25 Leviticus Holy Sabbaths and Years
A message of Restoration of both, the land, and the people.
God Owns the Land:
Exodus 21 & Deuteronomy 15 are applicable here.
The land is loaned to or leased to the people. God dictates how He wants it used.
Every 7thyear is a year of rest. (Tied to the Day of Atonement)
Every 50thyear is a year of reset. Restoration if you will. (Tied to the Day of Atonement)
· Restoring everyone back to their home / land prevents a repeated cycle of poverty.
Let’s look at Leviticus 25 and see how it might apply to us.
God’s Promise of RestV.1-17
· V.1-7 A Year of Rest
o The Land shall have and the people shall keep a sabbath for it.
· V.8 – The jubilee is the 50thyear, 7 sabbath’s having passed
· V.9-10 Trumpet the jubilee. All is set at liberty.
o Then shalt thou cause the trumpet of the jubile to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of atonement shall ye make the trumpet sound throughout all your land. 10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.
· V.13 In the year of this jubilee ye shall return every man unto his possession.
o Exodus 21:1-2 Now these are the judgments which thou shalt set before them. 2 If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.
o Deuteronomy 15:1 At the end of every seven years thou shalt make a release.
· READ Luke 4:16-21
o God has proclaimed an earthly Jubilee – Mankind has been set free
God’s Promise of Protection and ProvisionsV.18-22
· V.18-19 Contains the conditional promise of safety
· V.20-22 Contains the promise of provisions to cover the Jubilee Sabbath.
· That does not mean life was without challenges.
· Psalms 78:56 Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies:
o Remember the years of exile: 2 Chronicle 36:20 And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia: 21 To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.
God’s Promise of OwnershipV.23-34
· V.23 The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine;
o V.25-28 identifies who is included.
§ The poor man
§ The man without a redeemer (family member)
§ The man who is unable, perhaps unemployed
o Come the Jubilee, you needed to remember who owns the land (GOD) and return the land, the home and or the person. All was to be restored.
God’s Promise of Freedom from DebtV.35-55
· Interest free loans that could be redeemed at any time.
· They were not to lord over one another and thereby keep a man in poverty.
· Laws were made to cover one who was enslave by debt to a stranger – anyone could be his redeemer.
· V.55 For unto me the children of Israel are servants; they are my servants whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. God would go to whatever means were necessary to free and to keep free HIS servants.
We are under a new covenant wherein the promises of God are:
Rest:
· Matthew 11:28-29 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Life:
· Eternal Life – John 3:16
· An abundant life
o John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
o Luke 12:15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
o With tribulations
· A life free from bondage –
o Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
o Galatians 5:1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Peace
· John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
· John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
God is just as willing to free and keep free HIS servants today. 1 Corinthians 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
The question is are you willing to serve Him? And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. Joshua 24:15.
