Chapter 1

A Believers Responsibility

INTRODUCTION:

1. SPEAK SOUND DOCTRINE

Titus 2:1 says "But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine."

What does it mean when we say sound doctrine.  I’m not sure about this church, but in many places where I have been, if the word doctrine is mentioned, people squeal.  They say “We don’t need doctrine!  Just teach the Bible.”

But my friends, doctrine is important ad the Bible is filled with doctrine.

Doctrine is simply defined as “something that is taught or a principle or position or the body of principles in a branch of knowledge or system of belief."  Doctrine is not some weird heavy theological talk from theologians in ivory towers.  Doctrine is the very system of beliefs from which we can understand the salvation offered to us by God.

The word doctrine or doctrines is used 14 times in the new testament.

But what does Paul mean when he refers to sound doctrine?

Sound doctrine simply means healthy doctrine. The idea of teaching sound doctrine is common in the pastoral letters that Paul wrote. 1 Timothy 1:10 says “and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching." 2 Tim 1:13 says “Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus." Titus 1:9 says “" holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict."

Why would Paul’s emphasis be so much on sound doctrine.  Earlier in the letter of Titus, Paul was talking about rebellious men.  He says in verses 10 - 12: “For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, 11. who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain. 12. One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.

Paul is contrasting right doctrine and living with the false doctrines being taught in the church in Titus earlier in the passage.  The task that Paul was assigning to Titus and secondarily to all servants of God, was to teach what was right for sound doctrine.  Many times, we believers are guilty of a great gulf between our words and our actions.  We say one thing but we do another.  We say we want to live godly lives but our actions tell the world that we are not different than they are.

I’m not sure what that statics are in Ecuador, but in the United States, the rate of teen pregnancy in the church is higher then outside the church.  The rate of divorce is higher.  The rate of immorality and use of pornography is higher in the church.  My brothers and sisters, this should not be.  Our lives should reflect our beliefs and our beliefs should reflect our doctrine and our doctrine must be sound or we as believers will not have not impact on our town, our providence or our nation.

It is time my friends that we study sound doctrine.  this verse is the keynote for the book Titus.  It is the practical out living of healthy doctrine through good works.

But the idea of healthy doctrine is also one of healthy thinking.  Our thoughts affect our very being.  Scientist have discovered that the way the mind stores memories is the same whether the event being recorded was real or imaginary. Paul says in Colossians 3:2 "2. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth." Romans 12:2 says “"2. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect."

If we are allowing God’s healthy teaching to renew our minds, we will reflect God’s glory to a dying world.  The Bible is a book that teaches us how to live.  How can we as believers say we believe this book but yet ignore the truths that govern our lives.  Sometimes, what God teaches us does not make us comfortable, but it is what we need to hear in order to live how God expects us to live.

It’s very easy to stray from the truth.  It is not a new phenomena but has occurred throughout the centuries of the church.  James Orr who wrote over 100 years ago said “Everyone must be aware that there is at the present time a great prejudice against clear and systematic thinking about divine things.  Men prefer, one cannot help seeing, to live in a region of haze and indefiniteness in regard to these matters.  They want their thinking to be fluid and indefinite - something that can be changed with the times, and with the new lights which they think are being constantly brought to bear upon it, continually taking on new forms and leaving the old behind.”

Lewis Sperry Chafer who founded the Dallas Theological Seminary said in his Systematic Theology “Systematic Theology, the greatest of the sciences, has fallen upon evil days... The unchanging emphasis in the Scriptures upon doctrine, which subject is referred to in the New Testament more than forty times and is that to which a Christian is to “take heed”  stands as a silent rebuke, whether heeded or not, to all modern notions which belittle the importance of Dogmatic Theology, and also stands as a corrective to those who neglect any portion of it...

The present situation is not one of passing moment. As well might a medical doctor discard his books on anatomy and therapeutics as for the preacher to discard his books on Systematic Theology; and since doctrine is the bone structure of the body of revealed truth, the neglect of it must result in a message characterized by uncertainties, inaccuracies, and immaturity.

Before we can live godly lives in a sinful world, we need to know the rules of the game.  We need to be taught and teach the healthy doctrine of the word of God.

Paul wanted Titus to teach sound doctrine to the believers so that their lives and good deeds would reflect the salvation they had been given.  In order to be effective witnesses in this sinful world, We, the people of God must know the truth that leads to spiritual health.

Lets study some steps that Paul have given to guide us in living out our christian lives.

Steps for Godly Living (v2:2-8)

Titus 2:2-8 says” "2. Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance. 3. Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, 4. so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5. to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored. 6. Likewise urge the young men to be sensible; 7. in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified, 8. sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us."

First let study how older men are to behave.  the characteristics here are characteristics of maturity.

Paul has divided this passage into two parts.  The first is characteristic Paul teaches is that  of maturity then temperance, being dignified, and sensible.  Marks of maturity should be characterized by mark of godliness.  In this case, sound in faith, love and perseverance.  All of these characteristics are appropriate for all believers but in especially for older men who are naturally looked up to as leaders in the body of Christ whether or not they are in an official office.

The idea of older men in this passage is men of physical age and maturity.

Temperate also means sober.  Some translations use clear-headed.  This man is to be wise in his decision making and careful when making judgements.  He is to be clear on what really matters and decisive in make godly choices.  He uses his God given talents and gifts, his time, his money and his energy.  He is a man with right and godly priorities.

Templado también significa sobrio.  Algunas traducciones utilizan mente despejada.

A Godly man should be reverent and dignified.  Age makes some people callous, bitter and cynical.  But a man who is healthy in the faith is thankful, optimistic and good company.  They should be sound in love.  Love is not-self centered.  It thinks of others and manifests itself in giving.  Godly men should be men who are patient.

If you’re in this category of man, what kind of man are you?  Are you impatient?  Are you stingy?  Do you fail to love your brethren?

Next we look at older women.

Miramos después a más viejas mujeres.

Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, 4. so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children.

First Paul called on older women to be reverent, they are not to be gossips or drunkards.  Not only were they to be reverent, they are to be examples to younger.  What better way to bring up the young ladies in Christ than for an older women to mentor what is Godly behavior.  Paul give older women not only the responsibility to teach but he also told them what to teach.

Paul wanted the older women in the church families were grown and many have had two much time on their hands to be active in mentoring the younger women. 1 Tim 5:13-14 says "13. At the same time they also learn to be idle, as they go around from house to house; and not merely idle, but also gossips and busybodies, talking about things not proper to mention. 14. Therefore, I want younger widows to get married, bear children, keep house, and give the enemy no occasion for reproach;"

Titus was to encourage these older women in the church to develop a ministry teaching younger women what is good.  Unlike younger women who have children in the house, Older women have an opportunity to reach outside of their homes and share what they have learned from those who would profit from it the most.

What a wonderful example to the world is an older women who follows these guidelines.

Lerı́n, A. 500 ilustraciones (74).

Next, lets look at the duties of younger women. Titus 2:4 and 5 says: they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, 5. to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.

Why should the younger women learn from the older?   Older women have year of experience to pass onto the young.  If the older generation does not pass pass on it’s experience to the younger, then the next generation is doomed to learned the hard way, repeating the mistakes of the past.   It is a wise young person that will cultivate friendships with godly older Christians and solicit their advice and correction.

Paul is encouraging the young women to learn to love their husbands.  What does a man desire more from his wife above all other things?  Respect.  and what does the women desire more than all else from her husband?  To be loved.  A women who loves and respects her husband acknowledge the man as the head of the household.  She will love her children and care for them.

This list in Titus give us seven areas for a young women to be Godly.  The first half is what they are to be and second is what they are to do.  Young women are to love their husband, love their children, be self-controlled, pure, busy at home.  The word used, is domestic, kind and subject to their husbands.

How different our Christian homes would be if younger women follow this list.  Some of these items are hard to accept.  Our culture doesn’t like the wife to stay home and care for the children.  They want careers and power.  They want to dominate their homes and their lives.  But those that want to honor God will follow his guidelines.

It is tragic when a Christian home is a poor testimony for Christ because of disobedient and careless wives and husbands whose values are confused.

Obedience to husbands is hard for our culture to take.  Ephesians 5:22 says “Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord."

But what about when a wife is smarter and more gifted than her husband?  She should encourage and aid him to be active in leading the home and serving the church.

Dr. Joe R. Brown of Rochester, Minnesota tells of trying to get a physical history of a patient. The man’s wife answered every question the doctor asked. Finally, Dr. Brown requested that she leave the room, but after she left found that her husband couldn’t speak. Calling the wife back, Dr. Brown apologized for not realizing the man had aphasia—loss of speech—and couldn’t speak a word.

The wife was astonished. She didn’t know it either.

La esposa estuvo asombrada. Ella no lo sabía tampoco.

At her Golden Wedding celebration, A grandmother told guests the secret of her happy marriage: “On my wedding day, I decided to make a list of ten of my husband’s faults which, for the sake of our marriage, I would overlook.”

As the guests were leaving, a young matron whose marriage had recently been in difficulties asked the grandmother what some of the faults were that she had seen fit to overlook. Grandmother said, “To tell you the truth, my dear, I never did get around to listing them. But whenever my husband did something that made me hopping mad, I would say to myself, “Lucky for him that’s one of the ten!””

A Godly women who follows Pauls guidelines will win the love of her husband and the respect of those around her.

Young women should be discrete.  This means having a fine sense of what is appropriate for them as Christians and avoiding extremes.  Somedays I’m scared to walk down the street.  Not because of crime, but because of the clothing or lack thereof that women today are wearing.  It’s shameful to see see even Christian women who are not discrete in their behavior.

Finally Paul turn to the younger men which included Titus.  Lets review, first, Titus was to encourage the older men to exercise self control.  Then he was supposed to encourage the young women to live godly lives and encourage them to train the younger women.

Next younger men were to show self-control.  Titus himself was supposed to be an example  of the living.

It’s interesting that Paul spells out six qualities for older men to emulate and then when he comes to younger men, he states just one. Now that could be because older men have more responsibility and more things to work on, or it could mean that this one quality for younger men is so important that everything else will take care of itself if this one is embraced. Drop down to verse six: “Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled.” The word “encourage” means to “call alongside” and in essence means, “I beg of you, please.”

Young men are frequently impulsive, indulgent, volatile, and arrogant and therefore are urged to be self-controlled. Younger men must submit and surrender their passions to Christ as Proverbs 25:28 makes clear: “Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control.”

Why is it important for believers to live godly lives?

By living godly lives, we will be an example of Good deeds and reflect the Glory of God and the salvation that we have been given.

In his public ministry of teaching Titus must show an integrity, seriousness, and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned. Paul was always concerned lest those who oppose be provided ammunition for their attacks. Far better, said the apostle, that they be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us. They would not cease their attacks, of course, but they might at least be embarrassed by having to make up their own false accusations.

What is our motivation for living out these principals in our daily lives?  Philipians 2:14-16 says “"14. Do all things without grumbling or disputing; 15. so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world, 16. holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain."

By living out these godly principals, we are salt and light in a dark world that needs to see the light of the Gospel.

That light of the Gospel is salvation offered to each man through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:8 says “"8. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."

Romanos 5:8 dice: “"8.

It is not by good works or anything you can do but only by the work of Christ can you receiving eternal life.  God wait for us to come to him.  But he came to us and offered his Son as a sacrifice.  A risen Christ today is offering you the opportunity to come and receive that gift of eternal life through blood.  Today is the day of salvation.  He can give you new life and teach you how to live that Godly life that will reflect his glory.
