“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.
But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
Jesus presents us here with an imperative, a command.
Enter through the narrow gate.
Jesus is calling His disciples to move through the narrow gate, so let me ask you, What is the narrow gate? Hint: look for context.
The answer to the narrow gate is the golden rule...
So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
But it also goes deeper because Jesus is also referring to His teachings in the Sermon on The Mount.
His teachings on divorce.
Letting your yes be yes
Seeking Revenge
Loving your enemies
On judging others
On Prayer
All of the things He has taught up to this point.
So, Why does Jesus call it the narrow gate?
Verse 14. Few will find it, but that is because few will seek it.
There is a contrast here for He just does not talk about the narrow gate but contrasts it to the wide gate.
What is the wide gate? It is the things the world tells us are we are to pursue.
Where does it lead? Destruction.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Paul defines here in Romans what Jesus is calling the wide and narrow gates.
The wide gate, following things that are sinful, lead to death, Jesus calls destruction.
The narrow gate is the gift from God, giving us eternal life. It is only found in Jesus and His teachings.
But why will only a few find it?
Because, only a few will seek it.
So, Let’s break into groups and discuss how we can apply this warning to our life.
How do we enter the narrow gate?
Why is it so easy to find ourselves on the wide road?
Why do people stay on the wide road, even when destruction is pointed out?
When Jesus says only “a few find it” is He limiting the number who can enter or is He meaning something else?
What is the one thing keeping you from being on the narrow road? How can this group help you overcome it?
