1-4 5-14 15-23

1-4

Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth, the grandson of Saul and son of Johnathan, was able to present such a bounty to David because he was charged with tending the fields that were Saul’s for Mephibosheth and Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem and ate with David so he had ne need of the harvest.
Ziba does not do this out of kindness and loyalty though, he falsely tells David that Mephibosheth stayed in Jerusalem to try and regain the kingdom as he traditionally he would be the “rightful” heir to the throne in order to get all the lands that David gave back to Mephibosheth for himself.
David makes a rash and wrongful decision to do just what Ziba was scheming for and gives Ziba all of the lands that he gave back to Mephibosheth.

5-14

Shimei is a distant relative of Saul and a Benjamite, all Benjamites are related really, and Shimei does not care for David.
Shimei could be cursing David for his thought that David was at fault for the downfall of Saul, or for the murders of Abner, Ish-bosheth, or Uriah. But whatever his reasoning he sees the revolt of Absalom and David’s flight as God’s punishment, and it is.
David forbids Abishai from killing Shimei as David has accepted that this is from God.

15-23

Absalom and all who were with him come back from Hebron and enter Jerusalem along with Ahithophel, the grandfather of Bathsheba. Hushai having made it back to Jerusalem before Absalom gives his loyalty to Absalom as David had told him to do so he could be a counter couselor to Ahithophel and pass information on what is going on back to David.
Ahithophel then advises Absalom to take the 10 concubines that David left to tend to the palace and on the roof of the palace have sexual relations with them just as Nathan’s prophesy from God said would happen. David took Bathsheba and killed Uriah in secret but his punishment would be out in the open for all to see.
The counsel of Ahithophel was so highly regarded by David before Absalom’s revolt, and by Absolam now that they placed it as high as consulting God via the Urim and Thummim. This is why David wanted Hushai to back to Jerusalem so he could give counter advice as we will see in the next chapter.
