I. The Bride of Christ
9 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, “Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.”
At this point, the vision moved John’s thoughts
from the original creation
to Mystery Babylon the Great the mother of Harlots
and the rebuilt city of Babylon.
1 Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters,
Now, that same angel came to John saying, “Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.”
The first time, John saw the harlot. The second time, John saw the bride. Both of these women represented a great city. (Many Waters - Peoples)
God’s nature has more than one characteristic. He loves and judges; saves and condemns. Both of these characteristics are demonstrated here.
Imagine, one of the same angels who poured out a bowl of God’s wrath is now inviting John to see God’s love for his Church.
A special union* will exist between Jesus and the Church
similar to the union that exists between a bridegroom and bride upon their marriage.
7 Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.”
Ben Witherington III - John wants to imply a direct contrast between the two great cities—harlot versus bride, gaudy versus beautiful, full of disease and death versus full of new life.

10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
On both occasions, this angel carried John away in the Spirit. But there is a difference. The first time, the angel took John into the wilderness (17:3).
And this time, the angel took John to a great and high mountain. The first time, John saw Babylon hurled down with violence (18:21).
This time, John saw the New Jerusalem descending out of heaven. How far it will descend is a matter of debate. Nothing is said about it coming to rest on the new earth.
It may do that, but it also may remain suspended above. One thing is for sure: what goes on in the Holy City will be more important than what takes place on the new earth.
The Holy City will be the headquarters of the new creation. John was in the Spirit (an ecstatic spiritual state), which put him in close touch with God and made him able to see visions.

11 having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.
When the fifth angel dumps his bowl of God’s wrath on the Antichrist’s throne, his kingdom will be plunged into darkness (16:10).
10 Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became full of darkness; and they gnawed their tongues because of the pain.
They still blaspheme God and did not repent of their deeds
2. But the Holy City will descend out of heaven lit with the Shekinah glory of God.
His light will burst forth in brilliance like the sparkle of a large and expensive jasper (opal, diamond, or topaz) and be crystal clear.
Jasper is the first stone in the breastplate of the High Priest (see Illustration #2). It is opaque and translucent like a diamond, and is a symbol of purity and holiness.
Ben Witherington III - God’s own presence is described in these very terms at Rev. 4:3 when his appearance on the throne is approximated. John is saying that the city partakes of the very character of God, and of God’s brilliance.
3 And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald.
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you’d would like to receive Jesus today, please pray this prayer with all of us:
Lord I believe that Jesus is the son of God, and that He died On the cross for my sins and His resurrection from the dead gives me eternal life. I ask forgiveness of my sins, and I accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. Amen.
