Judges 2:23

Theme: Defeat and Deliverance
Key Chapter: 2
Key Verse: Judges 21:25; 17:6
21 chapters, 618 verses, and 18,966 words
Grade level: 6.35
Author:
The Holy Spirit of God by inspiration (2 Tim 3:15) through possibly Samuel (1 Chron 12:15), Iddo the Seer (2 Chron 9:29), Shemaiah (2 Chron 12:15, Joshua (Joshua 18:9) or even anonymous Levites (Malachi 2:4-7; Ezra 7:6).
Quote - “The Bible believer should notice that whoever wrote Judges did not claim to be inspired. For that matter, neither did the authors of Ruth, Ecclesiastes, 1 & 2 Kings, or 1 & 2 Chronicles. This is noteworthy since one of the main objections brought against the KJB is that since its translators did not claim inspiration for their work, then it is not inspired.”(adapted)
Date Written: 1100 B.C.
Purpose:
To show that the outside threat by other nations is not as serious as the inside threat of moral depravity and idolatry; indeed, external threats always result from internal problems.
Outline:
I. Reason for the Judges. 1–2.
II. Rule of the Judges. 3–16.
III. Ruin of the Judges. 17–21.
The pattern laid down in chapter 2 is repeated 7 times:
Sin
Suffering
Supplication
Salvation

2:13 Scofield note concerning Ashtaroth.
Ashtaroth, plural of Ashtoreth (1 Ki. 11:5), were figures of Ashtoreth the Phœnician goddess (the Astarte of the Greeks), which were worshipped as idols during times of spiritual declension in Israel (Jud. 10:6; 1 Sam. 7:3, 4; 12:10; 31:10; 1 Ki. 11:5, 33; 2 Ki. 23:13). Jeremiah refers (44:18, 19) to Ashtoreth as the “queen of heaven.”
