SETTLING INTO TOMORROW

Joshua 23:6-16, 24:14,15

A.G. Moving into our house in Crouseville. Settling in quickly.

NtK. Once the Israelites had conquered the land, they had to settle into it. Once we start to receive the goodness of God's promises we need to settle into our relationship with Him. These are not temporary, stop-gap methods.

Pur. To encourage you to do the things that will enable you to remain in the land of promise.

Pre. 1. Learn to live the authority God has given you.

2. Build an altar in your heart that binds you to the Body of Christ.

3. Consecrate everything in and about your home and family to God.

Trans. God has made us more than conquerors.

I. Learning to live in the authority God has given us.

A. Completely destroy the enemy.

1. Joshua 10 - Enemy had been routed and fleeing. Joshua wanted to destroy them.

2. Many times we send the enemies of our life fleeing, but we don't remove their influence from our lives, leaving them to attack us again.

B. We have been given authority, through Christ over many things.

1. Joshua 10:16-25 - Authority over the enemy y

2. Ephesians 1:15-23 - "Great power for us who believe..."

3. Luke 10:19 - I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.

4. Genesis 3:15 - "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel."

II. Building an altar to bind us to the Body of Christ

A. Commitment to Worship

1. Joshua 22:22-27 - Worshipping the Lord in His sanctuary.

2. They committed themselves to worshipping God, in His house at the appointed time.

B. Why it is important to regularly attend church.

1. Is church just for worship?

a. I can worship just as well, if not better, where I am than in church.

b. It is not just worship that is done at church, but a whole lot more. Worship, exhortation, fellowship, admonition, teaching, studying, intercessory prayer, and public show of commitment.

2. Belonging to a church is a dying tradition.

a. evidence of a "throw-away" society.

b. Just membership is dead.

c. We are the body of Christ. We all need to be together to do our parts.

d. We are part of a family now. Would you leave a new-born outside? Would you deliberately ignore your privileges and responsibilities to your family?

e. To reap the benefits, we must have an active, ongoing relationship with the family.

f. A coal removed from the fire cools off.

III. Consecrating every thing in and about your home and family to God.

A. "As for me and my house".

1. Regardless of what the rest of Israelite did, Joshua made his commitment.

2. He challenged them, if serving God seemed undesirable to them, then choose another to serve, but make up your mind one way or another.

B. What about you and your house?

1. Are you willing to commit yourself to serve God, in spite of what the rest of the world is doing?

2. Does serving God ever seem undesirable to you? If it does, recount your relationship with Jesus. Then choose what would be better for you - serving God or not.

C. Your house.

1. What you are at home is what you really are.

a. the way you speak and act

b. what you read and listen to

c. how you entertain yourself

d. what you watch on TV

e. where and what you spend your time on
