Contrast In Belief

previous passages demonstrate what effectual belief looks like (Jarius and the women with the bleeding issue) Even belief that is sometimes lacking, but still is authentic (like like the disciples in the storm) this mornings passage contrasts belief with that with unbelief.

His teaching and miraculous works were treated as suspect.

Acts 17:5 (CSB)

5 But the Jews became jealous . . .

Jealousy is a feeling of resentment, bitterness, or hostility toward someone who has something that you don’t.

Notice the motivation for the Jews anger towards Paul in verse 5: Jealousy

Mark records similar motivation with Nazaren’s anger towards Jesus.

Jesus quotes a well known saying (extra-biblical)

**Familiarity breeds contempt**

These people knew Jesus while he grew up, they knew his family.

Instead of being humbled by Jesus’ and his teaching they were instead envious and jealous of him… who does “this Jesus” think he is.

Proverbs 3:34 (CSB)

34 He [LORD] mocks those who mock but gives grace to the humble.

James reminds his readers of the warning of Proverbs 3:34

Our Witness to those who know us well

Need to become familiar with the person and righteousness of Jesus; not our own.

Become familiar with the Gospel Message (Thy why, sin) (The who, Jesus)

Prayer Mark 9:29 “29 And he told them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer.””

Consistent Walk (The message of Jesus living through over time will far out weigh one conversation or pithy statement about thier need to accept Jesus)
