There are just as many readings of the Law in Nehemiah as there are in the rest of the OT combined. Scripture is for all ages , the whole community. This was commanded many of times in the OT, parents were to teach their children what the faith looked like and the reasons behind the rituals. We must…

Questions we ask: What do I do when people attack me? What is really going on with _______________? How will the church continue in the midst of our culture? The big idea: discernment is needed now to understand our future. Nehemiah had the ability, I believe it was God given, to see things underneath…

From that day on, half of my servants worked on construction, and half held the spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail. And the leaders stood behind the whole house of Judah, who were building on the wall. Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that each labored on the work with one hand…

Now when Sanballat and Tobiah and Geshem the Arab and the rest of our enemies heard that I had built the wall and that there was no breach left in it (although up to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates), Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come and let us meet together at Hakkephirim…

The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah. Now it happened in the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Susa the citadel, that Hanani, one of my brothers, came with certain men from Judah. And I asked them concerning the Jews who escaped, who had survived the exile, and concerning Jerusalem.…

Introduction & Review REVIEW: At the end of Nehemiah chapter 4, things have gone very well for the Jews. Nehemiah has pointed the people back to the LORD every time they’ve been discouraged by the mockery and schemes and threats of their enemies. When Sanballat’s alliance fails, even the gloomiest folks…

God’s people dedicate the rebuilt walls of Jerusalem to the Lord with a joyful celebration; however, the conclusion of Nehemiah is somewhat anticlimactic. As we seek to be agents of change and to build the kingdom of God on this earth, struggles and setbacks will occur, even after great victories. This is why we trust in the work of God’s Spirit in us and eagerly anticipate the return of Jesus and the eternal establishment of his kingdom.

Even though Nehemiah has the king’s blessing and the people are eager to rebuild the walls, opposition from others seeks to dishearten the people from accomplishing the work of God. As followers of Jesus, we will encounter opposition from spiritual forces that scheme against us. We can overcome our adversaries by praying, being watchful, guarding the places where we are most vulnerable, and fighting for one another.

Nehemiah 5:6–12 (ESV) I was very angry when I heard their outcry and these words. I took counsel with myself, and I brought charges against the nobles and the officials. I said to them, “You are exacting interest, each from his brother.” And I held a great assembly against them and said to them, “We,…

Not only does Nehemiah face opposition from the outside, He also discovers opposition from inside his own people. While common people are looking to survive, Nehemiah confronts community leaders looking to take advantage. Nehemiah knew that taking care of ‘family business’ was as important as being prepared for threats from the outside. We cannot neglect the inward heart-work necessary to the restoration of our own souls and community.

For more than 140 years the walls had remained only as a broken and burned rubble. Nehemiah takes a systematic approach to rebuilding the walls. He starts at the most vulnerable places and works his way around until the walls and the gates are in place and set. In the same way that God restores the land, the walls and the temple, He desires to restore to wholeness our body, soul and spirit. So how do we build the right walls with the right gates?

With the walls of Jerusalem completed, the Book of the Law becomes the central focus of the story; it brings about a spiritual renewal among the Israelites. We experience spiritual renewal by living in the joy and delight of God, knowing our identity as God’s people, and repenting of our sins.

Upon receiving a bad report about the conditions of those who had returned to Judah and the city of Jerusalem, Nehemiah is overcome with grief and seeks God. His heart is broken for his people and so he does the best and only thing he can do, he prays. As we encounter trials, affliction, or evil, we must respond by entering into seasons of prayer, and confession, as well as recalling the character and promises of God. This is the best way to rebuild a broken faith is in prayer, confession and hope in Jesus.
