What is necessary?

Martha generously invited Jesus and his disciples into her home—and to her table.
Luke 10:38 NIV
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.
Martha became distracted, worried, and upset about all the things she had to do.
Luke 10:39–40 NIV
She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
Luke 8:14 NIV
The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.
Luke 10:41–42 NIV
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Jesus reminded Martha that only one thing was actually essential: being with him.

Eating with Jesus Today

Today we are bombarded with opportunities and expectations to do everything.
As Christians we focus on all the work of being a Christian and forget to spend time with Jesus.
As churches we focus on all the programming and forget to spend time with Jesus.
As Americans we focus on all the ways we have to be successful and forget to spend time with Jesus.
If we try to be and do everything, Jesus will get lost in the shuffle.
If Jesus is who he says he is, then knowing him is the only essential thing in your life.
Matthew 16:24–27 NIV
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.
Which portion will you put on your plate?
