Why should I fear in times of trouble, when the iniquity of those who cheat me surrounds me, those who trust in their wealth and boast of the abundance of their riches? Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life, for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice, that he should live on forever and never see the pit.

Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. And he had to pass through Samaria. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.” Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.” The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”

And he had to pass through Samaria. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.

A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.)
A Samaritan Woman arrives

To be accepted by someone
Do that person a favour
Give that person an opportunity to fo you a favour (more effective)
Jesus does both
The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
Israel had been destroyed by Assyria in 722 BC
Most had been taken captive but the very poor were allowed to remain
They intermarried with with foreigners from Babylon and the surrounding areas
Adulterated Judaism was grafted on the pagan cult
When the Jews returned from exile in Babylon the Samaritans refused to help with the rebuild, and even interrupted it
Built their own temple on Mount Gerizim
Jews have no dealings with samaritans (not share utencils, or equipment)
Woman: “how is it that you, a Jew ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria”
Highlights Jesus’ need and her ability to provide
Jesus: “If you the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘give me a drink’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water”
Jesus highlights her need and his ability to provide
The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.”
Her response is literal
2 problems: He has not bucket & the well is deep
Surely you are not greater than Jacob
She begins to ponder what Jesus is saying
Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again
Whoever drinks of the water Jesus gives will never be thirsty again
“The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life”
The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”
She continues to consider her immediate need
Does not recognise her spiritual need
Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
Jesus begins tohighlight her Spirirtual Need
The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”
Jesus’ question hits a nerve
He is abrupt and short in her reply
Her lifestyle was unpopular with samaritans
She wasn’t going to reveal it to this Jew
Jesus’ reveals his personal knowledge of her life
The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.”
I perceive that you are a prophet
She deflects to the problem between Samaritans and Jews
Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.
Jesus does not dismiss her question
You worship - rejected the propetical and poetical books of the old testament
We worship - God has revealed the entire old testament
He starts by pointing out where they agree
The promise of Salvation proceeds from the Jews
But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Jesus affirms the promise
that the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth
God is seeking such people to worship Him
He now affirms it is now coming to pass
Truth - clear and definite knowledge of God
Spirit - circumcision of the heart (soul - transcendent - logic and knowledge)
“God is spirit and those who worship him must worship in spirirt and truth”
The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, he will tell us all things.”
She realises Jesus speaks of the work of the Messiah, The Saviour
Knows her salvation can only be through the Messiah
Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am he.”
Jesus affirms for her “I am”
I (ego) who speaks to you AM (eimi)
