Billboards

What is the purpose of a billboard?
Did you know your life as a Christian is a billboard of your faith, your belief?
Do you think as a Christian you are accountable for the kind of billboard you are?
Romans 14:12 NASB95
12 So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God.
Before we go any further, we did not finish our previous lesson so let me do some reminders from there and then will get to the section for today, Lord willing.
As a reminder:
Jews and Gentiles have access (Eph2:18; Heb10:19-25)
Access to the inexhaustible riches of His grace (Eph1:7, 2:4, 3:8)
Access to stand in your faith (1Cor15:1-3; Eph6:13)
Gospel delivered, gospel received, gospel in which you stand.
Gospel which is of first importance!
Gospel emphasized that Christ died for our sins!
So, stand in your faith, regardless of circumstances in the physical world or the spiritual battles, stand!
Access to walk in victory (1Cor15:56-58)
Victory over death, victory over sin
Victory through our Lord Jesus Christ
Oh, i have to give you one verse of this at least
1 Corinthians 15:58 NASB95
58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.
This is where we ended last week, well, really two weeks ago
(Transition) Access that brings us to extol, to boast, to share in the hope we have because of our justification!
Peace with God (v.1) takes care of our past
Access to God (v.2) takes care of our present
Hope of the glory (v.2) looks to the future
(Insert our glorious hope picture here)
Our glorious hope (Rom5:2;1Tim1:1; Col1:25-28)
Jesus Christ is our hope according to 1Tim1:1; but now turn with me briefly to Col1:25-28. We are not going to make it beyond verse two today, it was a nice thought with good intentions to get through (v.3) but it is not going to happen.
Col1:25-28 “25 Of this church I was made a minister according to the stewardship from God bestowed on me for your benefit, so that I might fully carry out the preaching of the word of God, 26 that is, the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to His saints, 27 to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28 We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ.”
Our glorious hope, our living hope (1Pt1:3-12)
Now turn to 1Pt1:3-12, let’s just read it, I will very briefly make a few comments on it, then we will pray.
1 Peter 1:3–4 NASB95
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,
1 Peter 1:5–6 NASB95
5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials,
1 Peter 1:7–8 NASB95
7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 8 and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,
1 Peter 1:9–10 NASB95
9 obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls. 10 As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries,
1 Peter 1:11–12 NASB95
11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.
(Insert our living hope picture here)
Our Living hope gives us an inheritances that is imperishable (v.4)
A living hope that reminds us that salvation comes through faith (v.5)
A living hope that we can hold onto even in times of distress (v.6)
A living hope that is evident, seen, and can be proved (v.7)
A living hope, a living faith that the prophets spoke of is here! (vv.10-12)
So, this morning here are the billboards we are looking at:
Billboard of the scripture (Rom5:3-6)
Billboard of suffering (Rom5:3)
Billboard of proven character (Rom5:4)
Billboard of hope (Rom5:5-6)

Billboard of the scripture

When we read we should observe, define, discuss so then we can see where, if there is application. So, let’s read together.
Romans 5:3–4 NASB95
3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope;
Romans 5:5–6 NASB95
5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. 6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
Oh, we are starting in the middle of a thought we better back up to keep in context
Romans 5:1–2 NASB95
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.
What observations do you make?
Any words you think should be defined?
Exult: (v) -feel or show triumphant elation or jubilation.
Tribulation (n) - a cause of great trouble or suffering.
Perseverance (n) -persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.
helpless (adj) - unable to defend oneself or to act without help.
What does Paul tell the church to exult in (v.3)?
Exult in “our” tribulations
What is the results of tribulations (vv.3-5)?
Perseverance, proven character, hope that does not disappoint
What great truth does Paul remind the church of (v.6)?
While we were helpless, still sinners, Christ died for the ungodly, the sinner!

Bulletin board of tribulation/suffering

What happens when we go through hard times? Do we exult Christ? Do we illustrate Jesus who justified us by faith?
We cannot avoid tribulation (Jn16:33)
Romans 5:3 NKJV
3 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance;
Now the words of Jesus
John 16:33 NASB95
33 “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
What does Jesus call for us to have, and why (Jn16:33)?
Peace, courage, because he has overcome the world.
Suffering might be a bitter tree, but it is not a barren tree. It will produce fruit.
(story) my injury, my divorce part of why I am who I am today with hope for tomorrow.
The word suffering in the Greek is (thilipsis) meaning pressure, oppression, affliction, and tribulation.
It is only the one who has put their faith and trust in God, who has been justified and made peace with God (v.1) that we are able to exult in our tribulations, in our suffering.
Tribulations/suffering brings about perseverance
Perseverance (Hupomone) which means patience,, endurance, steadfastness
Perseverance to stay true to the gospel, to stay true to your position in Christ.
Helen Keller said “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved.”
(Transition) this leads us to our next billboard:

Billboard of proven character

From the tree of suffering it produces the fruit of proven character, hum, what does that mean, proven character?
Character: (n) - the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.
In the Greek it is (Dokime), shows the quality of something being approved.
This is more than persevering in the tribulations of this life, but for the sake of the gospel too in which you were justified and made peace with God.
Character is proven by perseverance, consider (2Cor4:17; Rom8:18; 2The1:5)
2 Corinthians 4:17 NASB95
17 For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison,
What are the results of our momentary light affliction (2Cor4:17)?
rom8:18
Romans 8:18 NASB95
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.
This just backs up the other scripture and one more
2 Thessalonians 1:5 NASB95
5 This is a plain indication of God’s righteous judgment so that you will be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which indeed you are suffering.
YOU WILL BE CONSIDERED WORTHY OF THE KINGDOM!
(Transition) Now if that is something to cling to, it is, that is hope! Our next billboard

Billboard of hope

Hope, we all want hope, and if you are a justified Christian you have hope (1Tim1:1) and that hope has a name, Jesus Christ. Our billboard of hope should display Jesus Christ and the hope we have in Him.
Romans 5:5–6 GNB
5 This hope does not disappoint us, for God has poured out his love into our hearts by means of the Holy Spirit, who is God’s gift to us. 6 For when we were still helpless, Christ died for the wicked at the time that God chose.
I want to take a side journey right now into hope, so grab your outline for there are some blanks to fill out in this, then will return to hope that does not disappoint.
We are to have hope against hope (Rom4:18)
Romans 4:18 NASB95
18 In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations according to that which had been spoken, “So shall your descendants be.”
Speaking of Abraham! and you, because of your faith, because of your hope you are Abraham’s descendant!
We are to exult (celebrate) hope (Rom5:2)
Romans 5:2 NASB95
2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.
For we have been saved in hope, in what is not seen (Rom8:24)
Romans 8:24 NASB95
24 For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees?
Oh wait, there is much more, I want us to get a good picture of hope
For God is the God of hope that fills us (Rom15:13)
Romans 15:13 NASB95
13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Hope that is in the hope of His righteousness (Gal5:5)
Galatians 5:5 NASB95
5 For we through the Spirit, by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness.
And there is only One hope according to Eph4:4; Hope laid up for you in heaven (Col1:5)
Colossians 1:5 NASB95
5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven, of which you previously heard in the word of truth, the gospel
Firmly established hope in the gospel (Col1:23)
Colossians 1:23 NASB95
23 if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister.
Set your hope on living God (1Tim4:10) and hope in eternal life (Tit1:2)
Boast in your hope (Heb3:6); Realize the full assurance of your hope (Heb6:11) it is an anchor to your soul (Heb6:19)
Hebrews 3:6 NASB95
6 but Christ was faithful as a Son over His house—whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.
and be in full assurance
Hebrews 6:11 NASB95
11 And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end,
For it is an anchor
Hebrews 6:19 NASB95
19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil,
Hold firmly to the hope (Heb10:23); our living hope through the resurrection (1Pt1:3)
Hebrews 10:23 NASB95
23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful;
Cling to, hold fast to the confession of our hope. to our living hope made possible through the resurrection
1 Peter 1:3 NASB95
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
So, now back to our passage
Romans 5:4–5 GNB
4 endurance brings God’s approval, and his approval creates hope. 5 This hope does not disappoint us, for God has poured out his love into our hearts by means of the Holy Spirit, who is God’s gift to us.
Hope does not disappoint the one who is
Justified by faith (5:1)
Perseveres through proven character (5:4)
The one endures knowing they will get to share in the glory of God!
The glory of God that was poured out (5:5)
The billboard of hope is a tree of life may we remember to cling to our hope!
For Disappointment can lead to discouragement
Proverbs 13:12 NASB95
12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But desire fulfilled is a tree of life.
Discouragement can lead to unproven character
Unproven character to despair.
But to the believing, hope filled Christian, hope will not disappoint, why for God’s love has been poured out
Romans 5:5–6 NASB95
5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. 6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
At the right time, God sent Christ to die for us. God sent His Son with a passion and a purpose. May our lives be lived with a passion and a purpose!
(Insert Billboard of hope PowerPoint here)
What kind of billboard are we going to be? Do we need to make adjustments, changes? Are we willing to? God has equipped us to, so lets be a good billboard for Jesus
