Genesis 38: 1-30
So the marriage laws in the old days were a little weird. If you were a male that had married a lady, and you died without providing children, and you had a brother, then it was the brother’s duty to take your widowed wife as a spouse and give her children. The first son would be considered your child, but all of the rest of the children would be your brothers. This way if a man died without an heir his life’s work could be passed down to a son who could carry it on.
So Er took a wife, Tamar, and then he did something that God deemed so evil that God killed the man. IDK what it was, but it must have been bad. Tamar had no children, so it fell on Onan’s shoulders, but Onan knew that the child would not be his buy the law so he pulled out and spilled his seed on the ground. This angered the Lord and God killed Onan. (If you are obligating duties, you better do them) Now Judah lost two of his three sons to this woman, and he was afraid to lose the third. He told her to hang around and wait on the young boy to grow up, but Judah never intended on giving the boy over. So when Shelah was of age for marriage and procreation, and was not given to Tamar, she became wise to the situation and took matters into her own hands.
Judah’s wife died, and when he had grieved and recovered he went with his buddy Hirah to Timnah to the sheep shearers. Apparently this time was a party for the people of the area. When Tamar heard of this she took off her widows garment, and covered herself with a veil and positioned herself on the way to appear as a prostitute. Judah thought just that and he said “Hey lady, let me do the thing with you.” She was a classy enough lady and said “Whatchu gonna give me?”
