Culture has become the antithesis of everything godly!
Basic rule of thumb - if it comes from this society, it will be against God.
Not a new problem as Jesus dealt with it. He said the physical world is opposite of the spiritual world and would use the opposites of light and darkness, first and last etc to prove his point.
Counter Cultural Tip #1: DON’T BE OFFENDED!
Mat 11:6 and Luke 7:23 says the blessed are the unoffended.
Mat 18:7 says offence MUST come!
Offense is a choice!
If you find yourself offended, then there is a problem with your relationship with God!
Application: Eph 4:27
Ephesians 4:27 ESV
and give no opportunity to the devil.
Don’t let the devil rent space in your mind!
Exodus 1:5–14 KJV 1900
And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already. And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation. And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them. Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph. And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we: Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land. Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses. But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel. And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour: And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.
Title: Lest they multiply
Tell the story:
70 souls goes into Egypt
Joseph dies, his brothers die and all that generation (430 yrs)
New pharaoh - didn’t know know Joseph (the ways of Israel)
Israel looked different, acted different, thought different, didn’t go to the same places or celebrate the same things
Feared what he did not understand
His excuse - they may join the enemy - they will become our enemy
You don’t want the people of God as your enemy!
What we don’t understand is we are already great and mighty!
What the fight is all about keeping us ignorant of our ability to affect the world around us!
Taskmasters (chiefs, leaders, men of influence - we would call them politicians today) to burden
Build his treasure cities
Be careful what you are building!
Matthew 6:19–21 KJV 1900
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Taskmasters to afflict
Afflict: be bowed down, thwart, frustrate, do violence to, forced submission, oppress, humble, to put down or be brought low
BUT the more burdens, more afflictions = more they multiplied and grew
They became grieved at Israel - made them serve with rigour (harsh and severe) - made them hate their lives
One of the greatest tricks of the enemy is to get you to hate your life in Him
If you are doing it right, the world system and many of those in its system will hate you
When that did not work, kill their future
This is the goal of the system of the antichrist
Conclusion:
1 John 4:4 KJV 1900
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
This society may afflict us, burden us and try to steal our future away - but it will not succeed!
Because greater is he that is in us!
Don’t worry about the affliction and burdens… that what the enemy does!
Hebrews 11:25 KJV 1900
Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
