Among those who fish, exaggeration seems to be common.
For some, the big fish gets a little longer each time the story is told.
Some fishermen seem to compete for the greatest stories, 1 uping each other.
In a context like this, the temptation to make the story a little more exciting is often too hard to ignore.
It would be easy for skeptics to write of these stories as purely exaggeration of fishermen but we will see this is not your typical fish story.

John 1:35–42 (ESV)
The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.
--
Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, “What are you seeking?”
And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?”
He said to them, “Come and you will see.”
--
So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.
One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother.
--
He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ).
He brought him to Jesus.
Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John.
You shall be called Cephas” (which means Peter).

The Second Invitation
Matthew 4:18–22 (HCSB)
As He was walking along the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon, who was called Peter, and his brother Andrew.
They were casting a net into the sea, since they were fishermen.
“Follow Me,” He told them, “and I will make you fish for people!” Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.
--
Going on from there, He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.
They were in a boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and He called them.
Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed Him.

The Third Call
Luke 5:1–3 (ESV)
On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, and he saw two boats by the lake,

but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.
Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land.
And he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
