It is the two contrasts Paul writes of in Romans 7:6 – old as opposed to new, Spirit as opposed to letter, that help us understand that Paul is talking in terms of the new covenant, and the implications are astounding!

We now turn to the central point of Romans 7, the reason why we can't save ourselves, or make ourselves acceptable to God, is that we are in the flesh.

Even our marriage to the Lord Jesus Christ is not the end goal in itself; it, too, has a purpose - that we might bearn fruit for God. Our understanding of the gospel is woefully incomplete if we don't understand its purpose!

The marriage of the church to Jesus Christ is a real and complete marriage as the bride to Christ the bridegroom. And so, all of the many benefits of marriage for the wife, are ours in this real and true marriage to Christ Jesus!

Not only have we died to sin, but we who are in Christ Jesus have also died to law, and all of this happened to us for a distinct and particular purpose!

As we turn to consider the place of the law in the life of the believer, it is absolutely vital that we look at Romans 7 within its context of the larger argument that stretches from Romans 5 all the way through to the end of Romans 8.
