Exodus 1:12-17
I. The Fifth Commandment (Exodus 20:12)
A. What the Commandment Says
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
B. What the Commandment Means
Mark 7:9-13 (NASB95)
9 He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition.
10 “For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, is to be put to death’;
11 but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),’
12 you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother;
13 thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”
Ephesians 6:1-3 (NASB95)
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
2 Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise),
3 so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth.
C. How to Apply the Commandment
- Children living at home
- Adults on their own
- Caring for elderly parents - nursing home?
- Honoring the memory of parents. Even if they did not live honorably.
II. The Sixth Commandment (Exodus 20:13)
A. What the Commandment Says
13 “You shall not murder.
B. What the Commandment Means
Matthew 5:21-24 (NASB95)
21 “You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not commit murder’ and ‘Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.’
22 “But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, ‘You good-for-nothing,’ shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.
23 “Therefore if you are presenting your offering at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,
24 leave your offering there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and present your offering.

- Premeditated murder
- Suicide
- Abortion
- Accessory to murder
- Hating someone
III. The Seventh Commandment (Exodus 20:14)
A. What the Commandment Says
14 “You shall not commit adultery.
B. What the Commandment Means
Matthew 5:27-32 (NASB95)
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’;
28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
29 “If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.
30 “If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.
31 “It was said, ‘Whoever sends his wife away, let him give her a certificate of divorce’;
32 but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
C. How to Apply the Commandment
- Any sexual activity outside of legitimate marriage...
- Homosexuality
- Rape
- Prostitution
- Fornication
- Divorce and remarriage
- Mental sex outside of legitimate marriage
IV. The Eighth Commandment (Exodus 20:15)
A. What the Commandment Says
15 “You shall not steal.
B. What the Commandment Means
Taking something of value that belongs to someone else. All thing belong to God - Psalm 24:1 The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains, The world, and those who dwell in it. Stealing from another human is stealing from God.
C. How to Apply the Commandment
- Copying music, movies, or software without permission
- Not working as hard as you can for the Lord on the job.
- Making personl calls on company time (unlesss permitted)
- Taking pens, or other office supplies from employers.
- Not paying back debts
- Not paying or cheating on taxes.
- Kidnapping
V. The Nineth Commandment (Exodus 20:16)
A. What the Commandment Says
16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
B. What the Commandment Means
Deuteronomy 19:16-21 (NASB95)
16 “If a malicious witness rises up against a man to accuse him of wrongdoing,
17 then both the men who have the dispute shall stand before the Lord, before the priests and the judges who will be in office in those days.
18 “The judges shall investigate thoroughly, and if the witness is a false witness and he has accused his brother falsely,
19 then you shall do to him just as he had intended to do to his brother. Thus you shall purge the evil from among you.
20 “The rest will hear and be afraid, and will never again do such an evil thing among you.
21 “Thus you shall not show pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
C. How to Apply the Commandment
- Lying in court
- “How are you today?” “Good!”
- White lies
- Lies to protect someone – just remain silent (basis of 5th amentdment)
- Slander
- Rumors
- Assigning motives
- making a promise and then breaking it.
VI. The Tenth Commandment (Exodus 20:17)

17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

- Contentment - 1 Timothy 6:6 But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment.
Matthew 19:16-22 (NASB95)
16 And someone came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may obtain eternal life?”
17 And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.”
18 Then he said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, “You shall not commit murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness;
19 Honor your father and mother; and You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
20 The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?”
21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
22 But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.
Romans 7:6-14 (NASB95)
6 But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.
7 What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, “You shall not covet.”
8 But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead.
9 I was once alive apart from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive and I died;
10 and this commandment, which was to result in life, proved to result in death for me;
11 for sin, taking an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me.
12 So then, the Law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.
13 Therefore did that which is good become a cause of death for me? May it never be! Rather it was sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin by effecting my death through that which is good, so that through the commandment sin would become utterly sinful.
14 For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin.
Galatians 3:22-24 (NASB95)
22 But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed.
24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.
Romans 13:8-10 (NASB95)
8 Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.
9 For this, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
