Faith Practices
Thomas VanderPloeg • Sermon • • 20 views • 36:42
As a faith practice, listening involves training ourselves to recognize Gods voice (John 10:1-6) in the midst of all the other voices calling for our attention. It involves learning to be fully present in the moment, setting aside distractions that keep us from attending to and responding to Gods presence around us.

Paying Attention to God How do we learn to listen to God? To know His voice? To get His direction? To see what He is doing and to join Him in whatever that is. We can’t create the wave, but we can ride it, if we learn to look for it. Today’s message combines a couple of goals I had upon returning. One…

WALKING SLOW Last week we started a new series that we are calling “The Way.” The name of the series comes from Jesus proclaiming “He is the way!” When we do things our way, they always seem to go bad. At the very least, they don’t go as well as we hoped they would. Sometimes we even find ourselves saying,…

It’s safe to say that our society deals with more distractions than any previous society in history. Most of us persistently feel pulled in different directions. I saw a bumper sticker once that said, “God loves you and everyone has a wonderful plan for your life.” I certainly feel that—, and it seems…

Introduction: God always has a chosen remnant that obeys Him and that He protects. There was a remnant in Genesis 6 as Noah and his family were delivered during the flood of the entire earth. In 1 Kings 19 Elijah was told by God that there was a remnant of 7,000 that had not bowed their knee to Baal.…

To do all things to the glory of God sounds a fairly easy doesn’t it? I am not fantastic at multitasking, so only having one thing to do is great. But it isn’t as simple as that is it? We face challenges from all sorts of places that make us doubt, make us turn away from God, that make us angry, or drive…

Introduction Last week we started Titus. Paul wrote this letter to Titus, who has been left on the Island of Crete. The New Testament repeatedly encourages us to 'pray continually' or to 'pray without ceasing'. But what does that actually mean? Does it mean praying three hour-long prayers every day? Does it mean one hundred one-minute prayers throughout the day? Does it mean praying non-stop while multitasking everything else in your day? Or does it mean a higher state of prayerful meditation in general? And if it's any of these, isn't it impossible to live up to? Doesn't it just make us feel bad, guilty and sub-par? Thankfully, we don't need to feel that way. Our prayer life is not about meeting a standard – it's about enjoying our walk with God. It's about communing with the One who has rescued us and who carries us. It's about revelling in prayer – together.

Today we live in a very fast paced society, a rat race. It's a feeling often of being driven to the wall with activity--running behind and not being able to get it done. We can't even think about getting ahead. There's not enough time in the day, and if we do get time, we’re so tired and worn out that…
