Introduction

Mark has a unique presentation of Jesus. Jesus is God’s minister/servant
While the date, authorship, has sparked debates in the theologian circles, it is certain that it came from God.
This means it has power,. . .life changing power!

There seems to be. . .

a stress on the deeds and the strengths of Jesus in this prresentation of the gospel.

Our Text

Mark 2:1–13 NASB95
When He had come back to Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that He was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the door; and He was speaking the word to them. And they came, bringing to Him a paralytic, carried by four men. Being unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying. And Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?” Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, said to them, “Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts? “Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk’? “But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic, “I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home.” And he got up and immediately picked up the pallet and went out in the sight of everyone, so that they were all amazed and were glorifying God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this.” And He went out again by the seashore; and all the people were coming to Him, and He was teaching them.
Capernaum was a fishing village established during the time of the Hasmoneans, located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee.
There was nothing really special about this town except that Jesus was there!
So even though it was not the biggest, best, brightest, God’s biggest, best, and brightest was there; Jesus!

vs. 1-2 - Mark builds the setting

Jesus had left because of the crowds.
He moved from the hotspots to the outskirts “but they were coming to Him from everywhere” Mk 1:45
Now He’s back in Ministry Central, and the crowds gathered once again
If there was time, we would discuss how the best place to be is where Jesus is!
But here have. . .

A Dire Situation

Mk 2:3-5 “And they came, bringing to Him a paralytic, carried by four men. Being unable to get to Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the paralytic was lying. And Jesus seeing their faith said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.””
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN PARALYZED?
This ailment left you without movement, without strength, without freedom, ultimately without hope.
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN PARALYZED?

This was IMPOSSIBLE. . .but this is just the situation that is tailor-made for Jesus

They just need to “get the impossible to Jesus”

so they made. . .

A Daring Decision

We need to make this journey
When they finally got there, they couldn’t get in becasue of the crowd
We need to get him in
“they removed the roof”

APPLICATION

What do you do when you’re faced with the impossible?
What we do sometimes is: make our own plans, and I ask God to cosign it
Do we make every effort to Get it to Jesus? If there is a problem, He’s the solution-a question, He’s the answer-a need, He’s the supply-
What about those four? [not sure if they were friends]
But. . .I don’t mind if I had some friends that will pick me up and carry me to Jesus - these are the type of friends you need because sometimes you don’t have the energy, strength, will to Go To Jesus. . .but I may have two or three.
The friends you DON’T need are the ones who say: “leave the church” etc.
“the fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much”
These men knew that they couldn’t help, but they can get him to someone who can - APPL. when I can’t, Jesus can
They were willing to spend TIME, ENERGY, FINANCES [who’s fixing the roof????]
As usual there was . . .

A Dissenting Oppostion

Mk 2:6-10 “But some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, “Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?” Immediately Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, said to them, “Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts? “Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up your pallet and walk’? “But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the paralytic,”
Instead of being happy with the message. They were just waiitng for a slip up - But instead they missed the message
“Who alone can forgive sins, but God” they were right but they didn’t understand Jesus was God.
Jn 1:14; Matt 1:23; 2Jn 7 - Jesus was God in the flesh

Jesus’ humanity does not negate His deity

As a man he was born, but as God He’s eternal
As a man he was subject to sicknesses but as God He healed all diseases
As a man he sailed on water, but as God he walked on the water
As a man he sat through a storm, but as God He stilled the storm
As a man he died, but as God. . .he defeated the grave
This is seen in the term “Son of Man” [14x in the book]
Jesus gets to teachin [vs. 8-10]
“which is easier” - In their minds to say “sins are forgiven” is eaiser because it can’t be authenticated. . .That’s impossible. . .
Jesus, then says [my translation] “let me do something that’s impossible that you CAN see”
Then came. . .

A Divine Solution

Mk 2:11 ““I say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home.””
Three imperatives: GET UP, PICK UP, GO HOME
This is what happens when you put the impossible in the hands of Jesus.
There are things that impossible with man but not with God.
In the RIGHT hands, you can get good results The odds change in Jesus’ hands
This man was IMMOBILE, NO STRENGTH, NO HOPE, NOTHING WAS CONNECTED.
THEN the four, put him in the hands of Jesus. . .
[Illustration - look at him get up]
All of a sudden he who could not get up GOT UP, PICKED UP AND WALKED HOME
He came being carried on a bed he left carrying the bed
He came a sinner he left with sins forgiven
He came with no movement but Jesus gave him life

Whatever your impossible is, put in Jesus’ hands

Marriage, boss, children, finances, addictions, struggles etc.
Whatever you’ve been trying is not working
