The Missionary discourse.

Introduction:
Matthew 9:34-38.
Then Jesus sends the 12.
Tom Constable’s Expository Notes on the Bible The attitudes of the disciples 10:26–39 (cf. Luke 12:1–12)

This discourse (ch. 10) covers the whole period during which disciples of Jesus will minister, from Jesus’ day until the establishment of the messianic kingdom. It begins with the duty of the 12 Apostles but then broadens to include all subsequent disciples before the establishment of the kingdom.

Tom Constable’s Expository Notes on the Bible The attitudes of the disciples 10:26–39 (cf. Luke 12:1–12)

The scope of the Mission Discourse and the Sermon on the Mount are the same, the interim between Jesus’ first and second advents.

We have to remember that when the Apostles went out on this first missionary trip:
It was before Jesus’s death, burial, resurrection, and ascension.
It was before Pentecost and the permanent filling of the Holy Spirit.
The first trip focused on the message that the Kingdom of Heaven was at hand.
This is near and far prophecy like much of the Old Testament.
Matthew 10:16 AV
16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
Wolves eat sheep.
Paul started out as a wolf and was converted and became a sheep.
2 Corinthians 5:17 AV
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Be wise. Don’t just walk into a trap. Use your head and God given sense. listen to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
It it does not mean to be sneaky or conniving.
Harmless as doves. We should be peaceful.
Matthew 10:17 AV
17 But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;
This did not happen on the Apostles first missionary trip.
It did however happen to Paul, Stephen, and the other Apostles.
Synagogues= Jewish not gentile.
Matthew 10:18 AV
18 And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.
This did happen to Paul and the other Apostles as well.
But is also a picture of how things will be during the tribulation.
Matthew 10:19 AV
19 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.
No lazy preachers or teachers. Not an excuse.
This is during times of tribulation.
2 Timothy 2:15 AV
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
The 12 were not permanently filled with the Holy Spirit until Pentecost.
Matthew 10:20 AV
20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
A reference to the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 10:21 AV
21 And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.
This happens during this age in many countries in the world today.
Muslim and Hindus will kill or disown family members that convert to Christianity. also happens in China.
Will also be very prevalent during the tribulation.
Matthew 10:22 AV
22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
Endurance = perseverance.
Controversial. Not persevering for salvation but for demonstrating salvation.
saved by faith not by works.
To the end could mean several different things.
end of the age, end of the missionary trip,.
Very important to persevere or endure.
During the tribulation:
Matthew 24:13 AV
13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
Galatians 6:9 AV
9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
Church of Smyrna
Revelation 2:10 AV
10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.
Revelation 2:11 AV
11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
Church Pergamos
Revelation 2:17 AV
17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
Church of Thyatira
Revelation 2:25–26 AV
25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come. 26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
Church of Sardis
Revelation 3:5 AV
5 He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
Philadelphia
Revelation 3:12 AV
12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.
Laodicea
Revelation 3:21 AV
21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
Matthew 10:23 AV
23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.
This did not happen on this first trip.
It is difficult to understand when this event did happen of=r will happen.
Be come looks like a reference to the second coming.
Matthew 10:24 AV
24 The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.
If they reject the master they will also reject the servant.
Matthew 10:25 AV
25 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?
They attributed the works of Jesus to the devil, they will do the same to His disciples.
Jesus warns of all these bad things that are going to happen and then comforts the disciples and us by saying to fear not.
Jesus has us covered. He has got this.
Matthew 10:26 AV
26 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.
They are not going to get away with it.
We win!
Matthew 10:27 AV
27 What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.
Don’t hide the Gospel, proclaim it everywhere you go.
Matthew 10:28 AV
28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Matthew 10:29 AV
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
If God is concerned about sparrows? How much more does He care about you?
John 3:16.
Matthew 10:30 AV
30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
Matthew 10:31 AV
31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
Matthew 10:32 AV
32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
Peter is an example that you can be forgiven.
But, this is not a line we should cross.
Matthew 10:33 AV
33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
Matthew 10:34 AV
34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
The Gospel separates family and friends.
Sometimes even your old friend do not want to hang out with a Jesus freak.
AS mentioned earlier, muslims, Hindus and others will kill or reject family members that convert to Christianity.
Quote from Micah 7:6.
Matthew 10:35 AV
35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
Matthew 10:36 AV
36 And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.
Not new. prophesied under King Ahaz.
Matthew 10:37 AV
37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
Abraham and Isaac.
Matthew 10:38 AV
38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
This is not a little burden or ailment. This is are you willing to suffer crucifixion for the cause of Christ just like Jesus did?
This is life and death.
The cross is not a little thing.
Matthew 10:39 AV
39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
Eternal life. Either heaven or hell.
Matthew 10:40 AV
40 He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.
when a messenger is received it is the same as receiving the person that sent the message.
Matthew 10:41 AV
41 He that receiveth a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receiveth a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.
Matthew 10:42 AV
42 And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward.
Serve our fellow workers. Even the smallest act of kindness towards another disciple will not go un-noticed.
Application:
The Gospel has to continue. We are to be the messengers of the gospel.
It has never been promised to be easy.
Jesus clearly teaches that there will be much persecution suffered in His name and for His cause.
We and those that come after us have to persevere.
Think of what Jesus endured for you, then ask yourself the question, what will I endure for Jesus.
Matthew 28:19–20 AV
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Lost people are not coming into the church. We are going to have to go to them. We will have to change some of our traditions.
You may like our traditions but you are already saved.
Jesus and the Apostles traveled all over the known world to spread the gospel, we have to continue that tradition.
Sitting on a pew is not going to get it done. And it does not fulfill your obligation to God.
I will close by asking you the same question preacher Markus poised this morning “What are you doing for Jesus?”
