The Light of the World

John 8:12–20 (KJV 1900)
12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.
14 Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.
15 Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.
16 And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.
17 It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.
18 I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.
19 Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.
20 These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.

Feast of Tabernacles

Exodus 23:14–19 KJV 1900
14 Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto me in the year. 15 Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread: (thou shalt eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou camest out from Egypt: and none shall appear before me empty:) 16 And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of thy labours, which thou hast sown in the field: and the feast of ingathering, which is in the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in thy labours out of the field. 17 Three times in the year all thy males shall appear before the Lord God. 18 Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the fat of my sacrifice remain until the morning. 19 The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the Lord thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother’s milk.
During the Feast of Tabernacles large crowds would gather nightly in what was called the court of the women. Only men could go and make sacrifices at the temple, so this area was a rather large common gathering place for everyone, including women. During feasts and festivals, history indicates that balconies were built to accommodate the larger crowds.
Many times with the large crowds the celebration would last late into the evening and on the final day they would stay up all night long. According to Jewish history, there would have been four giant lamps in the four corners of the court. The lamps measured 50 cubits (about 75ft) high and each lamp had four cups attached to it.
Each cup contained about 2 gallons of oil and a wick made from worn out belts and robes of the priests. Every night these lamps were maintained by a young priest in training who would climb to the top and and refill and light the cups nightly. It is said that the lamps produced enough light that a woman could sift wheat and all of the courtyards in Jerusalem were illuminated by their light.
It is in this setting on the final night of this feast of ingathering that Jesus proclaims that He is the light of the world.
