Throughout history, humanity has made a habit of rebelling against the Lord. Even in our world today, it seems that no matter where we look, in any and every nation, God and his people are under attack in all manner of different ways. But God has no reason to fear those who would plot against him, for he has, since before the creation of the world, had an even greater plan in store. From the beginning, his plan has been to install Jesus as king of all creation. For those who would make plans against this king, this Psalm provides a fierce warning; but for those who take refuge in him, they can rest in the assurance that he will bless them for all eternity.

The respected author of the Gospel of Luke continues his documentation of the early life of the Master by documenting Christ’s family attending Jerusalem for the feast of Passover. We read about Christ speaking with the Torah scholars of His day at the Temple during one of many trips (at least three times a year) to Jerusalem. With context supplied by the First Century Jewish historian Josephus, we see the political context surround Christ’s baptism by John the Immerser. We also see at Christ’s baptism an anointing and affirmation confirmed by God, “This is My Son in whom I am well pleased.” When read in light of Psalm 2, Isaiah 40, 42 and 53, we see the fulfillment of the “Comforter” of Israel realized through the manifestation of Christ.

One could make a case that this thief, whom tradition names Dismas, needs to get his eyes checked. Maybe we could blame it on the crucifixion. After all, he’s nailed to a tree. He’s been hanging for a while. He may not be in his right mind. If he was, he wouldn’t seek help from the guy nailed next to…
