What does God want them to know? We are to discern/judge, but we are not to be hypocrites or tearing down

Have you ever had someone TWIST your Words? You said ONE things and what they HEARD was something completely different.
“How did that happen???” I didn’t say what you think I said....text messages don’t help…inflection, body language, tone of voice is missing....text of “Son, come home”
I am not really asking you…I am telling you SON COME HOME…or it can be read harshly and it was meant softly
Yeah, I am a part of a family, I have friends....this happens
Or maybe you had this happen to you on the last youth group of your career, your senior youth group when the seniors were going around encouraging one another.
It is Sarah’s turn and a man named Pete happened to say to Sarah the thing I like about you is that your are QUIET...
How did Sarah respond to that, gee thanks! I have always wanted to be QUIET…what does that mean? Uninteresting? Non-important?....then Pete proceeded to HURT the other girls in the youth group by saying what I am trying to say is compared to the other girls in the YOUTH GROUP who were really loud and always talking....it was nice to be around someone who didn’t dominate the conversation.....
What I was really trying to say to Sarah is that she is PEACEFUL to be around.

What’s the point of me bringing this up? What am I driving at?
The reason I bring this up is because I want to talk about the most TWISTED SCRIPTURE by those OUTSIDE of the church and inside too.
It is a verse they love to quote
What is that verse? Anyone want to guess???
JUDGE NOT LEAST YOU BE JUDGED
Come on Christian you are not to JUDGE
GOOD CHRISTIANS DON’T JUDGE
Some people even wear shirts that say “Only God can judge me” implying Christians you can’t judge me and it is often wore by someone who lives a good life, right, no nefarious life.
I love a meme that went around when a celebrity wore this shirt who lives a non-rightoues life and someone said....THAT SHOULD SCARE YOU
That should SCARE anyone who is not made CLEAN by the BLOOD of LAMB of JESUS
But the question is it TRUE that CHRISTIANS are not JUDGE???
Let’s PAUSE....what does it mean to To judge something? is evaluate something to discern something.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing
We do this all the time with a lot of things we PURCHASE
We look at the REVIEWS on AMAZON on GOOGLE.
What are people saying
When you do that you are JUDGING the worth of something
But that is THINGS…it is ok to JUDGE things, but not people!!
We are in a non-judgement American
When you are at a playground and there is creepy and shady character there who is saying innapproiate things to the children we say that is fine because we are not going to JUDGE???
Or when people who run school systems think it is ok to teach all types of sex educations to kindergardeners?… that’s ok
Or when someone FLIRTS or HITS on your SPOUSE of BOYFRIEND or GIRLFRIEND that’s ok…we are not going to JUDGE them???
No we want those at the play ground to be safe people and unsafe people not to be there
We want people who run our school systems to NOT teach SEX EDUCATION…they are very bad at it
We want people not to hit on our SPOUSE
But to do that we have to judge and evaluate them
The reality is our culture is GOOD in a BAD WAY at this....our culture that says “Don’t JUDGE!!” has a thing called “CANCEL CUTLURE” that JUDGES everyone with a JUDGEMENT STRONGER THAN GOD’S JUDGEMENT…there is no ROOM for GRACE
WE are not going there today

What does God have to say about us JUDGING others? We are going to go to the passage that PEOPEL use for CHRISTIANS are not to JUDGE
Matthew 7:1 ESV
“Judge not, that you be not judged.
See it says it “Don’t judge” case closed
that is taking a verse out of context
I like that verse there and I am going to use it
It also says a couple verses later
Matthew 7:15–18 ESV
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.
You recognize them when you DISCERN/JUDGE their fruit.
So now we are to be confused
Jesus says “Don’t judge Matt 7:1” then in Matt 7:15-18 do judge
Help me out here!!
To help us understand lets look at the context…in the sermon on the mount in chapter 6 right before chapter 7 where we are at today…Jesus addresses 3 religious practices that religious people
What three practices are those?
Giving
Prayer
Fasting
What Jesus was saying with this practices you were putting the spotlight on yourself
Look how much I give, Look at my prayers, look at my fasting
But the spotlight is not to be on you, but on GOD
JESUS SAYS YOU ARE BEING HYPOCRITICAL…and your reward is a human one not a God reward.
Hypocrite is pretending to be something that you are not…you are pretending to Godly but you are not.
Matthew 7:1–5 ESV
“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
He is talking to the religious leaders who love to judge, but their heart was far from God...
Jesus said the measurement you use will be measured to you
-This is not what they wanted or we want....we want a TEASPOON of JUDGEMENT to US and a CUP or 10 CUPS of judgement to them.
Jesus said you are POINTING out there flaws but you, you have a WOOD PLANK IN YOUR EYE
You have all this stuff to take care of and yet you come down on them???
Romans 2:1–4 ESV
Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?
I have seen a great correlation to someones judging to someone’s sin
You shouldn’t look at pornography, you should not lie, you shouldn’t talk that way, that’s not the way ....the more adament they are about you not doing it is almost always tied to the likely hood of them struggling with the sin they are condemming you for.
Another time it happens is a famous scripture of the women caught in adultery
John 8:1–11 ESV
but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst they said to him, “Teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. Now in the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” And once more he bent down and wrote on the ground. But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She said, “No one, Lord.” And Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”
What Jesus is a saying we are not to be HYPOCRITICAL in OUR JUDGING.
You say don’t do this, but you do it.
JUDGE YOURSELF
YOurself right with GOd…not perfect
TO GOD’S STANDARD, NOT YOURS
THEN WE YOU HAVE YOURSELF SQUARED AWAY, WALKING WITH GOD THEN YOU HAVE THE AUTHORITY, right standing to make a GODLY JUDGEMENT
You will have the HEART and TRUTH of GOD in YOUR HEART and YOUR HEAD
When you see someone acting out of line with GOD’S standard not ours we have a responsiblity to speak up…not in HAMMER way, but wit the heart of GOD..
You will be able to to judge correctly
John 7:24 ESV
Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”
What are the two main purposes in judging?
Protection (from false doctrine)
Judge to help our brother or sister who has wandered away
What you are to do is help them? You judge they are wandering away
WE ARE OUR BROTHERS KEEPER
James 5:19–20 ESV
My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
they only way we know they are wandering if we make a judgement, discern them.
evaluate them
Galatians 6:1–2 ESV
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
The only way we know they are wandering is by JUDGING, EVALUATING THEM
Luke 17:3–4 ESV
Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”
Our judging we do with the heart of God to HELP THE WANDER and PROTECT OURSELVES FROM LIES
BUT WHAT IF THEY ARE UNREPENTANT…that’s when church discipline takes place.
Matthew 18:15–20 ESV
“If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
PAUL get’s angry at the CHURCH of CORINTH because they were not speaking up against unrepentive sin
you have a responsibility and authority to help your BROTHERS and SISTERS out and to not JUDGE is HURTING OTHERS.
1 Corinthians 5:1–2 ESV
It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife. And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.
REMOVE the person who is doing sexually pervertted things.
1 Corinthians 5:9–13 ESV
I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”

- There is difference between someone struggling in sin and outward rebellion

KEEPING THAT PERSON AROUND AFFECTS EVERYONE
1 Corinthians 5:6 ESV
Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?
Jesus says
We are not just hypocritically, work on you
THEN WE ARE TO JUDGE FOR PROTECTION AGAINST LIES
AND TO BE OUR BROTHERS KEEP TO HELP THEM WALK IN THE FAITH
WE ARE NOT TO JUDGE THOSE OUTSIDE THE FAITH
We are to invoke church discipline if there unrepentance

Ultimate judgement paid by Jesus
Mercy triumphs over judgement
James 2:13 ESV
For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
