Intro:

Today I am celebrating the my one year anniversary with Katie.  We have had a very difficult year, with a death in the family, broken cars, and a flooded apartment.  I spent some time reflecting on my life and how I arrived here and with such a wonderful woman.  I was thankful to the Lord and began thinking about when I was in Junior High.  I know Junior High is where you begin to figure some things out, clicks begin to form and passions are ignited.

A 13 year old has lived 4,745 days.

Today, we are going to be looking at Matthew 20:20-28 and we will focus on how to serve others as we Live in the Kingdom by not being a Momma's Boy (or Daddy's Girl).

Naturally, I will be able to tell you more about momma's boys than daddy's girls but I will try.  A daddy's girl is a girl not a woman.  She gets what she wants, has her dad wrapped around her finger.  She loves her dad and her dad thinks the world of her.  She knows she is safe with her dad.  She lets her dad fight fights for her, get her out of trouble and take care of as many problems as possible.

Now for a little about Momma's boys.  They are boys, not men.  They do not stand up for themselves or seek after their own goals.  They lean on their mother and let her fight their battles.  To illustrate this let me tell you about one of my friends growing up.

  1. A mother's request for greatness (20.20-24)
    1. Mom's question (20-21)
      1. She was probably egged on by her sons
      2. This is done in reference to the promise of Matt 19:28, The disciples thought it was them.
      3. Their request was selfish and it was an attempt to gain power over other people
    2. Jesus' answer
      1. The cup
        1. This referenced God's wrath and suffering (James killed with the sword, John unkn) #. It meant sticking with something till the end
      2. He assures them they will suffer but he does not give a position of promise to them
    3. The disciples reaction
      1. They had all been there, wondering who would be the greatest and Jesus just let the wind out of their sails! #. The mandate for greatness (20:25-28)
    4. Kingdom living is about serving not being served  (25-27)
      1. The world measures greatness by your power over people.  Jesus views greatness in the way you affect other people by showing them the love of Christ.
      2. Greatness is in being a servant
        1. A servant is his own person, he may only have the clothes on his back but he is free
      3. Being first is being a slave
        1. A slave is the personal property of someone else
    5. Jesus is our supreme example of serving, by giving of his life (27-28)
      1. Jesus is first because he became obedient unto death #. Ransom is the price to buy a slaves freedom, it was the price paid for prisoners of war
  2. Kingdom living is sacrificial and servant Living
    1. Jesus set the example for us
      1. He paid our ransom, freeing us from being slaves to sin
        1. His example shows us people will only believe when we sacrifice our lives for others
        2. Kingdom living and serving others is more than just picking up chairs after church, serving is about spending your life so others might believe.
      2. He guarantees suffering
        1. Serving will require pain, it will cost you a very high price #. It costs so much because of what price was paid, Jesus!
        2. It costs so much because hell is real, eternity is forever, and people matter to God
      3. He does not guarantee success
        1. The world measures success by the numbers and length, the more you have and the longer you have it the more successful you are #. Jesus does not guarantee you a long life or that you will win more people to Jesus than Billy Graham, but he does guarantee ETERNAL LIFE, life with him.
    2. Church, school, sport and activities

Conclusion: Are you going to be a momma's boy or a daddy's girl?  Are you going to let them live for the name of Christ and hope when you die they are asking Jesus to let you sit with him?  You have lived over 4,000 days, it is time for you to begin making your own decisions and living your own life.  It is time for you to yield your life to Christ, get baptized and get involved in church.  If you have done those things then it is time for you to stop standing on the sidelines, get in the game, and start serving others so they may know Jesus Christ.
