Revelation #20

The Beast from the Sea / The Antichrist - Part 2 and The Beast of the Earth / the False Prophet

Revelation 13:1-10

Last week we introduced the Antichrist the most infamous Character in the Tribulation Period

We said that he is the opposite or counterfeit to Christ.

If you want to recognize the spirit of Antichrist, KNOW CHRIST

We are introduced in this chapter to the "UNHOLY Trinity", the "Trinity of Evil" if you will.

Let's compare … in the Holy Trinity we have

God the Father - Ruler and Head of all things

God the Son - provider of promise, the essence of God, God in Flesh

God the Holy Spirit - Bears witness to the Son, calls us to worship and follow the Son, draws attention to the Son

The Trinity of Evil, the Unholy Trinity

The Dragon - Satan - The Father of Lies, the Head of all things evil

The Antichrist - Beast from the Sea - the essence of evil on earth, Satan in the flesh

The False Prophet - Beast from the Earth - bears witness to the Son, has 2 horns or authority but is like a lamb - peaceful in appearance - demonic in word - he draws attention to the Antichrist, causes all to worship him, is a witness … hence he has 2 heads

So …

Let's look again at the Description of the Beast of the Sea

READ 13:1-8

Description of the Beast of the Sea

Let's remember for a minute the prophesy of found in Daniel 2 and Daniel 7 about the coming Kingdoms

Daniel 2 -

Nebuchadnezzar had a dream of a statue with a

Head of Gold - Babylonian

Chest and Arms of Silver - Media / Persian

Belly and Thighs of Bronze - Grecian

Legs of Iron - Roman

Feet of Iron mixed with Clay with 10 toes - a different Roman Empire that would be destroyed FOREVER by the Rock NOT CUT WITH HUMAN HANDS

Then in Daniel 7 he saw FOUR BEASTS

Lion - Babylonian

Bear - Media / Persian

Leopard - Grecian

Beast - with 10 Horns and a Little horn growing from the midst and taking off 3  - Rome - and the Coming Rome -

NOW here

The Beast of the Sea - rising up out of the Mediterranean Region - possibly of Greco-Roman origin with Jewish heritage - comes this beast - yet he

… --

He IS a beast with 10 Horns (Authority) and 7 Heads - Blasphemous names, each rejecting or denouncing GOD --- here is the LAST beast of Daniel 7 the Feet of Daniel 2 but like the legs of iron …

RESEMBLED --- ALL of the previous World Ruling Beasts / Kingdoms of Daniel 7 and 2.

Notice the Order is REVERSED …

The swiftness and agility in conquest of the Grecian Alexander the Great

The ferocious strength and stability of the Persians

This beast would have the fierce power of the Babylonians

Daniel was near the LION of Babylon, looking FORWARD in prophesy and John had been transported to the time of the BEAST of the END and was looking BACKWARD in prophesy and seeing how the Beast of the Tribulation will resemble ALL that have come before him

The 7 Heads --- Revelation 17:10 says that they are 5 which WERE and 1 which IS and one which WILL BE … they are probably one of 2 things 1) 5 previous emperors of Rome, with Domitian as the one who IS at John's writing and another to come being the Antichrist OR … they are 5 Kingdoms … Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, and ROME which IS, and the Future ROME to come.

10 HORNS - = 10 toes of Daniel 2 and the 10 horns of Daniel 7.  Horn means authority.  In chapter 17 we will learn more of these, but they are 10 KINGS who will GIVE their authority and Power OVER to the Beast, the Antichrist in the tribulation (17:12-14)

"Death and Resurrection" - The Fatal Wound the Ultimate Deception

v3

YLT "as slain to death"

KJV "as it were wounded to death"

NIV "seemed to have a fatal wound"

NASB "as if it had been slain …"

Let's break down the words

"hos" /hoce/ - as, like, even as …

"shazo" /sfa-zo/ - slaughter, slay, put to death

"thanatos" /than-at-os/ - separation of body and soul by which life on earth is ended

"plege" /play-gay/ a blow, stripe, wound

"therapeuo" /ther-ap-yoo-o/ to serve, to heal, cure, restore

"seemed to have a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed"

This is Satan's greatest act of deception on the world through this beast … Either, he DIES and Satan incarnates his dead body to animate it and appear that it has resurrected OR his death is FAKED as is his resurrection.

The fact that it says he "seemed to have a fatal wound" would lead us to believe that the death is FAKED … but remember that in Revelation 5 it describes the Lamb of God, Jesus appears "as if he had been slain".  And we KNOW that JESUS REALLY DIED … not appeared to die.

Also in Revelation 17 it says about the Beast that he "was … is not … will be" and it says that he comes from the Abyss where he belongs.  SO … it would appear that either would be true and accurate but what is important is that BOTH are a counterfeit, resurrection, BOTH serve for the purpose of deception … and IF you tell the TRUTH for the PURPOSE of deceiving … it is STILL a lie.

So what happens with the Antichrist?

  A. WONDER

The World becomes Enthusiastic about him …

Eckthaumazo or thaumadzo /thou-mad-zo/  - wonder, marvel, admiration

This event of "resurrection" becomes the catalyst to catapult this emerging world leader who has been the darling of the world, promoted peace in the middle east, signed a treaty of protection for Israel; propelling him into WORLDWIDE status.  It sparks a REVIVAL and AWAKENING to a New Religion and Government worldwide to worship this Beast, this Monster, this Antichrist.  The sad thing is that this AWAKENING is like waking up to find yourself in a coffin, in a mausoleum.

They will worship the dragon and the beast

Satan will NOT, in my opinion be worshiped as himself.  He has had an identity crisis for ions and he WANTS to be GOD, he believes he is God, so he will seek to be worshipped NOT as SATAN, but AS God, and the Antichrist as his Son.

People will think that they are REALLY worshipping Creator God, Lord of Heaven, when in reality they will be worshipping the lord of Hades and his Son the Beast of the Sea.

The people will WONDER at him

He will RISE to Prominence on the world stage in every way a super leader, super figure, a super man

He will Rule in Peace at first

There will be a Resurrection - The purpose will be to imitate Christ's death and resurrection to gain the following and worship of the world.  My guess to how is that it will appear to be undeserved, senseless, and unjust, a blow, or direct attack, as was Christ's death, thus making him Martyr, lord, and king.

He will then RULE in Power

But not only the WONDER but

  B. Words -

Every great leader has tackled the world with great skills with words

He will be a great speaker and an audacious speaker

    1. a Mover of Men - his words will change the allegiances and alliances of the world - people will WANT to follow him and go wherever he says

    2. a Molder of Hearts - his peaceful beginning will win the world over to where people will love him and be willing to die for him

    3. one who Melts Will - it seems illogical when we read it now for people to follow this one … but EVEN with this warning read by MILLIONS … he will change the minds of the world, change their understandings even of these prophesies … until people believe this is the RIGHT thing to do … people will WANT him to have control

    4. one Melds Minds - people will follow him as with one mind, a universal consciousness that the New Age movement has longed for ages to achieve

Not just Wonder and not just with his Words of Blasphemy against God

But then comes

  C. War -

    1. Persecution of the Saints - Daniel 7:25 - he will oppress the saints and try to change the set times and laws - he will attack all things holy and that give reverence, honor, and obedience to Jehovah.  And to a degree he will WIN … he will conquer the saints

    2. Power over the Nations - he will be given authority (rev 17) and he will subdue anything resist him no matter where they are … from the most remote tribe to the congested city dweller, to the jet setting billionaire … he will conquer all things great and small

    3. Presentation of Himself as god --- there is only one purpose to destroying the saints and controlling the nations that HE might be worshipped and his Father Satan

The BEAST of the EARTH / The False Prophet

We will learn more about this 3rd person of the Evil Trinity Later but let's just get the important parts about him before we close tonight

He is the Anti-Spirit … as the Beast is the Anti-Christ and Satan is the Anti-God

Read vv11-18

  A. 5 Characteristics of the False Prophet - His Role and Purpose

    1. Out of the Earth - the Beast of the Sea / Antichrist - is from among the sea of nations or at least the sea of nations around the Med.  But this one is NOT mixed that way … perhaps that means he will be Jewish.  Perhaps he is an "apostate jew" or one who has secretly renounced his faith … yet he deceives Israel and leads them to the covenant with the Antichrist, appearing to be true in his faith in the first ½ and then revealing his apostasy and worship of the beast in the 2nd half

    2. two horns like a lamb - horns mean authority - but like a lamb his authority it peaceful, he is a religious leader … he will be a wolf in sheep's clothing Mt 7:15 … he will look like a sheep but God calls him a beast of the earth

    3. He Speaks like a Dragon --- or like THE Dragon --- he is a powerful speaker but his speech comes straight from Dragon, Satan, he will deceive, he will LIE, he will "tell the truth" in order to deceive … He will oppose CHRIST but call for an "ecumenical faith" in Rev 17

    4. He has the authority of the 1st beast - close relationship of subordination but representation of the Antichrist.  The Antichrist will elevate him to the world stage

    5. He causes the world to worship the Antichrist - main purpose and operation of power will be to point, drive, insight people to worship the Antichrist - he will be the High Priest of the New Religious System of the Antichrist - As the Holy Spirit doesn't seek his own but points to Christ - this False prophet will not seek his OWN recognition but that of the Antichrist

  B. Supernatural Powers

    1. every demonic religion is steeped in superstition - many have exhibited great powers

    2. NONE will have ever had the power of THIS one - he performed "great and miraculous signs" - as in Pharaoh's court and throughout history Satan will counterfeit miracles 2 Thes 2:9 - I believe that he will go the area of the 2 witnesses in the first ½ of the Trib and counter all of their signs and wonders … it will be a showdown like Elijah but this time this False Prophet will call down Fire like the prophets of Baal could not.

    3. God will allow Satan to show his power that all who come to God in Faith do so because they made a decision … as Joshua said … Choose between to things … If God then serve him, if Satan, serve him

    4. Will put up an image of the beast and cause it to have "breath … so that it could speak" … this word "breath" can also be translated wind - so this is counterfeit whether it is human ingenuity to trick them; i.e. technology; OR it is demon infused …

    5. those who will not worship will be killed Rev 20:4 - that will be through beheading ---

This SHOULD be the time when Israel WAKES UP --- perhaps remembering the words of Moses

Dt 13:1-4

If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a miraculous sign or wonder, ?2? and if the sign or wonder of which he has spoken takes place, and he says, "Let us follow other gods" (gods you have not known) "and let us worship them," ?3? you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The Lord your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul. ?4? It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him.

  C. The Mark of the Beast

We will NOT spend much time here because JOHN didn't spend much time here, because the SPIRIT didn't spend much time here

    1. what does it mean?  We don't know!! - We could guess but we would be wrong … but the people of that day will know it and understand it

    2. The fact that people have been able to make Nero, and the Latin System of the Church, The Pope himself, Hitler, Mussolini, and many others ADD UP to 666 shows the futility in trying to claim ONE of those is right.

    3. The righteous of that day will know and understand it

    4. What is it exactly?  No one can know it is a MARK and it is on hand or on head

    5. It's USE it easy to understand … without it they will NOT be able to buy and sell … you will be on your OWN … and shut out of the world economy

    6. Why?  666 --- unknown - but 6, remember is the number of man.  Man was created on the 6th day one short of the 7th day of rest, we work 6 days, a slave could only be sold for 6 years and released on the 7th, crops were planted for 6 years and rested on the 7th, we have 24 hours which is a multiple of 6, 12 months a multiple of 6 … but 6 is a number that comes up short of the number of God's perfection that is 7.

    7. Here is a Trinity of 6's - 6 ones - 6 Tens - 6 Hundreds

    8. Ultimately it is a number of defiance for the Beast

6 - I am god worship me

6 - I am provider come to me for your portion

6 - I am your only hope for Salvation and I will make a perfect world for you or you will receive death for NOT coming to me

    9. The Beast is a symbol of the ultimate man and his number is still ultimately SHORT of 7.  In Father Son and Spirit God is 7, 7, and 7 but the beast is still SHORT at 6, 6, and 6

All he can ever be will be short of 7

All we can ever be will be short of 7

    10.  the Beast HIMSELF is a 6, His Government is a 6, his Religion/Law is a 6

    11. Criswell says "always a deafening, defeating, discouraging 6" he goes on to say "the height of man's arrogance, the height of man's folly, the ultimate of man's self will is STILL one short, a six, a six, and another six"

And the chapter ends … but aren't you glad that the story doesn't end there?

Satan would like us to chase after the Beast … spend our time focusing on 666 when we must remember this is NOT the Revelation of the antichrist it is the revelation of Jesus Christ … but what we know about the antichrist is enough … he comes up SHORT …

Rom 3:23 says "All have sinned (are a 6) and fall short (6) of the glory of God (7)"

Isaiah 64:6 "… all our righteous acts are like filthy rags" (6)

Rom. 6:23 "The wages of our sin (6) is death …

BUT TURN THE PAGE … don't end the story there … because THOUGH we are always 6 in life, 6 in death, destined for 6 in eternity …

Rom 6:23 "… the free gift of God is (a 7) Eternal Life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (7 in our place)!!!!

Satan will be at HIS ULTIMATE in the Tribulation and all he offers is

6!

6!

6!

But Jesus IS the Perfect Lamb with 7 horns and 7 eyes which are the 7-fold Spirit of God

A better time is coming … we will Leave behind this world that WAS good but has been plunged into evil's imperfection

A new Day is coming, a New Age is coming

A New Heaven, a New earth, a New Body, a New Mind, why?  Because a New Way has been opened whereby we might enter in … Jesus the 7 of Perfection, Salvation, and Grace

He who has an Ear, let him Hear

Enter In

Look Up

Live!

Viewpoints vv1-4

Historicist - Historicists have put forward three principal possibilities for the interpretation of these two beasts.

One view, advocated by Victorinus, Grotius, Wette, Bede, and others, holds that both beasts represent Rome in its pagan days, the second beast being a picture of the pagan priesthood.

The second possibility, taken by Barnes, Cuninghame, and others, is that this first beast out of the sea is representative of pagan Rome, and the second beast out of the land is the revival of Roman paganism in the form of the papacy.

A third view sees both beasts as different aspects of papal Rome. The first beast is the papacy in its exercise of political power; the second is the same entity in its exercise of ecclesiastical power through its priesthood. This is the view of Vitringa, Bengel, Elliott, and others.

Preterists - The symbol of the sea (v. 1) is generally regarded as an emblem of the Gentile world, from which Daniel's four beasts arose (Daniel 7:1ff). So it is a Gentile power that is here represented by a beast

The merging of the two ideas-of an individual and an empire-is not inappropriate in the single symbol, however, as Chilton writes:

This Beast … is not just an institution, but a person; specifically, as we shall see, it is the Emperor Nero. This is because, particularly the way the Bible looks at things, the two could be considered as one. Rome was, to some extent, covenentally identified with its leader, as the human race was with Adam; the Empire was embodied and represented in the reigning Caesar (Nero). Thus St. John's prophecy can shift back and forth between them, or consider them both together, under the same designation.

Even if Nero is the head mortally wounded, it is not he who personally survives the wound, but the beast that survives the wounding of one of its heads. At the death of Nero, the Roman Empire was thrown into violent convulsions of civil war and anarchy, in which three emperors succeeded one another within a single year. Historians consider it astonishing that the empire stabilized and survived this period that might easily have spelled the end of the imperial rule. Thus the recovery of the empire under Vespasian was a marvel to all-the beast of the empire had survived the mortal wounding of one of its heads (Nero).

Futurist - In Daniel 7, the lion was Babylon; the bear, Medo-Persia; the leopard, Macedonia (Greece); and the ten-horned beast was Rome. The animal-like traits of the beast (v. 2) combine the components of all four of Daniel's beasts. This is observed by Scofield:

The three animals, leopard, bear and lion, are found in Dan. 7:4-6 as symbols of the empires which preceded Rome, and whose characteristics all entered into the qualities of the Roman empire; Macedonian swiftness of conquest, Persian tenacity of purpose and Babylonish voracity. This first beast of John is the same as the fourth beast of Daniel (Dan. 7:24).

Gaebelein writes:

This revived Roman empire is an amalgamation of parts of the previous world empires. The preceding ones are absorbed by the last, the Roman empire… The ten horns are the ten kingdoms which will exist in that empire.… The heads represent the seven forms of government which have characterized the empire in the past, the seventh becomes the eighth.

The world's admiration of the beast stems from his amazing recovery from a deadly wound (v. 3). This could refer to a rising from the dead, possibly after an assassination. This is a common view, expressed, for example, by Ryrie:

In 11:7 he was seen coming out of the abyss, and that coincides with his restoration to life here. He apparently actually dies, descends to the abyss and returns to life. The world understandably wonders after him.

Spiritual / Idealist - The preferred reading of the opening words of this chapter is, "And he stood," meaning the dragon, who calls forth assistance from land and sea in the form of two monstrous beasts. This first beast, arising out of the sea (v. 1), is intended to represent "an incarnation of politicosocial evil" (Morey), or any governmental system at any time that opposes the kingdom of God.

The beast's seven heads (v. 1) speak of the various manifestations of the beastly spirit in successive empires: Old Babylonia, Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome. Since the beast was seen to have recovered from the mortal wounding of one of his heads (v. 3) in John's day, it is probable that Rome is the head that recovered from this blow. The wound itself would be the death of Nero in a.d. 68, at which time Rome's career as persecutor seemed to have ended, but it was revived under Domitian. Even Rome's survival as an empire was threatened by the revolutions and political upheavals that immediately followed Nero's death. However, stability was regained when Vespasian came to power (a.d. 69-79),

Viewpoints 11-15

Historicist -

Regardless of their opinion about the identity of the first beast, however, the majority would seem to identify the second with papal Rome or the priesthood of the Roman Church. In the empire that sprang up under Charlemagne, through the influence of the papacy, there was a return of the Roman world to paganism, but in its christianized form. This was also the revived head that had formerly received a deadly wound. Or, to shift the imagery, in the new manifestation of the Roman persecuting spirit, as embodied in the papal system, we see the image (v. 14) of the first beast given life and breath (v. 15).

This beast is said to perform great signs (v. 13), in order to enforce the worship of the beast. There have been few movements, to this day, that have claimed more signs and miracles to their endorsement than has the Roman Catholic Church. A partial list of alleged miracles said to have occurred in relation to Catholicism could include the following: images have come down and lit their own candles (could this be called "making fire come down from heaven"- v. 13?); crucifixes have spoken; idols have sweat, turned their eyes, moved their hands, opened their mouths, healed sicknesses, raised the dead, mended broken bones (does this sound like giving breath to an image, so as to allow it to speak- v. 15?); the stigmata has appeared on hands and feet of persons; Mary has appeared to many, healed their sicknesses, etc. Many of these things are still being claimed in modern times.

Preterist - Preterist expositors have advanced at least three positions. The most frequently encountered view suggests that this beast is a symbol for "the cult of the emperor," that is, that organized force within the empire that sought to enforce the worship of the Caesars. The second beast's two horns like a lamb (v. 11) suggest a religious nature more that a political one.

The third view sees this beast as false prophets "wolves in sheep's clothing

The making of an image to the beast (v. 14), or an image of the beast (v. 15), the giving breath to the image, and the requirement that all men worship it are difficult features to correlate with any action known to have occurred in Israel in the first century. This need not be taken literally, however, and can simply refer to the Jews' general homage to Rome's authority,

Futurist -

It is generally held that this beast is a religious leader-or even a counterfeit messiah-in contrast to the largely political character of the first beast. It seems apparent that the second beast is to be identified with the "false prophet" in 16:13, 19:20, and 20:10

More common among futurist scholars is the opinion that this beast, like the first, is an individual.

Some believe that the 2nd beast NOT the first is the anti-christ an apostate Jew posing as the messiah

In addition to requiring the construction and veneration of the image, the false prophet proceeds to give breath to the image of the beast (v. 15) so that it is even given the ability to speak, which to Ryrie may

indicate a supernatural miracle (performed by the power of Satan) which actually gives life to the image. Or, the word [for "breath"] may be translated "wind" and indicate some magical sleight of hand which the second beast performs that gives the appearance of real life to this image. The speech and movements of this image could easily be manufactured.

Spiritual / idealist - The second beast supports the first, but is different in form and strategy. While the first beast is ferociouslooking and terrifying, the second seems harmless like a lamb (v.11). Its innocuous appearance is misleading, however, and like the false prophets of whom Jesus warned, its words like a dragon  - false religion is the servant of the secular power

He enforces worship of an image of the beast (v. 15) on pain of death. The most persistent anti-Christian religious and philosophical sentiments will be those that align themselves with nationalism and statism-all of which confer upon the state a godlike virtue. Dissenters are usually persecuted out of existence.

Viewpoint - vv 16-18

Historicist - It takes only a slight acquaintance with the literature on Revelation and eschatology to know two things: (1) that the characters of the Greek, Hebrew, and Latin languages also served instead of numerals to designate numeric values, and (2) that a great number of names throughout history have, by being reduced to their numerical values, been shown to equal the mysterious number 666 (v. 18). Many attempts have been made to solve the mystery of the meaning of the number of the beast. The earliest solution known to historians was that proposed by Irenaeus in the second century, who believed it to be the name Lateinos [Greek for "Latin"]. He wrote: "It seems to me very probable; for this is a name of the last of Daniel's four kingdoms; they being Latins that now reign."

The forbidding to buy or sell (v. 17) is explained by the fact that the popes have often forbidden commercial intercourse with heretics or Protestants. Barnes writes: "It has been common in Rome to prohibit, by express law, all traffic with heretics."

Many ideas about the names going with 666 have been offered … one of NOTE is

Andreas Helwig (1572-1643) explained the mystic number 666 by reference to the pope's official Latin title: Vicarius filii Dei (translated: "Vicar of the Son of God"). The Roman numeral value of this title (i.e., V= 5, I= 1, C= 100, L= 50, D= 500, all other letters = 0) totals exactly 666. This title reportedly was written upon the crown known as the "Triple Tiara" worn by the popes at their coronations. In the seventeenth century, it was expunged from the miter.

Preterist -

One of the major evidences for identifying the beast with Nero is this information about the number of his name (v. 17). John obviously did not expect his readers who had understanding (v. 18) to have any difficulty in identifying the beast, since they could simply calculate the meaning of this cryptogram. Here using English characters, the Hebrew form of "Caesar Nero" is Nrwn Osr (pronounced "Neron Kaiser"). The value of the seven Hebrew letters is 50, 200, 6, 50, 100, 60, and 200, respectively. The total is thus 666.

Futurist - Many see in this passage a prediction of a cashless, worldwide economy in which credit/debit numbers assigned to individuals around the world replace the use of actual currency. Modern innovations in the banking industry may be leading in this direction. Eventually this number will be placed on the body of its possessor, possibly as an implanted computer chip or a laser-tattoo, in order to eliminate the possibility of theft or credit card fraud. Ryrie offers the basis for this literal view: "The word 'mark' means an impress made by a stamp, like a brand used on slaves and animals."

Attempts have been made to identify the number 666 with the names of many persons of ancient or modern history. One popular opinion is that the Antichrist will be a reincarnation of Nero or Judas Iscariot. Many modern historical figures have been shown to have names that can, by ingenious calculations, be made to conform to this diabolical cipher. Ryrie, with good cause, observes: "So many identifications have been made of 666 with characters of history as to make them all unreliable coincidences."

More popular among modern expositors is the suggestion that the number six represents man, who falls short of the perfection that the number seven would represent. Among these is Gaebelein:

But what does the number 666 mean? If we were to state all the different views on this number and the different applications we would have to fill many pages and then we would not know what is right and wrong… The number 666 signifies man's day and man's defiance of God under Satan's power in its culmination.

Spiritual / Idealist - The proof of compliance with the anti-Christian system is the acceptance of a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads (v. 16). Interpreters such as Wilcock do not find it necessary to understand this mark as any more visible or literal than is the "seal" (7:3) or the "name" (14:1) on the foreheads of the Christians:

Those who do not participate in the world's activities and philosophies in any age can expect persecution and ostracism.

It is not necessary to assume by the language used that the literal name or a literal cipher must be intended. Each digit in the number 666 (v. 18) falls short of the symbolic number of perfection: 7. Since it is the number of a man (v. 18), 666 symbolizes man's imperfection.
