JOHN 14:16, 17, 26
INTRODUCTION. The Holy Spirit is a person, and we shall see in our study that there are at least three things that prove that He is a person.

I. THE PERSONALITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS PROVED BY THE NAMES GIVEN TO HIM IN THE WORD OF GOD.

A. He is called “Comforter”—John 14:16; 16:7. The same word is used in 1 John 2:1 speaking of Christ.

B. The personal pronoun “He” and “Him” are used when speaking of the Holy Spirit. John 14:16, 17. John 16:13, 14.

C. He is mentioned along with the Father and the Son in Matt. 28:19—Thus He is co-equal with God the Father, and God the Son.

II. THE PERSONALITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS PROVED BY THE WORKS ASCRIBED TO HIM IN THE WORD OF GOD.

A. He is the author and interpreter of the Word of God. 2 Peter 1:20, 21. 1 Cor. 2:9–14. The Modernist is unable to interpret God’s Word. He being unsaved (a natural man) cannot understand it.

B. The Holy Spirit bestows spiritual gifts. 1 Cor. 12:1–11. Note: He does this according to His own will.

III. THE PERSONALITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT PROVED BY THE WORKS HE IS DOING NOW IN THE LIFE OF THE BELIEVER AND THE CHURCH.

A. He makes intercession for the believer. Rom. 8:26.

B. He directs the Church—He is the Church’s administrator.

1. He sends out missionaries. Acts 13:1–4.

2. He calls pastors. Acts 20:28.

3. He commands and directs the followers of the Lord Jesus Christ. Acts 16:6, 7.

C. Every church needs a Spirit-directed program.
