Thesis:
According to God, being first, having authority, achieving greatness, and Lordship come from the domain of humility.
Promises to deliver:
How to move to the front of the line in God’s eyes
Describe where true and ultimate authority comes from
Show you where greatness comes from
Introduction:
Humanity strives to be large and in charge.
People like to give orders as opposed to receiving them.
Humility demonstrates "The Fruit of the Spirit" when in conflict with the call of the flesh in every situation.
The Humble goes to the front of the Line.
This past winter, Greg, Tom, and I would meet early Saturday morning to walk 5 miles at the Yorktown Mall before it would open its stores.
We were amazed at the Line that would form at one of the stores, which we believe was an outlet for Nordstroms.
Those people in Line were using the human logic that being first in Line means getting a great deal.
Not only that, but you would beat others to that good deal because those deals would be limited.
God and spiritual things don't work like that.
With God, there is no limit on the good deals.
With God, cheating, backstabbing, skipping, taking advantage of your neighbor, and the like do not put you in the front of the Line.
Ya’ll not going to like this next teaching.
You know how you didn’t like the teaching about the money that just rolled up to you and you thought it was a blessing?
Listen to this...
The carnal nature is against this teaching.
Have you ever gone to a busy restaurant and had to wait?
While waiting to be seated, someone else who just walked in ten minutes later was taken straight to their table.
How did that make you feel?
We certainly do not humble ourselves; we get irate!
Being first spiritually is not the same as being first carnally.
Your being first spiritually does not make others second spiritually.
Because God lifts you up does not mean He forsakes others to make you first.
Example: Birthday candles can continue to light other candles on fire.
Promise #1 Revealed: Being in the front of the line with God, does not make others second class citizens.
You are not more important than others with Godly Humility, you lift others up and God lifts you up.
It would be better for us to be humble, meaning doing things God's way and not our way.
We ultimately are better served not thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought.
God gives the Humble Authority.
Man likes to be the boss.
None of us enjoys being bossed around by others.
We want to tell others what to do.
We like authority because we think we know what's best.
In this world, our desire is to Lord over humanity like we Lord over our possessions.
Promise #2 Revealed: The right authority is given not taken, and God gives authority to His servants.
You want authority, then serve God.
Proper authority is God's prescription.
He gives authority to His servants, and His servants serve others, not themselves.
The Apostle Paul was a servant to both God and man.
Consider the authority Paul received from the Master by his service.
Joseph humbled himself in the Pharoh's household and served him, and Pharoh put all things under his authority.
Those who make themselves boss are putting themselves at odds with the proper authority they seek.
Greatness is the result of Humility.
Man has three God-given needs:
To be loved.
To be secure.
To be significant.
The need to be significant drives humanity in the desire to be great; just like in other areas, we have warped the meaning of greatness.
I believe the attributed benefits of being great cause us to warp its meaning.
For example, we think what comes with greatness is the following:
Money/ Income
Status/ Popularity
Financial Security/ Getting what we want
Lordship/ Leadership
First Choice/ We go First
Influence/ People listen
Less Work/ Take it easy
Etc.
When we see these benefits as things we must attain for ourselves, we miss the mark and warp the process.
Humanity should receive all these things from God, not be wrangled by your own doing.
It might seem backward, but to be first, you must serve others.
Promise #3 Revealed: If you want to be great; if you want to have authority; if you want to be first; then serve others.
Conclusion:
Promises to deliver/ Promises kept:
How to move to the front of the line in God’s eyes
You move to the front of God’s line by humbling yourself that He will exalt you.
Describe where true and ultimate authority comes from
Ultimate authority comes from God because He gives it to you to serve His people
Show you where greatness comes from
Greatness is not taken, it is given by the one who created and ordered all things
We need to learn that God’s ways supersede the natural realm where we strive in our human existence.
By walking in the Spirit and yielding to His ways, “The Humble Become Lord.”
Your greatness is determined by your service to God and to others.
Your humility is key to your exaltation.
Your thoughts and your ways will only achieve momentary success in the world.
His thoughts and His Ways will cause you to achieve success not only now but into the world to come.
