Satan: What can he do?

1 Thessalonians 2:18

A.  SATAN’S POWER

“Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.”

1.      Can stop you from accomplishing your goals

“We would have”

“hindered” means ‘cut off’ or ‘stopped.’  It was a term used by the highway department of Roman times to signify roads that had been made impassable.

2.      He can keep you in bondage. Luke 13:10-17

3.      He can enter you, even if you go to church every day of your life.

Luke 22:3 “Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the twelve.”

4.      Satan can cause you to turn your back on God, even if you are saved.

Luke 22:31-32  “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat.  But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail.  And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

5.      Satan can cause you to lie to the Holy Spirit.

Acts 5:3  Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?”

6.      Satan can pretend to be God.

2 Thessalonians 2:9  “The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders.”

  1. SATAN’S PURPOSE: Why is he here?

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10)

Divide church into three groups.  Each group is to repeat a one of the words when I point to them.

His purpose is best understood with a close examination of his name or names.

Satan and Devil both mean “Adversary.”  They are used 116 times in the Bible.

            1. Abaddo or Apollyon (Revelation 9:11)

11They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon.

PURPOSE:  He wants to destroy you.  He has come to steal, kill and destroy.

       2.  God of this age (2 Corinthians 4:4)

4The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

PURPOSE: He wants to blind you.  He has come to steal, kill and destroy.

            3.  Prince of demons (Matthew 12:24)

24But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”

PURPOSE: He wants to control you.  He has come to steal, kill and destroy.

            4.  Ruler of the kingdom of air (Ephesians 2:2)

2in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

PURPOSE: He wants to work in you.  He has come to steal, kill and destroy.

            5.  Ruler of darkness (Ephesians 6:12)

12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

PURPOSE: He wants to fight you.  He has come to steal, kill and destroy.

            6.  Tempter Matthew 4:3(NIV)

3The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

PURPOSE:  He wants to tempt you.  He has come to steal, kill and destroy.

            7.  Evil One  (Matthew 13:19)

19When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path.

PURPOSE:  He wants to snatch God’s Word from you.  He has come to steal, kill and destroy.

            8.  Belial  (2 Corinthians 6:15)

15What harmony is there between Christ and Belial£? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?

BELIAL (Bee' lih uhl) The transliteration of a Hebrew common noun meaning, “useless” or “worthless.” KJV interprets it as a proper name sixteen times, but modern translations translate it as a common noun, “worthless” or “wicked.” It is a term of derision (Deut. 13:13). In Nahum 1:15, where the King James Version translates it as “the wicked,” Belial appears to be the name of some specific malevolent power.

In the New Testament the word occurs one time (2 Cor. 6:15). There Paul the apostle declared the mutual irreconcilability of Christ and Belial, who thus appears to be equated with Satan.

PURPOSE:  He wants to make you worthless.  He has come to steal, kill and destroy.

            9.  Beelzebub  Matthew 12:24(NIV)

24But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.”

Beelzebub was the “lord of the flies,” or “lord of the dung.”

PURPOSE:  He wants you to become dung.  He has come to steal, kill and destroy.

            10.  Murderer from the beginning and a liar and the father of lies. (John 8:44)

44You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

PURPOSE:  He wants to kill you, and lie to you.  He has come to steal, kill and destroy.

            11.  A Roaring Lion  (1 Peter 5:8)

8Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

PURPOSE:  He wants to devour you.  He has come to steal, kill and destroy.
