Hoshea was also Joshua’s original name (Num. 13:8, 16). Nothing is known of Hosea’s family background except that he was a son of Beeri

Hoshea prophesied for quite some time, from 785 to 725 B.C. The Book of Hosea was likely written between 755 and 725 B.C.

Hosea’s ministry extended for a number of decades in the second half of the eighth century B.C. Four kings of Judah (Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah) reigned when Hosea prophesied. Only one king of the north (Jeroboam II), is mentioned though Hosea’s message was directed primarily to the Northern Kingdom.

After king Solomon the Kingdom was divided because He began to worship other gods.
1 Kings 11:9–10 ESV
And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods. But he did not keep what the Lord commanded.
Angry: to be angry v. — to be or become angry and feel aversion and antipathy for something.
Aversion: a strong dislike or disinclination
1 Kings 11:11–12 ESV
Therefore the Lord said to Solomon, “Since this has been your practice and you have not kept my covenant and my statutes that I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom from you and will give it to your servant. Yet for the sake of David your father I will not do it in your days, but I will tear it out of the hand of your son.
Exodus 20:5 ESV
You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,
Notice that God is jealous when someone gives to another something that rightly belongs to Him.
God is speaking of people making idols and bowing down and worshiping those idols instead of giving God the worship that belongs to Him alone. God is possessive of the worship and service that belong to Him. It is a sin (as God points out in this commandment) to worship or serve anything other than God.
It is a sin when we desire, or we are envious, or we are jealous of someone because he has something that we do not have. It is a different use of the word “jealous” when God says He is jealous. What He is jealous of belongs to Him; worship and service belong to Him alone, and are to be given to Him alone.
Exodus 6:7 ESV
I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.
Leviticus 26:45 ESV
But I will for their sake remember the covenant with their forefathers, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God: I am the Lord.”
Ezekiel 14:11 ESV
that the house of Israel may no more go astray from me, nor defile themselves anymore with all their transgressions, but that they may be my people and I may be their God, declares the Lord God.”
Zechariah 8:8 ESV
and I will bring them to dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in faithfulness and in righteousness.”
2 Corinthians 6:16 ESV
What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Jeremiah 30:22 ESV
And you shall be my people, and I will be your God.”
Jeremiah 32:38 ESV
And they shall be my people, and I will be their God.
Revelation 21:3 ESV
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.
This is a theme in the Bible:
“They will be his people, and God will be their God.”
I’m included!
God is actively pursing a relationship with me!
He wants to be my God!
He wants me to trust in Him with all of my heart.
God is not always pleased with my decisions!
Hosea 1:1 ESV
The word of the Lord that came to Hosea, the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.
Hosea 1:2 ESV
When the Lord first spoke through Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea, “Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom and have children of whoredom, for the land commits great whoredom by forsaking the Lord.”
God wanted to paint a picture !
When the Lord first spoke.....
“Go take to yourself a wife of whoredom”
Whoredom: to act unfaithfully ⇔ prostitute v. — to act unfaithfully or treacherously, conceived of as living like a prostitute.
Look at the contrast
Go marry an unfaithfully women....
Go have children of unfaithfulness
Go intentionally into the situation
Because the land (Israel)
Is unfaithful to me… Because they have forsaken me.
God considered himself a husband to Isreal
Jeremiah 2:1–2 ESV
The word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says the Lord, “I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.
Jeremiah 31:32 ESV
not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord.
God is Active and Intentional!
God can be angry and disappointed!
Because He is Jealous over what is HIS!
