In the Beginning

The creation of time
Time is tied to matter
God is above time

God Created

Elohim - plural
Created - singular
The word here is used only for things God creates.
Ex nihilo

The Heavens and the Earth

A merism - two opposites are combined into an all-encompassing single concept.

And the Earth

This demonstrates that verse 1 is not simply a title, or summary statement.
The earth was empty and without the organization it would have at the end of the Creation Week.
The earth was made of water.
Darkness was over the face of the deep.

The Spirit of God

Again, we see aspects of the Trinity.
The peaceful presence of the Holy Spirit counters pagan cosmologies.
The presence of the Holy Spirit demonstrates Lordship.

God Said . . .

The Bible emphasizes that God created the universe simply by speaking it into existence.
Psalm 33:6 “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.”
Psalm 33:9 “For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm.”

Let There be Light

Instant fulfillment of God’s command.
God’s first words are tied to truth.
What is this light?

The Light was Good

An emphasis throughout creation is that God’s creation is good.

God Separated

We see the creation of day and night.
Darkness is an absence of light.

God Called

God naming creation demonstrates He has authority over creation.

Evening and Morning

This phrase, used throughout creation, adds weight to a literal six-day creation.

Day One

This is an unusual construction. It points to God demonstrating what a day is.

Practical Thoughts

God gives structure and order to our lives, not chaos.
Everything God gives is good.
In creation, instant obedience is modeled.
