Ephesians 1:3-6
In Christ, we have redemption.
We have forgiveness.
Not because of our works, but because of His grace.
There are two types of grace I want to examine today, both which have to deal with our holiness and both are examined in Ephesians.
Justifying Grace
Sanctifying Grace
Justifying Grace
We have a problem when presume upon our works.
I am saved becasue of.......
Sometimes this is being a good person.
Doing the right things.
Sometimes it’s that I accepted Him.
v.13
We did believe in Him.
In that way we are responsible.
2:1-9
We are saved by grace, not by our works.
If you contributed to your salvation, you cannot honestly sing the song amazing grace.
“You contribute nothing to your salvation except the sin that made it necessary.”
― Jonathan Edwards
For justification must rest on nothing more than His grace, His grace is what brings us to faith.
Why we need grace
We at the core of our being, detest the things of God.
No one, seeks after God, all have become filthy.
If God didn’t seek after you…you would never desire Him, never love Him.
We love Him only because He first loved us, and made His face to shine upon us.
Showed us grace.
When we try to add to the grace of God, we lose it
Galatians 5:3-4
If we believe we are justified by our actions.
You are then severed from grace.
If you have faith, you will have works.
But your works don’t save you, only the grace of God saves you.
What is our reaction to the grace that we have been given?
How do we respond?
2 ways:
People believe they are great, because they are chosen by God.
They are God’s blessing to the people.
We are humble, gracious people.
Who love much because of the love we have been given.
Who forgive much becasue we have been forgiven.
Who are gracious becasue God has shown us grace.
Ephesians 3:7-9
Sanctifying Grace
Justifying grace makes you holy and righteous in the eyes of God.
Sanctifying grace, is God calling you to do something, then giving you the strength to do it.
When God says stop lying, and gives you the grace to stop lying.
v.7
God has called Paul to minister to the gentiles.
Then God gave Paul the grace, or the ability to minister to the gentiles.
v.8-9
I hope you see how Paul recognizes his unworthiness to be a minister.
He recognizes that he is unworthy; a wretch.
Yet called by God and given grace to accomplish that task.
Our Mindset as Heirs of Grace
This is the mindset that we should have as heirs of grace.
Justifying grace shows us how much we truly depend on God for salvation.
This should humble us.
Sanctifying grace shows us how much we need God for the everyday tasks.
Whether that is our battle with sin.
To stop lying, stop gossiping, stop lusting after women, to be unshackled from our addictions.
Or doing the jobs as a member of the body of christ that He is calling you to.
Preaching, teaching, working with kids, telling the person on the street that God loves them.
All of these tasks require grace.
That should humble us, and make us loving people who now follow God, desiring to put off sin, and be loving to others.
Do You?
Do you recognize that you are a wretch saved by grace, or do you think your a pretty good person, who just needed a little help from Jesus?
If the latter, you might want to examine your salvation.
You still have a long ways to grow.
Do you recognize that God will give you strength to change?
You are not to stay in your sins.
Anytime in scripture where God speaks of forgiveness.
He first speaks of repentance.
We must repent, and change.
Do you see that you are to be gracious?
Just as you have been given undeserved favor, you are to give undeserved favor.
