Introduction
Hooptie, banger, jalopy, clunker, rust bucket—these were all names for the kind of car that I grew up riding in.
My Dad raised 3 boys by himself while he worked a full-time job and went to school full-time.
Money was tight and so we had lots of cars that never lasted very long.
My favorite was an Oldsmobile with different colored doors and if you lifted the passenger side floor mat—there was a rust hole and you could see the road speeding by underneath your feet.
It was the perfect size to accommodate an action figure with a string tied to it.
When I was younger I didn’t care—but as I got older peer pressure became something I cared about—I was always embarrassed by the squeaky, broken, rusty cars that I rode around in.
I also grew up watching the Price is Right—when it was Bob Barker.
If you’re not familiar contestants would guess the prices of consumer goods for a chance to win “showcase prizes”.
And the most exciting showcase prize to me was “A BRAAANDD NEW CARRR”
I would see that new, shiny car and day dream about how much of a difference that new car would make in my family’s life.
And how cool I would look riding in it.
And how unembarassed I would be getting dropped off in it.
A new car really wouldn’t have changed our lives very much.
This morning our text promises us something so much better than a brand new car.
Our text tells us that In Jesus We Have a Brand New Life.
And that is our main point today.
In Jesus I have a Brand New Life.
A brand new car won’t change very much—but a brand new life changes everything.
Jesus is not just an addition to your old life, Jesus is a brand new life.
The old has passed away and the new has come.
And as we begin Romans 8 today, in verses 1-13 we will see that Paul calls us to live in the new life that comes to us through faith in Jesus’ righteousness.
In Jesus we have I.
A New Freedom (1-4, II.
A New Mindset (5-8), III.
A New Indwelling (9-11), and IV.
A New Obligation (12-13)
Read Romans 8:1-13 in your Bible.
Let’s explore this now together as first discover that in Jesus we have a new freedom.
I.
A New Freedom (1-4)
As we begin unpacking our passage this morning we must give appropriate attention to the massive good news that Paul delivers in verse 1.
Romans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
In Jesus—because of all that he has done.
Because he lived a perfect life.
And because he suffered God’s perfect justice.
When we turn away from our sin and turn toward Christ.
There is no condemnation for those who are in Jesus.
And this is massive.
Our new life starts with mountains upon mountains of debt being paid for and wiped away.
(Mountain picture in PowerPoint)
If you’ve ever been hiking—you know that the payoff of climbing a mountain is the view you get at the top.
I want you to imagine that you have climbed a mountain and at the top you can see as far as your eyes capability mountain after mountain reaching high into the heavens.
Each one is just as massive and steep as the one you climbed.
Now I want you to think about how that mountain is made.
It’s not just one big chunk of rock.
It’s many boulders, rocks, pebbles all piled on top of one another and held together by gravity and trees.
With that in your mind.
Now imagine that this mountain you are standing on is made of your sin.
Each rock, pebble, boulder is your sin—your rebellion—stacked one on another lifting you before the face of God.
And as you look out at each vista, reaching into the heavens—know that those are your sins as well.
And it keeps going—you can’t even see all that you are guilty before the Lord for.
Can you see it?
Friends, we are far more sinful than we want to believe.
And in Jesus all of this has been forgiven.
All of this has been wiped away.
It has been redeemed.
Our past is a monument to the grace of God—how merciful is God?
He has forgiven a sinner like me.
And like you.
And don’t be tempted to think that you did not stand—or do not stand if you don’t follow Jesus—upon a mountain of your own sin.
Maybe you think, “I don’t think I have mountains—maybe a couple of hills—one or two.”
That is self-deception and misunderstanding of how lost and broken you are.
The Bible is clear.
Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
Isaiah 64:6 “We have all become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
We all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.”
Our situation is so dire—we are in such desperate need of a savior.
And God has given us one.
Isaiah 53:6 “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
For all of God’s people—their sin has been laid on Jesus—and he took the punishment that was due to us.
There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus!!
Will someone say, “Amen?!”
And let me draw your attention now to the wording of God’s Word.
What does it say?
There is therefore now some condemnation?
There is therefore now less condemnation?
There is therefore now NO condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus!
And it’s stated even stronger in the Greek—the Greek means there is no—none—no possibility of—case closed—condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Let me encourage you to remember that.
Because, believer, you need to be reminded and live in the truth of this massive statement.
When Satan accuses you of your mistakes—when he accuses you of your past—and he lies to you that your mistakes, your sins, your failures are going to condemn you before God who is a righteous judge.
You quote and remember and believe Romans 8:1.
God said, there is no condemnation.
My king Jesus took it all.
There was none left for me.
My sin is as far away from me as the east is from the west.
I am a new creation with a new heart and a new life.
And while my sanctification hasn’t caught up yet to my justification my God—who never lies—has assured me that it will!
He will finish the work He started in me!
When Satan tries to remind you of your past—your 10 years ago past, your last year past, your 10 minutes ago past—you remind him of Jesus’ past.
Jesus lived for me.
Jesus died for me.
Jesus was raised for me.
He did this.
It’s done.
It’s finished.
And Because of Jesus’ past—my past brings me no condemnation!
And some of you may be thinking, “My past too?”
Yes your past too.
