Luke 8:40-48

Jesus Is The Last Hope of the Desperately Hopeless

'When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. Just then, a man named Jairus came. He was a leader of the synagogue. He fell down at Jesus’s feet and pleaded with him to come to his house, because he had an only daughter about twelve years old, and she was dying. While he was going, the crowds were nearly crushing him.

A woman suffering from bleeding for twelve years, who had spent all she had on doctors and yet could not be healed by any, approached from behind and touched the end of his robe. Instantly her bleeding stopped. “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds are hemming you in and pressing against you.”

“Someone did touch me,” said Jesus. “I know that power has gone out from me.” When the woman saw that she was discovered, she came trembling and fell down before him. In the presence of all the people, she declared the reason she had touched him and how she was instantly healed. “Daughter,” he said to her, “your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

Luke 8:40-42

Twelve Years of Joy are Coming to a Heartbreaking End

'When Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him.

The people in Galilee had been desperately waiting for Jesus to ________________ from the other side of the sea.

Just then, a man named Jairus came. He was a leader of the synagogue.

A powerful member of the Jewish community had come as well, the local ___________________ of the synagogue.

He fell down at Jesus’s feet and pleaded with him to come to his house, because he had an only daughter about twelve years old, and she was dying.

He did a surprising thing: he humbled himself and threw himself on the mercy of Jesus, __________________ him to come to his house.

He did this not to show off his authority and hold a grand party for Jesus, but because he had a twelve year old daughter whom he loved dearly, and she was about to ________________.

While he was going, the crowds were nearly crushing him.

Jesus agreed to go without question, and he left for the man's home there was a great ___________________ of people coming along with them.

Luke 8:42-44

Twelve Years of Misery have No End in Sight

A woman suffering from bleeding for twelve years, who had spent all she had on doctors and yet could not be healed by any

As Jesus walked to the man’s house, there was one woman in the crowd who had come to Jesus because of a hopeless and desperate condition.

She had an uncontrollable hemorrhage that had been going on for __________________ years. She has spent all her money on doctors but they were not able to help her, so she was now desperate for a cure.

In this condition she was permanently ritually unclean and would be an outcast just like a leper and anyone who came into contact with her would be unclean as well.

(She) approached from behind and touched the end of his robe.

Despite her hopeless condition and the fact that she was breaking all social norms being in this crowd, she took advantage of the press of the crowd, to silently _______________________ the bottom of his robe.

Luke 8:44-48

A Life is Changed in an Instant

Instantly her bleeding stopped.

Beyond hope, she was ____________________________ healed and she knew she was freed from her bondage of sickness and shame.

“Who touched me?” Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds are hemming you in and pressing against you.”

Jesus knew what had happened, and instead of allowing the woman to leave with her miracle healing silently, he asked a strange question, “who _________________________ me?”

His disciples were confused and responded that the crowds were so great and so close that many people were touching him,.

“Someone did touch me,” said Jesus. “I know that power has gone out from me.”

Despite the fact that the women had merely brushed up against the hem of his cloak, Jesus knew what the woman had done and that she had been healed.

When the woman saw that she was discovered, she came trembling and fell down before him.

The woman knew that her sin in touching this great teacher had been discovered and feared his retribution.

She came and fell down before him _________________________ in fear for what he might do to her for her presumption.

In the presence of all the people, she declared the reason she had touched him and how she was instantly healed.

Despite the terrible shame her confession would bring and his likely rebuke, she testified to he what she had done and why and proclaimed to all that the just touching Jesus’ cloak had ____________________ her.

“Daughter,” he said to her, “your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

Rather than rebuke her, Jesus lovingly assured her that her great __________________ in him was the reason for her healing.

And rather than condemn her, he blessed her and called her to go live in the newfound ________________________ she was given.

Truth 1 Jairus was a man with power and prestige, but he humbled himself before Jesus for the sake of his great love for his dying daughter.

In the midst of our success, God sometimes allows sorrow and tragedy to wake us up to our need for Him. When trials shake up our world, will we respond as this man did with humility, and beg Jesus for help?

Truth 2 The woman who had lost everything and lived in misery for twelve years, had one last hope, that Jesus might show her mercy and do what no one else could.

When all else fails, do we turn to Jesus as this woman did, hoping beyond hope that he can do what no one else could?

Truth 3 The woman’s faith in Jesus delivered her from her social and medical hopelessness, but her faith in God’s power to heal her through Jesus also restored her relationship to Him.

Far more important than physical healing or social acceptance, the greatest need we have is to have a restored relationship with God our creator. Jesus came to seek and save the Lost.
