INTRO
Honestly, I really struggled with this when starting our church. Not because I didn’t believe we should not go to church but because I was unsure if the decision to be IN a church, a physical building, was the right decision. I questioned deeply of why be inside or even strive to have a building in the future. Questions remained; Can we still accomplish our mission as Christians without a building? What is the benefit? What is the risk? Is it wrong to have a building? Why go to church? Is that a dumb question? What does the bible say? What is the church? What does the word church mean? I thought deeply about these things and today I would like to share with all of you what I have found. Not only what I found but what I also believe to be true. My hope is not to persuade you, well, maybe, hahaha, it’s not that I want to persuade you but because it’s sometimes difficult to understand your own motives. My focus is not persuasion but hopefully revealing truth. And the truth is powerful.

Church Defined
The word “Church” The oxford dictionary defines the word Church as.
Church
a building used for public Christian worship.
Or
a particular Christian organization, typically one with its own clergy, buildings, and distinctive doctrines.
That makes sense. It’s how we use the word Church for most everyday conversations. But let’s see what history and the bible have to say.
The New Testament word for “church” is ekklēsia, which means “the called out ones.” ¿Sounds familiar? La palabra "iglesia" viene del latín ecclesia y este del griego, ekklēsia.
In classical Greek, the term was used almost exclusively for political gatherings. In particular, in Athens the word signified the assembling of the citizens for the purpose of conducting the affairs of the polis. Moreover, ekklēsia referred only to the actual meeting, not to the citizens themselves. When the people were not assembled, they were not considered to be the ekklēsia.
The first time we find the term ekklēsia used in a religious sense, as far as I know, is in the Septuagint (The Septuagint is the earliest translation of the Bible from Hebrew into Greek), The septuagint uses the word in a religious sense about one hundred times. We also find it in Acts (23 times) and the Pauline writings (46 times). It is found twenty times in Revelation and only in isolated instances in James and Hebrews.
It’s here, in the New Testament, where ekklēsia is used in three different ways;
Ekklēsia (Iglesia)
1. a local assembly of those who profess faith in and allegiance to Christ
2. Designates the universal church (Acts 8:3; 9:31; 1 Cor. 12:28; 15:9; especially in the later Pauline letters, Eph. 1:22–23; Col. 1:18)
3. is God’s congregation (1 Cor. 1:2; 2 Cor. 1:1; etc.)
Can you see it? In biblical terms, the word church is not a building or a religion. It’s the assembly of God, the universal church, Gods congregation.
As a christian we don’t attend church, we ARE THE CHURCH! We don’t “go” to church we bring the church to the building. We are “the called out ones”. God has called us to be different from the world.
God has called the church to be separate from sin 1 Peter 1:16
to embrace fellowship with other believers Acts 2:42
to be a light to the world Matthew 5:14
The significance of the Church
What does this mean?
It means it’s not about you and your wants! To be worshippers of God. You are called to worship and part of that includes spending time with other believers.
Worship isn’t a product to consume but the purpose in itself. Worship isn’t only praising God through song.
Romans 12:1-2
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
So within the context of God’s mercy, Christ’s death on the cross, we are to lay down our lives/the desires of our flesh as a sacrifice to God. We are not be like this world but have transformed minds that can recognized God’s will- his good, pleasing, and perfect will.
It’s not about asking “what’s in it for me?” It’s about gathering with other believers and fulfilling our purpose of glorifying and enjoying God.
Hebrews 10:25
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
You need to be part of a community of people that you become intimately acquainted with that you’re personally involved with, that you minister to, that you minister with, that you love and they are loved by you, you use your gifts/talents, and you fulfill one another.
It means, as a christian, you come here not merely to receive but to demonstrate God’s love by serving and having fellowship with one another.
Another point is...
It’s difficult to be a united church without fellowship. Just before Jesus was arrested he prayed. And in that prayer he prayed for all believers, you and I, to be united.
John 17:23
“I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”
If we are going to successfully reach this community, the city of bellflower, and show them the love of God, we must be united. We must be in fellowship with one another. We must be able to discern the differences between what is holy and sacred and what is not. We must be able to differentiate between political beliefs, religious beliefs, traditions, and and what the truth of the bible says.
Why else do you gather and have church on Sundays?
A second reason is
It is for the sake of those not yet in the room
The truth is, not all who come to our church will be Christians and HOPEFULLY NOT! They won’t be serving but rather consuming and that’s ok and maybe that’s where you are right now. We have church on Sundays for new people to come who are looking for the truth. Who desire to understand christianity. It’s a place where EVERYBODY, regardless of their background, can hear and experience the news of Christ’s love for them.
Our desire is that those who come find the truth. That they find hope, peace, kindness, joy, strength, courage, wisdom, and the love of God. And once that is found, and I mean TRULY found, it is difficult to not want to share it with others.
God’s grace has been freely given to you and in response we freely we give and serve one another.
Conclusion
I believe the church plays a significant role in our communities and our country. It’s through the transformation of our minds with the power of the holy spirit that we are able to break the chains of sin. You can give to the poor, you can house the homeless, you can give all the necessities to a drug addict, but UNLESS there is a transformation that takes place from within them, within their soul and mind, those goods and services go fruitless. This doesn’t mean we don’t do those things. We are called to help the poor, the widowed, and those enslaved to sin but as the church, as the body of Christ our primary role is salvation. The transformational power of Christ’s death and resurrection.
Imagine a place you could go where the people served one another not out of duty, not because they were forced to, but because they desired to. Imagine a place where people loved one another and cared for one another simply because they see others as inherently valuable, children of God. A place where you can come hear the truth even if it hurts you temporarily. A place where people build each other up to become better, to be as they were created to be in the eyes of God. A place where people can mourn together and rejoice together. Where the love of God is heard, felt, and seen.

And while that’s sad, you can’t build the future of the church on passionless, disengaged people. Nor can you build it on consumers.
The future will be built on Christians who want to serve, share and engage the mission of the local church.
So if you’re looking for the perfect church, you won’t find. And if you do, as soon as you become part of it it will no longer be perfect. We are building the church not trying to create some false utopian reality.
How to find such a place: You need a place where the word of God is honored and Christ is exalted. And where leaders are trust worthy.
There are podcasts, youtube, facebook and much more on the internet. But you’ll have a hard time growing without the support, wisdom, and accountability that comes with fellowship.
You want to grow closer to God? You want to improve your life? Go to church. And by improve I don’t mean “less suffering”. You will suffer. In fact, Jesus says the world will hate you.
John 15:18-19
18 “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19 If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.
So what I mean by “improve is to be stronger; mentally, emotionally, spiritually to be able to face the pain, evils, demons of this world and come out victorious standing on the rock of our salvation, Gods deliverance.

Honestamente, luché con esto cuando comencamos nuestra iglesia. No porque no creia que no deberíamos ir a la iglesia, sino porque no estaba seguro de si la decisión de estar EN una iglesia, un edificio físico, era la decisión correcta. Me pregunte profundamente por qué estar adentro o incluso esforzarnos por tener un edificio en el futuro. Tenia preguntas como; ¿Podemos todavía cumplir nuestra misión como cristianos sin un edificio? ¿Cuál es el beneficio? ¿Cual es el riesgo? ¿Está mal tener un edificio? ¿Por qué ir a la iglesia? ¿Es una pregunta tonta? ¿Qué dice la biblia? ¿Qué es la iglesia? ¿Qué significa la palabra iglesia?
Reflexioné profundamente sobre estas cosas y hoy me gustaría compartir con todos ustedes lo que he encontrado. No solo lo que encontré, sino también lo que creo que es verdad. Mi esperanza no es persuadirte, bueno, tal vez, jajaja, no es que quiera persuadirte sino porque a veces es difícil entender tus propios motivos. Mi enfoque no es la persuasión, sino con suerte, revelar la verdad. Y la verdad es poderosa.

El diccionario de Oxford define la palabra Iglesia como.
Iglesia
un edificio utilizado para el culto cristiano público.
O
una organización cristiana particular, típicamente una con su propio clero, edificios y doctrinas distintivas.
Eso tiene sentido. Así es como usamos la palabra Iglesia en la mayoría de las conversaciones. Pero veamos qué tiene que decir la historia y la biblia.
La palabra del Nuevo Testamento para “iglesia” es ekklesia ¿Suena familiar? La palabra "iglesia" viene del latín ecclesia y este del griego, ekklesia.
Ekklesia
Proviene de ek, que significa "salir de hacia a" y kaleo, que significa "llamar", y tiene que ver con un grupo de personas llamadas de un lugar a otro. Es una asamblea o una congregación.
En griego clásico, el término se usaba casi exclusivamente para reuniones políticas. En particular, en Atenas la palabra significaba la reunión de los ciudadanos con el fin de llevar a cabo los asuntos de la polis. Además, ekklēsia se refería únicamente a la reunión en sí, no a los propios ciudadanos. Cuando el pueblo no estaba reunido, no se consideraba que fueran la ekklēsia.
La primera vez que encontramos el término ekklēsia usado en un sentido religioso, que yo sepa, es en la Septuaginta (La Septuaginta es la primera traducción de la Biblia del hebreo al griego). La Septuaginta usa la palabra en un sentido religioso alrededor de cien veces. También lo encontramos en Hechos (23 veces) y en los escritos paulinos (46 veces). Se encuentra veinte veces en Apocalipsis y solo en casos aislados en Santiago y Hebreos.
Es aquí, en el Nuevo Testamento, ekklēsia se usa de tres maneras diferentes;

¿Puedes verlo? En términos bíblicos, la palabra iglesia no es un edificio o una religión. Es la asamblea de Dios, la iglesia universal, la congregación de Dios.
Como cristianos no asistimos a la iglesia, ¡SOMOS LA IGLESIA! No “vamos” a la iglesia, llevamos la iglesia al edificio. Somos “la asamblea separada”. Dios nos ha llamado a ser diferentes del mundo.

¿Qué significa esto?
¡Significa que no se trata de ti y tus deseos! Para ser adoradores de Dios estás llamado a adorar y parte de eso incluye pasar tiempo con otros creyentes.
La adoración no es un producto para consumir sino el propósito en sí mismo. La adoración no es solo alabar a Dios a través del canto.
Romanos 12:1-2
Así que, hermanos, os ruego por las misericordias de Dios, que presentéis vuestros cuerpos en sacrificio vivo, santo, agradable a Dios, que es vuestro culto racional. 2 No os conforméis a este siglo, sino transformaos por medio de la renovación de vuestro entendimiento, para que comprobéis cuál sea la buena voluntad de Dios, agradable y perfecta.
Entonces, dentro del contexto de la misericordia de Dios, por la muerte de Cristo en la cruz, debemos dar nuestras vidas/los deseos de nuestra carne como sacrificio a Dios. No somos como este mundo, pero tenemos mentes transformadas que pueden reconocer la voluntad de Dios: su voluntad buena, agradable y perfecta.
No se trata de preguntar "¿qué hay para mí?" Se trata de reunirnos con otros creyentes y cumplir nuestro propósito de glorificar y disfrutar a Dios.
Hebreos 10:23-25
23 Mantengamos firme, sin fluctuar, la profesión de nuestra esperanza, porque fiel es el que prometió. 24 Y considerémonos unos a otros para estimularnos al amor y a las buenas obras; 25 no dejando de congregarnos, como algunos tienen por costumbre, sino exhortándonos; y tanto más, cuanto veis que aquel día se acerca.
Necesitas ser parte de una comunidad de personas con las que te familiarizes íntimamente, con las que estás involucrado personalmente, a las que ministras, que amas y te aman, donde usas tus dones y talentos, y llevar las cargas de unos a los otros.
Significa que, como cristiano, vienes aquí no solo para recibir sino para demostrar el amor de Dios sirviendo y teniendo comunión unos con otros.
Otro punto es...
Es difícil ser una iglesia unida sin compañerismo. Justo antes de que arrestaran a Jesús, el oró. Y en esa oración pidió que todos los creyentes, tú y yo, estemos unidos.
Juan 17:20-23
Mas no ruego solamente por estos, sino también por los que han de creer en mí por la palabra de ellos, 21 para que todos sean uno; como tú, oh Padre, en mí, y yo en ti, que también ellos sean uno en nosotros; para que el mundo crea que tú me enviaste. 22 La gloria que me diste, yo les he dado, para que sean uno, así como nosotros somos uno. 23 Yo en ellos, y tú en mí, para que sean perfectos en unidad, para que el mundo conozca que tú me enviaste, y que los has amado a ellos como también a mí me has amado.
Si vamos a llegar con éxito a esta comunidad, la ciudad de bellflower, y mostrarles el amor de Dios, debemos estar unidos. Debemos estar en comunión unos con otros. Debemos ser capaces de discernir las diferencias entre lo que es santo y sagrado y lo que no lo es. Debemos ser capaces de diferenciar entre creencias políticas, creencias religiosas, tradiciones y lo que dice la verdad de la Biblia.
¿Por qué más te reúnes y tienes iglesia los domingos?
Una segunda razón es
Es por el bien de aquellos que aún no están aquí.
La verdad es que no todos los que vienen a nuestra iglesia serán cristianos y ¡ESPERAMOS QUE NO! No estarán sirviendo sino consumiendo y eso está bien y tal vez ahí es donde estás ahora. Tenemos iglesia los domingos para que venga gente nueva y que busquen la verdad. Que deseen comprender el cristianismo. Es un lugar donde TODOS, independientemente de su origen, pueden escuchar y experimentar la noticia del amor de Cristo por ellos.
Nuestro deseo es que los que vengan encuentren la verdad. Que encuentren esperanza, paz, bondad, alegría, fuerza, valor, sabiduría y el amor de Dios. Y una vez que se encuentra, y quiero decir VERDADERAMENTE encontrado, es difícil no querer compartirlo con otros.
La gracia de Dios te ha sido dada gratuitamente y en respuesta nos damos y nos servimos unos a otros.

Creo que la iglesia juega una parte importante en nuestras comunidades y nuestro país. Es a través de la transformación de nuestras mentes con el poder del espíritu santo que podemos romper las cadenas del pecado. Puedes dar a los pobres, puedes alojar a los desamparados, puedes dar todas las necesidades a un adicto a las drogas, pero A MENOS de que haiga una transformación que tenga lugar dentro de ellos, dentro de su alma y mente, esos bienes y servicios se vuelven infructuosos. Esto no significa que no hagamos esas cosas. Estamos llamados a ayudar a los pobres, los viudos y los esclavizados por el pecado, pero como iglesia, como cuerpo de Cristo, nuestra parte principal es la salvación. El poder transformador de la muerte y resurrección de Cristo.
Imagínense esto hermanos y hermanas....
Imagina un lugar al que pudieras ir donde la gente se sirviera unos a otros no por deber, no porque estuvieran obligados a hacerlo, sino porque así lo deseaban. Imagine un lugar donde las personas se amen y se cuiden simplemente porque ven a los demás como inherentemente valiosos, hijos de Dios. Un lugar donde puedes venir a escuchar la verdad aunque te duela temporalmente. Un lugar donde las personas se edifican unas a otras para ser mejores, para ser como fueron creadas a los ojos de Dios. Un lugar donde las personas pueden llorar juntas y regocijarse juntas. Donde el amor de Dios se escucha, se siente y se ve.
Nuestra misión como iglesia es: Existimos para amar y glorificar a Dios, amar a los demás y hacer discípulos a través de la adoración, la comunidad, y el servicio.
Y nuestra Visión es esta: La visión de Iglesia La Esperanza es crear una comunidad de creyentes auténticos y ser testigo de una ciudad transformada por la realidad del Evangelio que cambia la vida, a medida que las personas llegan a conocer a Jesús como su señor y Salvador.
“Lo mejor que la iglesia puede hacer por la sociedad es ser la iglesia como la quiso Jesús y como instruyeron sus apóstoles. Entonces el mundo verá cómo es una sociedad justa: una sociedad donde se respeta a las personas; las cargas se comparten; los talentos se usan y no se explotan; los pobres son valorados y los ricos son útiles. Entonces la iglesia se convertirá en el prototipo de lo que el mundo puede y, por la gracia de Dios, será”.
