Exegetical Point: Homiletic Point: Abimilech leaves us hungering for a good King, who has a rightful claim to the throne, who uses might to protect people, who’s “shameful” death is actually a self-sacrificial deliverance of God’s people. David, then David’s descendant Jesus answer that longing. Intro…

In Judges 6-9 we read the account of Gideon. One of the most famous scenes from this account is Gideon's fleece as he sought reassurance from God. But is this really something we should be emulating, or is their something rotten underneath the cute story?
Join us as we explore the ancient Israelite judge, Gideon.

Some candles burn better than others. All else being equal, there are two primary factors that impact how a candle burns. The wax, and the wick. I learned this week the that best wax the world has to offer is poured beeswax. There are rolled beeswax candles, and they burn relatively quickly, but poured…

There is a children’s song that talks about a little red waggon. I don’t know if you’ve heard it. “You can’t ride my little red wagon The seat is broke and the axle’s draggin” These lyrics are usually followed by some chanting of some kind, and then this line: “Second verse, same as the first, a little…

The music band Skillet is a Christian Rock band, I used to listen to them a lot during my teen and college days. The lead singer of the band’s name is John Cooper, and he once said “I'm amazed that so many Christians want the benefits of the kingdom of God, but with the caveat that they themselves be…

Let’s walk though the overarching storyline of the book once again and remind ourselves where we’ve been. We noted at the beginning of our study that this is theologized history. The original human author had a point and purpose in mind as he wrote. It was written for a specific prophetic purpose. As…

Our text today contains a series of negotiations. In many ways, all of life is based on our ability to negotiate, though that may be less true than it once was. We expect our government to negotiate trade deals, peace treaties, etc. Local governments might negotiate with businesses, non-profits, etc.…

Intro Who’s going to lead God’s people? You may think of kings or leaders as a “necessary evil” like police. If there was no sin or evil in the world, we wouldn’t need police. However, remember that there was authority structures before the fall, and they were good. Even if there was no sin, we would…

When George Washington’s army defeated the British General Charles Cornwallis at Yorktown, the end of the Revolutionary War began. Winning the war didn’t automatically end the problems that the colonies faced. Things became so bad economically that one of George Washington’s colonels wrote Washington…

1 Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the troops who were with him, got up early and camped beside the spring of Harod. Life and literature are filled with the “Cinderella legend,” stories about rejected people who were eventually “discovered” and elevated to places of honor and authority. Horatio Alger wrote over 100 boys’ novels that focused on the “rags-to-riches” theme, and he became one of the most influential American…

Judges 9: The Power of Example
The life of Abimelech (Gideon's son) reminds us of the power of example. While Gideon loved the Lord, he made some bad decisions late in his life and did not finish well. Because of that, he left a poor example for his children to follow, and Abimelech did just that.
This chapter reminds us that those within our sphere of influence will be impacted by our actions – both good and bad. A father on the wrong road will lead his children in the wrong direction. As parents, what we do in moderation our children will take to extremes.
Be careful what you do and what you say! Eternity will hear the echoes of your life! The best sermon anyone can preach is a godly life. The best song ever sung is a consistent walk with God.

Killed by very people convinced to make him ruler: Abimelech, born of a Shechemite woman, convinced the citizens of Shechem to make him king and to kill his half-brothers, the seventy sons of Gideon. Only Jotham escaped the slaughter. From Mount Gerizim, which overlooks Shechem, he taunted them by telling…
