How did the miracles of Jesus connect with His claim to deity? What are demons? What was the purpose of demon possession? Do we have demon possession today?

Jesus heals a demon-possessed man and restores him to his community. This is a hard story for many of us to hear. We'd rather not think about demons or impure spirits. We don't know what to do with people who are excluded by their family or society because of mental illness. We'd rather not come face-to-face with the powers that control us. But Jesus' name is powerful. Jesus crosses the sea of Galilee and confronts the powers of evil on their territory. And Jesus wins. Because he is powerful. That is scary for the people who witness Jesus' power. They'd rather send him away than see his power change everything about their lives. What about you? Come and listen! Be transformed by word and worship of Jesus Christ.

Four keys to a life that makes a difference for God: 1. The faith we must embrace (vs. 38-40). 2. The future we must face (vs. 41-42). 3. A fight we must win (vs. 43-45). 4. The family we must belong to (vs. 46-50).

1. Go to Jesus when you are desperate (vs. 21-22). 2. Go to Jesus with great determination (vs. 22-26). 3. Go to Jesus with humble devotion (vs. 25). 4. Go to Jesus with deep faith (vs. 26-28).

Here God gives us some important lessons... 1. About demonic spirits (vs. 1-10). 2. About our divine Savior (vs. 8-13). 3. About deceived sinners (vs. 14-17). 4. About the delivered saint (vs. 18-20).

Jesus wants to help us understand... 1. His Scripture (vs. 9-13). 2. The spiritual dimension of sickness (vs. 14-18). 3. The miraculous power of faith in God (vs. 17-21). 4. The suffering of our Savior (vs. 9-12, 22-23).

Look how easily Jesus does things. He lifts up Peter’s mother-in-law by the hand and she’s well, fevered no more. He says “Go” and demons go. It’s not some epic struggle. There isn’t dragged-out tension and drama as we wonder if Jesus or the demon will win. Christ doesn’t shout, “My power compels you”…
