look to Jesus because he is the only thing that can satisfy the hunger in our soul… and what we need is more of him… we need to ask him to fill our hearts so we dont think and go after what we really need.... JESUS
How about instead of Jesus give me that Job, we pray Jesus give me more of you so that even if you have me in this place for the rest of my life I am happy and sustained in you.... and i think some of the problem is we are tryign to live the american dream and we have a horrible view of success We have to realize we can be successful in it if hes in it
Alright, and so she says Jesus I want some of that and you can decide if the sarcasm is in her voice or not, Im not sure it really matters… and look at Jesus response...
John 4:16 ESV
16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
Stop for a second, this is kind of strange. Whats going on here… WHy on earth would he ask her to bring her husband… she just said she wanted a drink what is up with that… kind of strange right… gets weirder...
John 4:17–18 ESV
17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”
Look that’s a mic drop right there… that is all about being up in her face and pointing out what is going on. Im assuming this is hard for some of us to grasp… Jesus loves us in spite of our sin, of course, he doesn’t care about it there is grace… wrong… well there is grace… but we have to be able to seee it there is no way that we see Jesus without first knowing our sin… there is no way to know our need for him without knowing and I think that makes a very clear point
So she asks for Living water and Jesus is teaching us what has to happen before we can accept the living water of this spiritual rebirth we must first be see our sin and realize our need to be cleansed from it
You cannot avoid and run and hide from your sin. You must face it.
This is not what we are taught. we are taught we can deal with it on our own that we aren’t hurting anyone but that just isnt true… and look at what we see from this I think there are 4 things that happen to helped her to see her sin
Jesus stirred and convicted her heart. Why was that so important? because the sin had caused a huge burden in her life. Don’t think so? No one would normally go out to draw water in the middle of the day, it was too hot they would do this in the morning but she didn’t want to be there with everyone else so she went when there were going to be fewer people there… she didnt want the judgement that came from other people and how they saw her and their harsh words.. and this is so interesting becasue one of the reasons that she would have come at noon to be able to not have to think about this sin… and her Jesus is confronting her with that exact sin he is putting it right in her face....
and I know that today there are some of you here that are doing the same exact thing as this woman. You are coming in teh middle of the day to avoid the words and concerns of others...
You wear your past like a scarlet letter so you don’t want other people to see it so you avoid them… and it could happen right here in this church… you come and you know what you are dealing with and you look around this room and you think all of these people have all of their stuff together and they are living a life for Jesus and you begin to feel judged and burdened by what you know about yourself and you don’t even want to get into a conversation with them so you do whatever you can to avoid them being able to judge you.... so as soon as the service is over you skip out of here and make a beeline for the door because you donb’t want the off chance that someone may ask you and tell you how horrible of a person you are. So you don't build community theone thing you need, you run from
And here is the thing I believe that when you walk in this building you may even begin to see it and feel it and think about it more… and as I say that you may think if the holy spirit is doing that to you it must mean that God cannot be good, right how could he make me feel so awful about myself… but that’s not his intention… he doesnt want you to feel bad as you are about to see he wants you to be set free.... he wants you to lose that burden and not carry it with you everyday and that is a good thing
2. Jesus didnt let her evade her sin
She was trying to avoid the truth of what was going on, she wasn’t lying really, but she wasnt being completely honest… I don’t have a husband Jesus…I think about my kids… naw Im not eating a cookie… I ate two.... Jesus is making her face it head on…so she can get the living water that she so desperately wants.
Proverbs 28:13 ESV
13 Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.
1 John 1:9 ESV
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
James 5:16 ESV
16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
Its crystal clear we have to get it out there… we can’t avoid it… everyone does it… im not as bad as so and so.... Im not hurting anyone else… we can’t live that way we have to take all of our sins to Jesus
3. Jesus knew everything about her...
He knew the truth that no one had ever told him (Prophets from book)
He knew why her marriages had failed… He knew what she was guilty of....
Job 10:14 ESV
14 If I sin, you watch me and do not acquit me of my iniquity.
and what we like to think is we can get rid of it ourselves, we just have to forget about it or wash it off and stop doing it but thats just not the case....
Jeremiah 2:22 ESV
22 Though you wash yourself with lye and use much soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me, declares the Lord God.
4. Jesus reprimanded her sin...
We stand guilty of all of our sin… Galatians 3:10,12
Galatians 3:10–12 ESV
10 For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” 11 Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” 12 But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.”
Look at Acts 3:19
Acts 3:19 ESV
19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,
Acts 17:29–31 ESV
29 Being then God’s offspring, we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man. 30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Heres the thing, it doesnt matter what measure we judge ourselves by… we are still guilty… just think about it for a minute, lets say you are going to judge yourself based off of the teachings of Jesus at the sermon on the mount, and that could be a good measure. But even if it is that measure we use to make us a good person we will fail.... we can’t live up to it...
Ten commandments… fail....
No matter what the measure is we use to judge ourselves we will come up short and need to lower the standard to make ourselves look like the good person… and the only way we will ever measure up, especially to God’s standards is with Jesus
