Jesus’ Ministry Travels

Introduction

Approaching the end of Jesus earthly ministry
First part was Him establishing His purpose for God’s people - that He/the Son of God, has come to save His people from their sins
Now He is focused on the work He must do at the Cross
He continues to teach God’s will
He continues to address the cost of discipleship
He continues to explain His mission to save His people
He continues to prepare His followers for what will happen in Jerusalem
He continues to press on toward Jerusalem
Today: Jesus corrects His apostles concerning what lies ahead for them, and the nature of His kingdom

Mark 10:35–45 ESV
And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized, but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.” And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

The ignorance of the Lord’s disciples

James and John ask Jesus for the first places in His kingdom of glory
They say they are confident in their ability to drink from their Master’s cup (they completely misunderstand what this entails) and be baptized in His baptism
Three times Jesus has prophesied His coming trial, torture, death and resurrection
They still think His coming kingdom will be here on earth
They had no doubts about their power to face whatever the future held
In spite fo their faith, grace, love - they didn’t know their own hearts, or the nature of the path they were on
They still dreamed of earthly crowns and earthly rewards - they didn’t know what kind of men they were
This is how most new Christians are, when they first turn to Christ
Tend to expect far more present enjoyment of their new faith than the Gospel tells us to expect
They forget the cross and the trials, they only think of the crown - the eternal rewards
We tend to over rate our own ability to stand trials and temptations
We often gain our wisdom through hard experience, after many disappointments and failures
This case tells us that solid and careful judgment is important
Like James and John, we are right in believing Jesus is King of Kings and will one day rule the earth
Lets not forget like James and John, that every Christian must bear the cross before entering the kingdom of God
Acts 14:22 ESV
strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.
Lets not over estimate our own strength and brag that we can do whatever Christ requires
We need to beware of spiritual arrogance, when we first begin our Christian journey - it may save a humiliating fall

Notice the praise Jesus has for lowliness and dedication to the good of others

The other ten apostles were unhappy with James and John, because of their request to the Master
Their ambition and desire for fame made them jealous at the thought that anyone would have a place above themselves
Jesus recognized this immediately, and like a good doctor, provided corrective medicine
He tells them that their ideas of greatness are greatly misguided
He repeats what He said in the last chapter: Mark 9:35 “ “If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.””
Jesus used Himself as an example: Mark 10:45 “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.””
We need to watch and pray against self-esteem and pride
This is a feeling deeply rooted in our hearts
Many solid Christians have come out from the world, taken up the cross, forsaken their own righteousness, only to get irritated and annoyed when a brother or sister receives more honor than they
Phil 2:3 “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”
We are truly blessed when we can rejoice when others are exalted, though we are overlooked or passed by
Everyone who seeks to walk in Christ’s steps must work to be useful to others
We need to strive to do good in this day
There is always an opportunity for doing this, if we have the will and desire
True greatness: not an admiral or a general, a national leader or a famous celebrity
True greatness: devoting ourselves, body and soul and spirit to the wonderful work of making our fellow men and women more holy and happy
It is the ministers, the church workers, the missionaries, who are truly great in the sight of God
While they live, they are mocked and persecuted, but they will be remembered on high - their names are written in heaven - they will receive praise and honor there forever
We need to remember these things, while we help all men and women and be servants for Christ’s sake
We need to leave the world better, holier and happier than when we were born - this is truly Christ-like and our reward will be eternal

“The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many”

This is an important statement that should be treasured in the minds of all true Christians
This text proves beyond doubt that Christ’s death was an atonement for our sins
This was not an ordinary death, like the death of a martyr or other holy men
It was public payment by our almighty representative for the debts or sinful people to a holy God
We were hostages to sin and Satan. It was a ransom, which God provided, to obtain liberty for sinners, who were bound in the chain of their sins
Jesus’ death made a full and complete payment for all our sins, past present and future
He took our sins to the cross with Him
Isaiah 53:6 “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”
When Jesus died, He died for us; when He suffered, He suffered for us; when He hung on the cross, He hung as our substitute; when his blood flowed, it was the price of our souls
All of us who trust in Christ can take comfort that we build on a sure foundation
We may be sinners, but Christ bore our sins
We may be helpless debtors, but Christ paid our debts
We may deserve to be shut up forever in the prison of hell; but thanks be to God, Christ paid a full and complete ransom for us - He paid the fine, the price
The door is wide open, the prisoners may go free
We all may know this by our own heartfelt experience, and walk in the blessed freedom of the children of God

The Gospel

1 Corinthians 15:3–4 ESV
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Romans 10:9 ESV
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
